people say that everybody in medicine has got something, something that totally grosses them out.
this tissue, organ, bodily function is avoided at all costs or you'll :barf01:.
i haven't come acrossed mine yet... (i'm a little scared of what it'll be, i know its lurking out there somewhere).
what's yours?
One time we had a GI bleeder with c.diff.... enough said :barf01:
The only thing that has ever made me light headed was watching a bone marrow biopsy on a pt that we couldn't sedate due to resp status.... the combo of the sounds just about made me hit the floor, then I look over and one of the other nurses was white as a ghost and looking away too. I think its strange how that bothers me, but I think watching them drill into the brain is really cool!
Have to agree with honestrn, gangrene is THE WORST!! and the smell doesn't come off your hands for days if you even touch the skin around the wound!! (made this mistake years ago when working at a nursing home and the owner was too cheap to provide gloves - and I didn't know any better).
the smell of a vac dsg change made me ill one time. There was an open area where part of the bowel was poking through and a huge clot right over it. It smelled like rotting meat! when I was a cna there was a pt that puked all over herself and pooped diarrhea liquid up to her belly at the same time....it was awful to clean up. just don't breath too much!
Urine doesn't bother me, neither does poop (too much). I think abscesses are cool. Love blood and guts. Vomit doesn't bother me unless I see/hear the person vomit. When my kids pukes, and I am holding them, I have to turn away and try to block it out or I will vomit too (can't even stand to hear fake retching on tv, like a previous poster said). But what really gets me is mucous, and snot. I can't even watch another person blow their nose, and will only blow my nose in privacy too out of respect, just because I think it is so awful and gross.
Oh, and I don't really like teeth stuff either.....could never be a dental hygeniest.
That's the WEIRD part! They aren't really even that gross.............it must be the harpoon that they use...It doesn't make me want to puke, it makes me want to pass out!
I agree with that...not gross, but I think I would pass out as well. When I had my kids, I refused the epidural for that simple fact. I was more scared of that needle than the pain.
Gangrene comes to a close second for grossness. The smell tends to linger well after the patient is gone. I love doing wound care but when necrotic toes start chipping off I get a little woozy. I quickly get over it. Sputum, again, is a different story.

Yep!! Mucous and snot. Nothing else really phases me but those two. I'm like you. Don't want to watch someone blow their nose and I always go blow mine in private.

I'm barely able to type this without an obligatory spinal arch and bilateral shoulder rise with my head turned to the side, face all screwed up and arms up and hands out.

cANNOt do eyeballs. (Repeat of above............)
Found this out the hard way when I was a student nurse on my surgical rotation. Got stuck in the eye surgeons surgical suite because he allowed no entrance nor exit during HIS surgery.
One of the nurses had to break sterile field to literally peel me off the wall of the OR suite.
THAT is the pinnacle of the worst experience I've ever had in nursing. Everything else has been cake walk for about 20 years now.
