Published

hey there!

i just submitted my application for nyu, fall 2009. it was a pretty lengthy process, which i guess is good because their application is very well rounded. now the waiting starts!

Thanks so much for the info! Sorry to keep asking so many ?'s but its such a big decision b/c it is a very large amount of money. At this point it looks like it will have to be mostly my own through private loans. I will def look into citibank, I also found one through Wells Fargo it sounded good for healthcare students.

Before, I decide, which has to be done in 2 DAYS! I have a few more ?'s.

I was told that NYU has a call service that will transport you at any time of the night, like from lib to dorm if needed, is this true?

Also, I am worried about getting to clinicals and back, is this ever an issue?

As far as dorming goes, is that an issue? are you placed with someone in the program? Do you or should you get a meal plan?

How do you pick clinical placement? Is there any place in particular to avoid? or any to try to get?

Do you have any idea what percentage of students pass the Ncelx? they did tell me they have review included through Kaplan, is this true?

Lastly and most importantly I am aware that this is an extremely rigerous program, is it doable??? And if so, I have a 3.7 Im nervous about keeping up...how does NYU's acedemics compare to other schools, harder? same? How is the staff/ professors? Is it worth the money????

So sorry for all the ?'s. Im just anxious about the decision b/c of the money, mostly. If you have time to get back to me I'd really appreciate it. Thank you SO much!

I've never used the service, but yes, it exists. It's offered through the department of public safety.

This hasn't been an issue for me. I live in Manhattan and I've been lucky enough to get into clinicals in Manhattan which are all accessible by the subway. In fact, all of the clinical sites are accessible by subway. Some of them are further away and you'll have to leave earlier, but you won't have a problem getting there. The clinical sites are typically posted before you register, so you'll have an idea of what borough your clinical is in before you register.

I'm not really sure how dorming works because I live in an apartment. I know a few accelerated students who live in the dorms and they got placed together without requesting it. I think that NYU tries to pair you with someone your age and in your program, if possible. And I'm not sure about the meal plan. I would think that it's easier than buying all of your food because I doubt the dorm rooms have a ton of room for food storage, but that's total speculation. I don't really know. Sorry :)

How do you pick clinical placement? Is there any place in particular to avoid? or any to try to get?

Usually they post which clinical sections are in which neighborhoods... for instance, they'll say sections 2, 4, and 7 are in Manhattan; sections 1, 3, and 11 are in Brooklyn, etc... So you don't know which hospital you'll be in, but you have a pretty good idea of the area. They do say that the sites are never 100 precent confirmed until after registration. I haven't had a problem getting into the clinicals I wanted to. It becomes more difficult when you make friends and you all want to be at clinical together though. And I don't know of any clinical sites to avoid. I've heard a bunch of things about all the different sites and it just seems to me that you'll get a different experience everywhere. My favorite site so far has been Cornell, but I was on a really good unit with great nurses, so that definitely sways my vote.

Do you have any idea what percentage of students pass the Ncelx? they did tell me they have review included through Kaplan, is this true?

I'm not sure of the exact percent of people that pass the NCLEX. When I emailed the school last year with that question I think they told me it varies by year, but it's usually between like 90 and 96 percent. I'm not sure about the Kaplan thing. I remember hearing that too, but it seems so far away that I haven't investigated it yet. I think I heard that we do a lot of NCLEX review in the last semester. And I think that if you can make it through the program, the NCLEX will be fine.

Lastly and most importantly I am aware that this is an extremely rigerous program, is it doable??? And if so, I have a 3.7 Im nervous about keeping up...how does NYU's acedemics compare to other schools, harder? same? How is the staff/ professors? Is it worth the money????

LOL, that's a lot of questions at once... The program is difficult, but it's doable. You have to come here ready to work hard and be committed to the time you'll spend studying and being in class. I'm a professional procrastinator (in fact, I should be studying for my last final right now) and I'm still doing fine. You won't have to worry about your GPA dropping because you don't pass a nursing class with a C. They will let you retake the class if you need to, but a B- is the lowest passsing grade. Your professors will be more than willing to help you if you are struggling in a class, as will your fellow classmates. Everyone wants everyone else to do well and pass. I'm not really sure how NYU is compared to other schools. My first degree is in Biology and that was a relatively difficult major, so I don't really know how to compare it to NYU. I know that NYU has a great reputation and I doubt anyone with a degree from here will have a problem finding a job.

As far as money goes, if you're looking at other accelerated programs you have to just decide which one is worth it for you. I know NYU is expensive, but when I decided to go back to school I knew I wanted to go to a good school and I knew I'd be in a ton of debt when I was done. I think at NYU you're kind of paying for the name, but I don't have a problem with that. I'm sure some people do. You just have to decide which is the right place for you.

Kelzy,

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time out to answer my ?'s. It is so nice of you!!!

Thank you so much, I'll def let you know what I decide! Good luck with your last final! .

LOL, oh yeah my final... haha. Thank you! And you're so welcome. I very clearly remember being in your situation last year and how scary that was, so I'm more than willing to help if I can. Let me know if you have any more questions :)

Good luck!

I am still waiting to here something from NYU. I, like some of the other people on here got into Georgetown, but I am really not sure what school I would go to if I got in at both. I have always wanted to live in NY, but I am a little concerned about the program size being so large at NYU. Georgetown has a much smaller program, but I have heard the same thing about both programs. People say that you have to learn most of the information on your own and that there is little support offered. I think that there were a few people on here who were able to call NYU and get some answers about their applications. I called today and they couldn't tell me anything. I spoke to someone in the admissions office. Is there anyone who was able to get some sort of response about their application? If so, could you please tell me aif I am calling the right people or if anyone knows of the right person to speak to. My deposit for Georgetown is due in 3 days and I don't know what to do.

call the admissions department and tell them your situation.. ive heard that if they do that they will put a "rush" on your application... maybe GU can give you a little extra time

Someone mentioned something about Chemistry and only having 3 credits. I noticed that they require 5 credits is that correct? I was planning on quickly taking my Chem pre-req at a cuny school (since my last one was over 10 years ago:(

But all of them are only 4 credits! Does this mean I have to take 2 Chem classes for that 1 extra credit??

Hey,

Call the admissions office and tell them your situation. Ask them to transfer you to Maggie Lucas, she's part of the whole admissions process and review and helped me out a lot! She should get back to you within 48 hrs. I believe that they are sending the letters out in bunches. I know they had over 4,250 applicants for the program this year. Good Luck!

Hey,

I was in the same boat. I took Chem at a diff school and it was only 4 credits. Dony worry about it b/c they just pull 1 credit over from your undergrad. You dont need to take 2 chems. Thats what they did for me.

hey alicia09,

i got your private message, but for some reason i can only receive them. i can't reply. sorry. i still haven't heard anything from nyu. it is making me crazy. i have to put a deposit down at georgetown by this friday and i don't know what to do. i called the admissions office at nyu a few days ago and they told me that letters would probably be sent out by the end of this week. from what i have read on other posts, in past semesters some people did not hear until a few days before july orientation. it seems like some people were able to get answers by explaining their situation to the admission office, but they could not tell me anything. i applied in february. when did you send in your application. feel free to pm me. i can see the messages i just can't write back. i hope everything works out for you!
