  1. They say the evidenced based practice now is to check placement of NG tubes with an "end tidal CO2 detector" to ensure its not in the lung, of course. (this is just after dropping one), obtain an xray to visualize placement is correct, and test gastric content for pH after placement. The ol' air bolus thing has gone out the window???? Has anyone else heard this new fangled stuff?? Sorry, this only applies to immediatly after one is dropped down the hatch. But he could have had BM in the tube if he had a nasty bowel obstruction---I've actually seen it backup into the stomach and out the mouth. Yummy
  2. People either like me or hate me. That has been my experience in life. Im loud, opinionated, and strong in personality. I love my patients and will bust ass for them at all times. Nursing is like highschool. Well... most jobs are, especially with a bunch of women gaggled together. (that comments gonna get me yelled at!) I'm a woman, but it seems true. I'm 6'3 so I stand out. I flirt consistantly with the Drs and have a really good rapport with most of them. I snap at the bully nurses and stand up for the new guy or the nurse everyone has chosen to fail. Some jobs I've had I could not survive the hatred or climate of negativity...I'm usually nauseatingly happy! I'm a sagatarius after all. I cuss way too much and do so freely at work around coworkers (but not patients) when I shouldn't and I know it, its a habit I need to break! I get along SO well with the group I work with now...we are in-sinc. They are Christians (and Republicans) and I am not, but they are true Christians that do not judge my hedanism or peganism too harshly. We laugh, have fun, and to my knowlege, no one has back-stabbed me yet!! Fun is the name of the game!! If you can't have fun at work....why bother. There is a season for everything but fun is good. I care very much what people think of me although I'm stubborn and not willing to change to conform to others expectations. I am what I am and if you like me great, if you don't your missin out!
  3. i am a product of welfare! i hate sharing this stuff, but..... a. i was pregnant at 15. my first son was born under medicaid- my entire pregnancy was covered as was his birth and subsequent operations he needed after his birth. i got pregnant not because i didn't know better, but because that seemed like the only way out at the time. :heartbeatif you know anything about about human development you know that "magical thinking" rules the thought processes of teens. their cerebral cortex and higher level of thinking do not come full circle until late teens early 20's. so... even if they "are held responsible" they really don't have the good sense to understand the impact of their actions. they only understand the romantic ideation and delusional thought processes that lead them to the wrong decisions. this is where parental guidance comes in and some kids just don't have it! b. i was an iv cocaine user, homeless, lived in a car, and did not take care of any of my resposibilities! not that i didn't know better---i started out "just trying it" then boom- there i was!! if it wasn't for all this reallocation of wealth, i believe i would be dead! its because of state funded programs that i was able to get treatment at 21, get counseling, medical services, and move out of my car into a home with my child----not to mention go to school! for every 100 addicts only 3 recover! is it worth it? i think so, others say let us all die "we made our beds...." i'm a productive member of society now. i pay taxes. i donate money to help others, i worked in addictions and mental health for years to just help those 3 that will hear what i have to say. i have found the people that usually are against supporting or helping the "ingrates" are rich, have good upbringing, good support systems, and have never been in my situation. after doing 12 years in addictions/ mental health i was frustrated to tears with em, but i would never deny them medical care or treatment. it would be nice if everyone came from a loving home, had great insurance and money, and just "knew better"---but some of us are dense and need a little help. thank god its there.... my straight "a" children are reaping the benefits of a society that helped their mom get better and be a mom! thank you
  4. Still didn't hear any answers to pay rates in Vegas. There are loads of job openings on the net. My sister lives in vegas and we'd thought about moving there. I have experience in about every aspect of nursing at one time or another, but I don't want to end up jobless or at a nightclub waiting tables.
  5. There is a post in the international section under phillipines titled "MOH-Saudi" that might have similar information. I know I was reading it just for fun and it had mentioned some pay in Saudi but not specifically in Dubai. Some of the girls and guys were living in that area and may be able to answer your questions.

  7. i stole this from another thread. i wrote it and i think it applies here too. registered user age: 33 years exp: 10 as lpn 3 as rn nursing specialty: psych, ltc, m/s, supervisor, mrdd, received 59 kudos from 26 posts join date: may 2009 posts: 60 jun 24, 2009, 09:59 pm re: obama's health plan takes shape i think what president obama wants to do is make healthcare accessible to all americans. this means: everyone! rich, poor, middle-class, etc. most of the poverty stricken americans have better access to healthcare then us hard workin middle class folks. most of the people living below the poverty level in the usa can access healthcare and their are programs to help them like medicaid. larger citied have non-profit organizations that help them get meds, free clinic visits, etc. these people your so afraid of supporting are already being supported by you, me, and all other tax payers....that will not change! what the prez is trying to do is cover the rest of us. the healthy wealthy person is already set up, the poor medicaid recipient is already set up....what he's trying to do is fill in the gaps!!! newsflash: you can live a healthy lifestyle, work hard everyday for your family and their health insurance, and still be left without insurance if you were unable to work due to disability from accident of disease!! example: you can be the epitome of physical health...get in an accident and boom!!!---your unable to work due to a fx pelvis, head injury, c-spine fx with paralysis...whatever, you get the point...lets say you exhaust all your fmla, short-term disability, etc and you have to cobra out on your insurance through your former employer at about... 1,000/month(much cheaper now since obama agreed to pay 60%, but still expensive!). you have to do this because all your injuries are "pre-existing" so u dare not lose the insurance you have!!! your short-term disability is running out, your depleting your savings account, etc. due to the loss of your job and $175,000/yr salary, you get behind on mortgage, car, blah, blah, blah. you've exhausted savings and are now faced with losing your cobra because it'll only cover you for 1-2 years and you still need 2 more operations and extensive pt before your able to return to work, if you ever do return to work. :crying2:so there you are!!! unable to work, unable to get better, losing your assets, exhausting all options!!! wouldn't it have been nice to have a health insurance plan that wouldn't have demanded all your savings and covered you with your big salary or without????? now, after all this you will probably qualify for medicaid.....does this make you a "leech on society" or another victim of our flawed healthcare system???
