One of the great perks (or curses?) of PDN work is going along for the ride, everywhere! Last week, I was a "rent-a-nurse" for an intermediate unit that was going on a field trip to a local AAA baseball game. It was a lot of fun and I got a free hot dog meal! A few years ago I went on a field trip to a local greenhouse at Halloween. Since I'm mostly an overnight nurse, I don't go too many places, but these rare day jobs can be great.
My friend also does PDN does adult care, and last week she tagged herself on Facebook in the middle of the night at the local casino, helping her client play blackjack! (Yes, yes, HIPAA, she didn't name names, and she won't see your lecture here anyway.)
But the best trip wasn't even on the clock. Last month, a former client invited me and my daughters down to visit her at her college in Washington, DC. She was interning at a satellite radio station for kids, and they were invited to attend a concert recording of a famous kids recording artist whom they love. They both sat right at his feet!!! It was a dream come true for them, and the entire trip was a blast for everybody. This doesn't count as a work trip but it never would have happened if it wasn't for my career as a PDN. You never know where nursing can take you!
So... where have YOU been???
Ive been doing this PDN for q while ( prior to being an rn I did pdn as a companion/med tech) I've done and seen a lot :-) one thing I love about pdn is the teaching opportunities when your out in public. I love explaining how my pts are just like regular ppl. And that if you want something bad enough no one can stop you. Down side to traveling, carrying everything. I separated my left shoulder last year on an outing and didnt report it. It still hurts badly :-(
I've been shopping and out to dinner a few times but my favorite was to one of my adult client's place of worship. I couldn't go past the lobby but the grounds were beautiful and I enjoyed the people I talked to. We had a lot of fun on these jaunts. It's always a little harrowing to take a vent-dependent client out and about but the lifted spirits in my client was better than any medication!

Curious: why couldn't you go past the lobby and how could you provide care to him if you weren't with him?
(Not intended to sound rude... just curious.)

My one client just got back from a Disney cruise, courtesy of Dream Come True. They were permitted to bring an extra person, ie: a PDN. So for a while I was hopeful, but they brought the grandmother instead. Ugh!!
