Ohio Health and OSU

U.S.A. Ohio

So I keep seeing all the great things happening in Columbus and it has really got me thinking about moving down there after school. I know Columbus, like Cleveland, has a lot of nursing schools so finding a new grad job wont be easy.

Anywho, does anyone know any real good hospitals to work for down there? I know there is OSU, OhioHealth, and Mt Carmel.

Any input from current or former employees would be great! New grad nurse pay starts from $25-$26/hr here, not sure of shift differentials.

Thanks!

I work for Ohio Health. I love it there. I left OSU to go there. I paid $36 a month to park at OSU. That was a lot close to the hospital but don't expect to have an easy time parking at the lot on home football game days. Union dues were $54 a month. Ohio health has comparable salary, free parking.

Sounds like OhioHealth is the place to be.....

I would likely pick an OhioHealth job over OSU but if OSU is the only place you get an offer, I'd take it in a heartbeat. You can't go wrong with either system.

How are medical benefits at OhioHealth?

I don't have them. I think the health is Cigna. The have VSP for vision and delta dental. I do have the dental for my daughters impending braces though. Lol

I see. I only ask because I work for a great hospital up here in Cleveland but the medical benefits could be better. I'm only 28 but I keep hearing older adults speak about what they pay for some of their insurance and I want to make sure I dont go down a similar path haha.

I'll find out for you. Most of my extended family works there.

That would be great, thanks!

Can't say much about OSU since my RN friends working at the OSUMC were OSU grads, and we all know how they can be. Obviously the most research and funding than any other Columbus hospital, but mandation and other union benefits end up playing a role. Also I have heard that their new grad RN are only receiving 1/2 pay during orientation. Maybe someone here can dispell/confirm this rumor?

The only thing I can think of that OSU has a rep for in terms of OSU BSN students is the OSU hires OSU grads. Can you elaborate on what you mean by "we all know how they can be?" Working in Columbus, I have not had any poor experience with any OSU grads other than the graduate entry NP students.

Ha, yes. Grad entry students. They're always a wee bit scary and generally not very nice. But I think traditional OSU grads are great. They have a great program over there. And yes, OSU will typically hire their own PCAs (when they graduate) and OSU grads first. But I have no complaints about a hospital looking after their own. Mount Carmel hires a lot of their own grads too.

Can you elaborate on how OSUs Grad Entry students are 'scary' - is it unsafe scary or mean teacher scary? Maybe the current cohorts (one is finishing pre-licensure and the other has just begun clinicals) are better than previous ones?

I totally get OSU hiring OSU grads since they probably already have the inside track to getting a job. An OSU grad was hired on my floor up here and said they are hiring at The James but anywhere else is tough because they just dropped a billion on the new hospital, dunno how true that is but it makes sense.