  8. #1. Have u tried to get into a specialist now???? Takes a couple months....It will not change! Canada has the same wait time that we have overall. #2. No, the drug companies depend on development...If costs are contained and governed plus they take away the CEO's private jet and quit paying a drug rep $80,000/yr to pimp their products they will be just FINE!! #3. This will not change. We have an excellent education system and most of these things are developed with aid of grants, at University Hospitals throughout the US---and fyi: Drs and researchers will still study, research, and invent...enough private and public institutions pay for that stuff. #4. UUHHHHH......anyone ever heard of a PPO or a HMO???? What the heck could get worse then that?? #5. We will still be provided with supplemental plans to cover certain items...but if we have "universal" healthcare it will be the SAME for everyone and cover anywhere or any provider (like in CANADA).....so ya that one is probably true....AND A GOOD THING #6. Unless we **** off another country it probably won't change. lol. We will still get access to the research and development of Japan, Sweden, UK, ETC>>>BELIEVE IT OR NOT AMERICA...WE DON'T DEVELOP ALL THE TECHNOLOGY OR MEDICAL ADVANCEMENTS OR BREAKTHROUGHS

  10. Hey guys.....I just got some job postings for agency nurses needed in California for "perm. assignments" and "temp assignments". The agency is tailoredhealthcarestaffing.com if anyone can use it. Experience was not listed as a requirment for employment and might help u get your foot or both feet in the door somewhere in CA. Like I said in another post: California hospitals and facilities are recruiting RN's here in MO???? Don't know why but our papers have offers from there a lot and if I see any I'll let u know. I hate to see Bro's and Sisters in the profession struggling----Crystal Good luck....from Missouri again.
  11. One thing I think is this.....whether we want this change or not, its gonna happen. Those of us that got into nursing programs to earn $100,000/year and not give a crud about humanity are going to be shuck outta luck! Those of us that got into nursing to care for others and help our patient then a small paycut here and a little tax hike there should be no problem!! It will take adjustment just like anything else and we will hate it for a minute or two, but just like Canada.....we will love it eventually. I think President Obama is awesome and his healthcare plan will rock! Of course, he will get a lot of flack from those in financial power that care more about the almighty dollar then those pregnant 14 year olds!
  12. First, let me say good luck to ya>>> I worked, because I had to, during nursing school. I have 4 boys and I was a single mom at the time. I went to school from 730am or 530am(during clinicals), got out of class about 3pm and worked from 3-11pm. I did this everyday- my only day off was Saturday and I tried to spend that day and sunday a.m with my kids til I had to work at 3p. I did study, on the ride to class with another student, during lunch and super breaks, etc. I arranged with my employer to be late on clinical days etc and they worked with me well. I basically farmed my kids out to their grandparents while I was in school except for Sat. and Sun. I know it seemed like a whirlwind of busy!! My house was a wreck, I had NO "me time", and I was exhausted. My grades were never great. I made B's with a C here n there......but I made it, passed boards, n glad its over.
  13. I worked psych in a very tiny town and I live 1 block from the hospital. Our hospital allows us to leave our last names off the badge if we work in psych or ER. I never really thought of it as an issue until I had a psych pt try to track me down. Most of the pts we had were safe and just needed help getting over a bump in the road....but every once in a while you get an obsessive borderline type that believes you are destined to be their best friend--no matter what. I do agree that If someone wants to kill you, beat you up, or just stalk you they'll simply wait in the parking area for ya and follow you home. I still never hold back from using my last name but I think it should be the nurses choice and his/her comfort level...
  14. I don't think you'd see your taxes go up anymore then what u pay for insurance premiums now out-of-pocket to private institutions...that may or may not cover u if u became ill. Atleast, from what I understand, u couldn't be "dropped" from coverage and most insurance companies now have a"cap" on what they will pay. Some of those "caps" are easy to reach if you have to have a major surg. or have mulitple treatments. I think this single payer/ universal plan would benefit small business owners more than anyone else. It's a HUGE expense to buy healthcare for your family + employees if that is what u do now.
  15. I'm so sorry your offended. I think everyone knows there are people that need SSD or SSI and have legitimate claim to it and SHOULD get it. I was just reporting some of the things I've seen....an working for a dr that encouraged and helped able bodied men and women that could work get SSI kindof torked me a little bit. I realize there are people that should get disability, thats what it's there for. But, there are people that do "milk" the system and those are the people I get upset with. Because of there abuse of the system, people like u, that do need the help have to be screened, rescreened, denied, redenied, and go unemployed for 1 year to get the help they need.:redbeathe
