Hey guys:

I used craigslist actively and found a place already. I was lucky enough to find a location and secure it for the last week of August. I'll be apt sharing with another female who is not an NYU student but the same age. I was realistic about the situation, set a budget for myself when it came to rent and extremely proactive about finding a place. If you're by yourself and looking for a place, it's much easier [in my opinion] versus a group of 3/4 people looking for an apartment share- In that situation, it might just be better to wait till the last minute [July/August] to roam the city and find a place. It took me 2 trips to the city. But you also have to keep in mind that people like to see a face when they're asking you to sign a lease etc., . . so it all depends on how many trips it might take to secure a place. With that said, for some of you traveling from the West coast or from hours away, it might benefit you to live on campus for the Fall semester and look at apartments on weekends during that semester for the upcoming Spring. Plus that way you'll have become a little more familiar with the area, subway system and have a better understanding of where classes/clinicals/labs are.

P.S- Alisara: if you do decide to get off-campus housing and ask for a refund on your $1000 deposit , you should contact the housing dept. because they told me you don't get back all your money, you get back a lot less! So I don't know if you're aware of this or not, but just wanted to put that out there for everyone!

Thank you all for the feedback.

Hi! I was recently accepted to the 15 month accelerated nursing program. I sent in a deposit for on campus housing. However, I am still skimming craigslist for apartments. I would definitely like to live close to Washington Square Park or the NYU Medical Center. Also, it is ideal to live with someone else in the program. That way we can be in touch. If someone is interested in getting an apartment with one or two people let me know.

I think i might know someone.

send me a mess and ill give u info, my friend is looking for an apartment.... she is also starting NYU in the fall (accelerated), i am transfering from NYU

Hi Kelzy, I see that you are in the accelerated program already, and I was wondering if you could give your honest feedback on how you feel about your experience at NYU as a whole, but especially in regards to the professors?? I've been hearing mixed reviews and would be interested in anything you have to say- it would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much!! =)

Everyone in the program has differing opinions on professors so you're going to find it difficult to get a consensus. Personally, I've not been overly impressed with some of my professors. Some of them are great, and some of them are not. Honestly, I've felt like I've taught myself about 50 percent of the material that we've learned and the rest has come from professors. It can be frustrating when you're paying a lot of money to go to school and you feel like the professor is up there reading their powerpoints and you're wasting your time. But then again, that doesn't apply to every class and every professor. It's like any other school that you'd go to.. you're gonna have some great experiences in class and then you're gonna have some lousy ones.

I'd say that I learn the most from my clinical experiences and my clinical instructors and I have not had one instructor that I didn't like. They've all been extraordinarily great, and to me, that's more important than having a good lecture professor anyway. I learn by doing things, not by sitting in a class and getting talked at. And I've haven't heard anything too awful about any of the clinical instructors, so I think you're safe there.

I feel like this program is about 95% of what you put into it. If you study hard, you'll learn. If you're eager and willing to try things at clinical, then you'll get to try things. You're going to get the experience that you want if you're willing to make the effort. I would suggest not going into the program with many preconceived notions about what it's going to be like... you should go into it knowing what you want so you know what you're working for and you don't let your classmate's opinions affect the experience you're getting.

Got it? LOL :D

Thanks for the honest response Kelzy! I guess that's pretty much what I was expecting to hear, no program is going to be perfect...of course I'd love to hear that it's been going absolutely wonderful and that everyone is happy at NYU ;-) but I definitely understand that we get out what we put in, especially in a program where so much of the experience is hands on...good luck with the rest of your summer session, and final semester coming up!!!! :wink2:

hello im new to allnurses and am applying to NYU accelerated program in October. i wanted to ask all of you who got into the program (btw congrats!) if you think i might have a chance of getting in for spring 2010.

I have a BA from UC Santa Cruz in Anthropology with a undergraduate gpa of 3.38. For pre-rec i have: A's in Stat, physiology, Nutrition, Psy. B's in microbio and anatomy. And a C in chemsitry.

I have letters of recs from my microbio professor and employer at Planned parenthood. I volunteered at Planned p for about 5 months before i began working there.

I am wondering if i have a chance of getting in with a C in chemistry. Also would applying before the application deadline increase my chance of getting in?

student002 - Ah, this anxiety was all too familiar a couple of months ago. I was actually in the same boat as you- I received a grade of "C" in chemistry when I took it during my freshman year at USC. I didn't bother retaking it because I ended up switching majors and didn't need it. My overall GPA was slightly lower than yours- and so I was extremely nervous about not getting into any Accelerated BSN degree programs considering how competitive they are. Knowing that my GPA likely wasn't to par with a lot of applicants, I spent A LOT of time focusing on my personal statements. I think this helped out a lot- especially for NYU because from what I've heard, their application process is a bit more well-rounded. They also have section in their application that allows you to explain to the admissions committee anything that may have hindered your academic success in the past.

So, don't feel discouraged with your chemistry grade and there's no harm in applying! I got accepted to both NYU and Georgetown's programs for this fall- and ended up choosing NYU over GU because GU actually wanted me to retake chemistry over the summer to meet their minimum science prerequisite grade of "B-" (which wasn't an option for me because I was continuing to work full-time and was taking microbio over the summer).

By the way- I submitted my application to NYU 3 hours before it was due :p (for early decision)- I REALLY wouldn't encourage this though lol. At the same time, I think this shows that admittance isn't dependent on the order they receive applications either. Best of luck!

thank you so much for your reply! i feel like im going a little bit crazy thinking about NYU non-stop :) its great to hear from someone who has been through the same process.
