NYU Accelerated Nursing Fall 2020

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi guys! Thought I'd make a forum for NYU's ABSN Program for fall 2020.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Alexis Paige. Currently in California. I received my BA in psych from a private university with a GPA below 3.0. Took pre-reqs in multiple community college while working. Ended up with the same GPA as undergrad ?

Here's my stats:

Anatomy: C (planning to retake in spring 2020)

Physio: A-

Microbio: C+ (planning to retake in spring 2020)

Chem for health sciences: C+

Nutrition: A

Stats: C

Lifespan dev: B

Volunteer experience at Stanford University. Do you think I have chance with NYU? I feel like my only hope in getting in are the letter of recs + personal essay.

Feel free to comment whatever is on your mind. What are your stats? Where are you from and what other schools will you be applying at? Help a sistah out!

I called admissions twice, and left a message once, however, they have yet to get back to me and its been about two weeks.

That's so frustrating!

Hello All,

I am 28 years old and currently reside in New York City. I am a alumna of Hunter College: BA Psychology '14, BA Sociology '17. While I completed my second BA i took a few pre-reqs. I've also taken pre-reqs at Fordham U, City College of Tech, and John Hopkins School of Nursing online, I originally wanted to do PT, and then PA, but am not interested in taking organic chemistry/or biochem. I lost my passion for physical therapy while working in the field. My stats are as follows:

Pre-Reqs:

A&P I w/lab: B+

A&P II w/lab: B

Stats: A

Microbio w/lab: B+

Chem I: A-

Chem Lab: A

Dev Psych: A

Nutrition: Summer 2020

Volunteer experiences:

Lenox Hill Hospital: 2012

Mt. Sinai SLR (St. Luke's): 2015

Mt. Sinai Queens: 2016

VA NY Healthcare Harbor System: 2017

Work:

Physical Therapist Aide: 2016-2019

Children's Care Manager: 2019-current

Certifications:

Chemicals and Health

Psychological First Aid

Victim Intervention Program (rape, domestic violence, and sexual assault)

The reason why I am posting this is because I took Microbio online at John Hopkins School of Nursing. I will also be taking Nutrition online. I wonder if that will hinder my acceptance. Any thoughts?

Also, does NYU ABSN offer any Scholarships?

You have good grades. Ever thought about applying to Columbia?

Thank you for the nice compliment :D I am currently only interested in accelerated nursing. I don’t believe Columbia has an ABSN program just yet. I applied to pace, LIU, and NYU.

off course they do lol it’s even a masters program. 15 months long. i just got accepted. i’m only on here because i’ve been considering applying to NYU so i can have more options.

I believe they only have the MDE program. But I should apply, you’re right! Thanks for the idea.

If you don’t mind me asking, did Columbus offer you any money (scholarships, etc)?

yeah the mde program is basically the same thing as the accelerated bachelors. it’s just that you graduate with a masters degree. they haven’t given info about the scholarship yet. they said they’ll let us know within the next two weeks. but from what i’ve heard almost everyone gets a scholarship. and if you decide to go to their doctorate np program, directly after completing the mde, you automatically get awarded the seamless scholarship, which is around 40k.

Sorry, meant to write Columbia *

I think I’m just worried about the price tag associated with a masters program as opposed to a bachelors. Also, holy cow, that’s pretty decent. I definitely want to move forward and get the NP.

I’m sad I missed the deadline for the June 2020 cycle because if I get into any of my ABSN programs, I am going to go for it. However, the MDE looks like a better deal considering Columbia does a fixed rate tuition for this program. Columbia is also an Ivy League lol. NYU is going to end up being so much more expensive, I’m afraid. Hope they offer me some money if they accept me.

yeah the price tag is definitely a concern. but it really isn’t that much different compared to other programs including nyu. what really makes a difference is the scholarship amount that each school offers.

you have really great volunteer experience! I want to either volunteer or get an internship this summer. How was the Mt Sinai ones? And do you think volunteering is essential to prospective nursing students? Sucks that they’re unpaid but i’ll do whatever it takes

Hey,

Thank you. I actually found my experience at Mount Sinai to be quite boring. I did patient rounding, and so basically my job was to go from room to room to find out if there was anything I could do to make the patients more comfortable. Most of the patients were post surgery and either asleep or in sever pain and didn’t want to chat. It wasn’t until the end that I started helping out with hospital events. I was also invited to the psych ward to help with activities (that was cool). But, I didn’t volunteer for excitement. No biggie.

Mount Sinai Queens was a little less boring because I was paired with a physical therapist and so we visited patients and assessed them.

The volunteer experience I enjoyed the most was with Lenox Hill because I did a bunch of different things. I worked in the physical therapy department for a few months and then in the ER doing inventory. This was back in 2012, though, when I just started Hunter College, so I’m not sure if things are the same.

I think it is important to volunteer for sheer exposure. Throughout the years I’ve seen many things: a woman in labor, a person go in to cardiac arrest, etc.

Most places cap your hours at like 4-6 a week. It might be unpaid but that kind of time is negligible especially compared to a full time job. I often did a few hours on Saturdays, and a few on Sundays.

Thank you for explaining your experiences. I figured it could be kind of boring since your duties are limited. But I will look into Lenox Hill in addition to the other hospitals I was looking at. Definitely exposure would be the most important thing for me

Your best bet is to go in person because a lot of these hospitals are overwhelmed with applications (which in essence is an incredible thing).

I wish you best of luck!
