Barack Obama's health plan takes shape

Source

If Congress were to take a vote on a health reform bill today, Democrats and Republicans would find a surprising level of agreement-so much so that the broad outlines of a consensus plan already are taking shape.

Sick or healthy, rich or poor, all Americans would be guaranteed access to health insurance.

In fact, they'd probably be required to purchase it-perhaps through mandates in the law that would include stiff tax penalties for anyone who tried to opt out.

Newly created insurance marketplaces would make finding a plan as easy as shopping for cheap airfare. People could keep their coverage, even if they switched jobs. And they might be able to choose between private insurers and a government-backed plan.

But here's the catch-none of this would come free, with the wealthiest Americans likely to face higher taxes to help pay for coverage for all.

It's hard to believe that only three months ago, health care advocates worried that President Barack Obama would drop the health reform issue from his first-year agenda. Now, with an August deadline to pass a bill, a compromise that once seemed unimaginable is considered quite possible, both sides say.

We have to pay for this somehow? I'll tell you how it's going to be paid for on the backs of your kids and grand kids does that make you sleep better at night?

Looks like we will be getting that 25% VAT (value added tax) sooner than we thought. Every time a commodity moves it will be taxed. The problem is that Countries that have a VAT don't have the IRS. Also, they do not have 30% of their country with or close to Metabolic Syndrome aka Obese. We will be crushed by this. We are not the Skinny Swiss or the super healthy Japanese. We will need at least a 25% VAT just to touch this.

Nurses will also take an estimated 25% pay cut as well. (You do the math)

You are wrong on your first point. Countries with a VAT do have something very similar to the IRS. And yes, we will have to pay for this somehow.

Thats ok with me. Im fine with the taxation especially if we get a public health option. Nurses need to be the front runners on shaping this policy instead of B&M'in. We could carve a unique role in this system as promoters of wellness. I am so into wellness and it's the key to a healthy society and it does cos..certainly not more than is being stuck to us in our now super-padded cost, do I want to finance something that does not result in death and destruction of another nation state-absofreekinlutely!

I dont understand the horror tales I hear about socialized medicine?? Is it just a boogey man the drug companies and other capitalistic brats have fed us?? I'm sort of ignorant. I have a few friends that live abroad and they say its wonderful. They have never waited a day to be seen in ER or waited months to see a Dr. I don't know where all this comes from?? Medication is cheap, seeing a Dr is free or very cheap, and no one is told "No, we can't do this because your insurance wont cover unless u can come up with $10,000 upfront"

Nurses do make less. In france an RN makes about $15/hr. Germany compares to the US and Canada is slightly less but compares also. If you take into account that you don't have to pay $200 q 2 weeks for a family of 3 to get health insurance It seems WORTH IT!!!

I would like to understand more....If I have it all wrong please enlighten me. If there is a better way let me know. I'll work my rear off on this end to educate people further.

Most of the nurses I work with here in the biblebelt still believe Obama is the second coming of satan, the antichrist and believed GW Bush was Christ incarnate???? ***

some people on here have obviously never had a sick child on chemo and been unable to work because the baby was so sick and dying that you can't tear yourself away for 5 minutes to GET A FREAKIN JOB.

Or had Cancer and been unable to work and been so sick that work was actually impossible, but shame on them for clinging to every moment of precious life and trying to get treatment wherever possible.

GOD FORBID these people ever have to endure being uninsured or underinsured and get truley ill....

What do you think happens to us hard working people that get sick and can't work??? Most of us don't have a $1mill in the bank to afford this countries healthcare costs. Should we just give up and resign to die because "we aren't useful members of society".

Yes there will be leeches on society---there are now!!!! They wont change!! But what about the people i mentioned above???? Our patients, our children, our moms, dads, & ourselves!!! If we don't work to get them cared for --who will?

Your frustration is justified.

This is why tens of thousands of nurses, physicians, and people who believe that no American should be denied needed healthcare will be in the streets.

We have to try.

My conscience will not let me ignore opportunities to improve healthcare in my beloved country.

We are trying to let the President understand that YES...We CAN!

And I suppose the existence of millions of WORKING Americans who can't afford insurance makes you sleep better at night...........?

I want everyones kids and grandkids to have healthcare.

I suppose you want everyone kids and grandkids to have social security as well. Look how well funded that is going to be. You can have great health care if you don't get pregnant at 14 stay off drugs get an education and don't vote democrat. Otherwise healthcare for all will be like Cuban health care for all.

We could do a lot worse than "Cuban health care for all." They spend a tiny fraction per capita of what the US does on healthcare, provide care to everyone in the country, and have outcomes nearly as good, or better than, ours (an even more impressive accomplishment when you consider that the US has been doing everything it can to strangle them economically for the last 40 years).

One thing I think is this.....whether we want this change or not, its gonna happen. Those of us that got into nursing programs to earn $100,000/year and not give a crud about humanity are going to be shuck outta luck!

Those of us that got into nursing to care for others and help our patient then a small paycut here and a little tax hike there should be no problem!! It will take adjustment just like anything else and we will hate it for a minute or two, but just like Canada.....we will love it eventually.

I think President Obama is awesome and his healthcare plan will rock! Of course, he will get a lot of flack from those in financial power that care more about the almighty dollar then those pregnant 14 year olds!

I have some news for everyone. This should come as no surprise- the AMA is single payer system that does not include the insurance companies. Surprise, surprise.
