Off topic: How do you keep house?

Published

My house keeping has gotten so bad lately, that today my husband threatened to hire a cleaning lady. I called his bluff and guess what? He called a cleaning lady to come in and start this friday! :yeah: I'm so thrilled & relieved. It's been terrible trying to keep the house clean with 3 messy kids and a pig of a husband. How do you all handle juggling classes, studying, working, running kids around while keeping the house clean? I feel so blessed to finally get help!

As for hubby, I think the previous comments pretty much sums it up but I think I can do one better. My loving but lazy husband is sooooo lazy that at times instead of getting up to take a you know what, he would relieve himself in an empty water bottle, and to make it worse, I won't find it until I clean underneath the bed and as you guys are already aware of, that doesn't happen too often, especially since I'm still in school. So imagine my suprise and disgust when my little ones comes across his portable toilets.

Yeah, that pretty much takes the cake. I would end up pouring it on his head while he was sleeping, no matter how old or cold it was. Ew!

My husband is lazy also. I sent him an e-mail tonight (he's OOT) and told him I had had it and was going to do something desperate. I'll share it with you guys. This week or next I'm going to tear up all the carpet upstairs and have a hardwood floor put down down. He "insisted" on this very light beige carpet when we built the house and it is now after 5 years so filthy I just can't clean it. We already replaced all the carpet downstairs with hardwood and ceramic tile. You can clean it and disinfect it. I love it. It's about the only thing in the house that stayed reasonably clean.

Hey teapot, my dh and son also throw trash in the sink, what's up with that? Also throw dirty dishes in the sink, when I complain, but they leave the food and bones on them. Gees! Trash compactor & Garbage disposal both at arms length.

P.S. I think I'm becoming addicted to this site.
brightmoon.....I perfectly understand! You could never get therapy anywhere this cheap, reliable, at your fingertips whenever you wish, and in the privacy of your own home,eh? Therapy in your Jammies!

I'm lol about this site. My dh and I have been fighting over this for 13 years. When we got married I had on dd and he had a dd and a ds. Before we were married my house was reasonably clean, I guess with just one kid it was easy. But then I got married to this anal neat freak and it's never been the same. I swear I do 15 loads of laundry a week (we've since had three more kids, so 6 kids although the ds finally moved out this summer). My older girls do their own, but my younger three are 7, 4, 2 and my dh works outside so he wears at least two outfits a day. Then there's the clutter. I"m a bit of a pack rat, and we all agree on that (although I'm trying to declutter my stuff), but my husband 'collects' things. He doesn't consider this packrattish. He has over 50 rifles (!!!!!) lined up along our bedroom and closet walls. Then he has about 20 boxes of these little GI Joe type figures the boxes are the size of shoeboxes, THEN he also collects books. Overflowing from bookshelves, PLUSSSSs he also has over 600 CD's...let's not get into his DVD video collections. Then he brings all this cr#p home from work all the time, boxes of cable etc, PLUSSS all the ammo in the garage that goes with the 60 or more rifles he owns. And he says I'm to blame for the mess. So maybe my not cleaning is some subconscious way to get even?? Not sure about that, but I know I hate a messy house!! And I just can't keep up with it. My dh and I decided to really clean a couple of weeks ago. It took him 8 hours to clean the pool table room. Now he had to take everything out, dust every inch of the furniture etc. meanwhile you can't even walk through our bedroom 'cause the stuff is piled so high. My idea of cleaning is to FIRST straighten the house up and then clean and THEN only THEN if you have time, do the nitpicky stuff, like clean under the fridge. I came home from school the other day, the house is trashed and he asks me if I knew what was under our fridge. Apparently he'd pulled it out to clean under it and it was a mess. That was so much more important than the 10 loads of laundry needing to be put up.... I could go on and on, but you get the point...

