Teacher sends student down because they didn't get enough sleep last night and they're falling asleep in class...."to take a nap or something."

NO!! My tiny office is not equipped for teenager nap time!!!

OMG.

Thanks for listening...rant over...carry on.

you guys... this is one of my favorite things to say: "In the absence of any other symptoms, tiredness is not a reason to see the nurse."

?

Love it. I had a little one come to see my straight off the bus. He looked very distraught and told me "I was cozy in my bed and my mom woke me up". I sympathetically said "I don't have a cure for that". Cutie pie said "ok thanks" and walked a way dejectedly.

thank you. we have a protocol but its just a flow sheet that doesn't really outline anything. so hopefully the trainer will refer him to an md. baffles me that I get no communication from the trainers at all. he is supposed to follow up with the trainer after school today.

as far as my psuedoseizure gal her concussion happened at home. her md order isn't very specific and just related to limiting assignments on the screen. I frequently send her home due to her episodes and not wanting to return to class. previous nurses have allowed her to hang out in the nurses office and I have had a hard time limiting her time in my office but I am trying to keep a boundary with her.

Have you spoken with the trainer and asked for communication with her on a regular basis about who she/he has seen? If not, that might help. Or it could be a reminder if you have already requested this.

Yes, I think this is a good idea to ask for this info... I get a daily email of athletes who see the trainer and for what reason. They use Rank One and he added me to the email list with the coaches.

Edited to add: This will also help you see who may be actually avoiding the trainer. This happens a lot with athletes who don't want to be removed from play.

I have students that will tell their teacher they are not feeling well and then come to the clinic to say I just need some rest.

I go through the questions: Did you sleep last night? what time did you go to bed? Did you wake up earlier than normal? Did you have an un-restful night?

After they answer 9/10 times is because it was their choice to not get enough sleep due to time management. So I just remind them that they choose to be here as they pay to come here. Then I tell them that I am tired, too. I also tell them if you are able to complain about being tired than you really aren't that tired cause that takes a lot of energy to complain.

As for my concussion kids, if I am having an abnormally busy day I send them to our school Library to have quiet time, since I only have a bed and a chair. I let the librarian know that they may only have 15-20 mins. If they are complaining that they need more time then they have to come back to the clinic for re evaluation.

I have not. I should reach out to them. This is my second year here. we are a unique school and our kids travel to two other schools for certain classes and we don't have sports at our school but they can choose to play for one of the other schools. probably just going to take some work on my part to open up communication.

Bazinga!!

I would like to add to this that my bathroom should not be the answer to all bathroom issues. My clinic is very small in size but I see 50-60 kids a day - plus needy staff, plus lots of adults stopping to chit chat, etc. Then you add on.

1. Staff restroom next door is occupied, use nurse bathroom.

2. Student with bathroom stall phobia, use the nurse bathroom

3. Student can't be trusted to use regular bathroom without supervision - use the nurse bathroom.

4. Student needs to change clothes mom brought from being out of dress code - use the nurse bathroom.

5. Student needs to re-insert contact lens (and I know shockingly, has their own solution and case.) - Go use the nurse bathroom.

6. Needs to wash marker off hands - well, you get the point......

My kids that are legit sick with diarrhea poop themselves waiting for my bathroom.

I redirect kids all day to the main restroom.

The only one that I would let use my bathroom would be the one with the stall phobia. My next step would be to send out an email letting teachers know that it needs to stop for two reasons:

It is the SICK room restroom, meaning sick kids use that restroom and now those otherwise healthy kids are exposed.

Sick kids are vomiting in the floor or having diarrhea on themselves because they do not have access to the restroom that is there FOR THEM.
