Ohio Health and OSU

Published

So I keep seeing all the great things happening in Columbus and it has really got me thinking about moving down there after school. I know Columbus, like Cleveland, has a lot of nursing schools so finding a new grad job wont be easy.

Anywho, does anyone know any real good hospitals to work for down there? I know there is OSU, OhioHealth, and Mt Carmel.

Any input from current or former employees would be great! New grad nurse pay starts from $25-$26/hr here, not sure of shift differentials.

Thanks!

When I was hired at Mount Carmel as a new grad I was making $24 with a $5.50 night shift differential and $1.50 weekends. As the previous poster said, I enjoyed my time at Mount Carmel although it tends to get a bad rap. I worked for the more favorable hospital within the MCHS, but was always satisfied with the respect I got from higher-ups. Mt Carmel tends to hire ADNs more than OSU or Ohio Health (a large reason MC isnt Magnet status), and some of my coworkers showed me they weren't prepared for a hospital nursing job right out of COTC, but the organization does promote a good nursing model and care centered thinking. (or whatever this year's buzzwords are)

I hear nothing but bad about Ohio Health (esp Riverside) from my patients. They have some state-of-the-art facilities but also some highly outdated facilities and equipment. The vibe was... off... when I interviewed with OhioHealth. I'm a pretty easy guy to get a long with, but every employee I encountered seemed rude. Keep in mind these are two biased opinions, so take them for what its worth.

Can't say much about OSU since my RN friends working at the OSUMC were OSU grads, and we all know how they can be. Obviously the most research and funding than any other Columbus hospital, but mandation and other union benefits end up playing a role. Also I have heard that their new grad RN are only receiving 1/2 pay during orientation. Maybe someone here can dispell/confirm this rumor?

I would not have done my 12 week orientation for half of what I make now.

I see. I really like Columbus but I look at the hospitals here and the ones there and it doesn't make sense to go from here to there, at least as a new grad.

Im actually going to be visiting Columbus this weekend. My buddy's gf works at Mt Carmel, ill pick her brain.

I know Cleveland Clinic pays 3/4 during orientation and then goes to 100% once you are done. They dis this because too many people were leaving right after orientation.

I was wondering what the heck was up with that 18/hr!

I'd recommend working for a year or even 6 months where you are now so your resume will get to HR. there's just too many darn nursing schools and not enough jobs.

This is true. Some of my fellow students have plans of moving out of state and I dont think they realize how saturated the market is in other states unless they are willing to work in rural areas of those states.

I agree with what you said. Plus I can live almost for free up here while I pay off as much of my loans as I can. Then the move to Columbus would be that much easier.

What is considered the more favorable hospital within MCHS?

I think it's all relative.

I like the ICU, does East have ICUs (Dumb question I know)? My buddy's gf works in the ER at East and it def makes me not want to do ER haha. How do you like the benefits?

Yeah multiple ones! MICU, SICU, neuroICU, CCU, and a CPCU. However, there no trauma center, so if you're interested in trauma patients/certifications there's none to be had at east. I think St Anns is split up similarly.

St Anns is becoming the go to within MCHS for open heart so if you're into cardiac ICU patients that's the place to be.

Benefits are fine, comparable to other hospitals. Parking is easily accessible and free.

See I love cardiac and I think thats where I want to work, especially an ICU. Having the Cleveland Clinic here though makes it hard to leave. Ive kinda thought about trauma. Ive also thought OR haha. I guess all I can do is apply and see what happens.

I was able to find OSU salaries in the union contract online.

Is it true their nurses have the highest salaries?

Does anyone know the shift differentials at Ohio Health or Mt Carmel?

Does anyone know how much parking is for employees at OSU?

Thanks for any help.

I guess osu nurses make 36 an hour while mount carmel starts at 24. The 36 an hour nurse I know does critical care

There's no way a new grad is starting at 36, you must have gotten your info from an experienced RN. most new grad start out around $24, with maybe a $1-$2 difference based on the system. Unless she's including shift diff--