Please do go on! It make's me feel better about my house, esp. when I pull out a dried up half eaten ham & cheese sandwich from under my daughter's dresser drawers, or when I open one of the kids lunch boxes to find green & black moldy fuzz growing on something that used to be an apple

Maybe a "Cleaner house support thread" sticky should be started in the break room?

well it gets done in phases so the whole house is never clean at the same time anymore!:chuckle It was difficult for me at first because i am one that likes a clean house and gets depressed if it is messy. Hubby has to help out a lot more. He doesn't complain, but he is messier than I am so he doesn't mind living with more mess either. In general we take 20 minutes before bed each night and sweep the kitchen floor pick up the living room, load and unload the diswasher and wipe down the counters, the rest waits unitl one of us has a part of a day off during the week then the main bathroom gets completely cleaned, a few loads of laundry gets done and put away, and the office gets semi cleaned. Olivia has to clean her room by Friday morning everyweek to get her allowance (usually she does), living room gets vaccumed. The other 2 bathrooms sadly probably only get a good thourough cleaning/mopping once every 2 weeks, It is hard, but other things just have to take precendence. Over spring break though i am going to ge the whole house i order and set up a schedule like i did when Olivia was born, it will help me not to get so far behind.

Amen to that! I told dh and it even grossed him out. I swear I'd be pouring that cold, stinky, wet urine on that man's head while he slept.

You got that right!!!!

Hi guys,

As embarassing as it was to tell the world of nurses about my husband's habit, I only mentioned it to remind you all that just when you think the worst of your husbands, there is always someone eles that can bring a little appreciation to your situation. Of course my husband now clearly understands how disgusted I was with his laziness, stupidity, and other words that I can't use here, but he knows to not do that again because the next time, he will have some extra flavoring with his coffee. And yes, mercyteapot, he does have some issues with his parents that he has begun to work on with a therapist. He's a geat guy and a very involved father and at this point, I won't hold the terrible deed agains't him for too long. It's been awhile, and I do check the beds and so far, its ok. And for you male nurses, sorry if I offend you guys by correlating husbands and laziness. There are certainly some very lazy wives out there. My girlfriend is a total slob but one heck of nurse who is very meticulous and organized at work. Lucky for her, she has a husband who removes her used bubble gum from her side of the night stand. Yes DutchgirlRN, this is a great site for learning, humor, and therapy. Thanks for responding guys!:loveya:

Brightmoon, I hope we didn't hurt your feelings. I realize that although my husband is a horrible slob he is still a very good provider as well as a wonderful loving father. I did appreciate the fact that his laziness could be outdone. I've let out info about myself that is embarrassing but I feel like this is a safe place to do so. We can make light of ourselves but at the same time the vast majority understand that this is life and we all deal with it. If my husband didn't have far more good qualities than bad he would be history. He thinks it's cute when his dog hikes his leg in the house. How disgusting is that !? Of course I make him clean and disinfect it and he does. We have converted to all ceramic tile floors due to having 6 dogs in the house and that way I can lysol to my heart's content.

Changing the subject just a little here....how do you guys deal with it when someone, especially someone from work, wants to come over and your house is an embarrasing mess? I had a nurse from work move in right next door to me  I thought I would freak but then we had an argument because she doesn't like us having 4 cars in the driveway. None of her damm business. She is a total clean freak. She quickly fired our son from mowing her yard so we don't speak. She had her (1 yr old) new home completely redone on the inside and fired at least 4 constructions crews and is suing 2 of them. I would rather be living with a lovable slob! She is a real b****. My hubby thought she was so attractive, which truely she is, but after helping her once carrying something heavy inside and there was a tiny smear on the wall and getting balled out over it, to him, she become very ugly.

Oh, yuck yuck yuck!!! I was just walking through the house and got "stabbed" by something. I looked down, and stuck through my sock - INTO MY TOE - is one of my husband's used toothpicks. Yes, they can puncture skin and cause quite a bit of bleeding! He's got a cold, too, so I'm picturing all these germs spreading from the toothpick to the inside of my toe. I just scrubbed it for five minutes wth an anteseptic wash.

I can't stand that little habit. It's just so gross - a used toothpick is not a pretty thing. He feels really guilty right now, so maybe he'll actually throw them away from now on.

Funny thing is, my dad has the EXACT same habit. When they say girls often marry men like their fathers, I believe it. It's definitely not their only similarity - but it's probably the quirkiest one.

Yeah that's what I don't get in regards to husbands and kids. Why don't they just throw them away. My dh uses those floss things and the end of them can be used as a toothpick. He leaves them and used q-tips laying around. Ewwww! Even stranger than gross he uses those floss things to floss the dogs teeth and they enjoy it! :chuckle
