Hello everyone,

Kelzy, Mehr etc,

I feel really guilty about choosing oncampus housing (hopefully 26th). I just sent in the first round of deposits, and I know you can decide by july 17. I just dont think it would be feasible to compete while in california - this stress and hassle of finding a place and making sure it works out seems like a stretch for me, who knows no one really in new york....

what do you guys think? for my situation (no friends/connections, not from or in new york/just starting the program) would you reccommend student housing? I want to meet people and Im hoping that living with other students will ultimately make me happier as i transition....****, im nervous!

thanks all,

Alison

Hey there! Don't worry, it'll work out!! I'm from California as well and I didn't know a soul before I moved out here. In fact, I didn't even have an apartment lined up until I moved. I got really lucky so I don't think that you made a mistake. For me, it was about saving money and not wanting to live in a dorm again. I lived in dorms for two years of my first undergrad and I just had no desire to do that again. And it wasn't that I hated it, I just didn't want to live in dorms again. However, I know several people in the program (some of them are fellow Californians) who are living in student housing and they are totally okay with it. They like it, in fact. And several nursing students actually got placed in dorms together.

I think the dorms are easier and way more convienant, expecially if your plan is to move back to Cali when you're done with school... you don't have to buy furniture and stuff. Also, you don't have to worry about a huge deposit like you do in an apartment. I can't say that I wish I were in a dorm because I love where I'm living and I'm lucky enough to have a roommate that has become a really great friend, but I don't think choosing the dorms is the wrong thing to do. You're going to stress out enough when you start classes, don't start now! :)

Kelzy : i couldn't agree more!

Thanks for the encouragement! I know you're right and I just have to get used to the fact that living in new york is expensive. Do you think any nursing students end up in the other upperclassman dorms, like greenwich village? The scary thing now is that i ultimately wont know where they place me until August!

Anyone living in dorms, lets keep in touch - Im not elligible yet to complete the application for housing yet, but if anyone wants to potentially share a 2 bedroom let me know.

Me: artistic, cellist, passionate about health, went to berkeley and have lived here for the past 6 years! excited/terrified of the big city...

mehr, kelzy, thanks again for the support!

Update!

I called Financial Aid and spoke to a really nice guy and explained my situation. He said he would get back to me later today with the information I needed, and he did! So it's official, I'm going to NYU!

The ID number they put on all of my materials was the not ID number they used when putting together my financial aid information which is weird, but the reason that I could not access it via the website.

Next question: Anyone already living in NY thats going to school in the fall? I don't have health insurance in NY and need to take care of those health forms - they're intimidating! Is it easier to take care of than it looks? I'm thinking of looking to the NY Dept of Health to see if they can cover those vaccines.

See you guys in the fall :)

hey,

i'm only coming from ct and i'm nervous too. everyone is in the same boat so you will be fine! the city can be overwhelming at first but once you get used to it, it's actually very easy to get around ect. i would rather not live in the dorms either but hopefully it'll work out for the best as far as getting used to living in the city, school, and meeting people goes. then, we always have the option of finding our own places for the summer and fall. good luck with everything!

I am already in NY and will be attending the NYU 15 month program in September. I have not started the forms and I do not have any sort of health insurance. I will just accept the NYU's coverage but I also need to get the health forms filled out. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking about just paying out of pocket.. can I just have a physician do all the forms in one shot? Or does it take multiple trips? Please advise?

Also- regarding the stafford loan, where do we do the entrance interview? I completed the promissory note but for soem reason i cannot find where I do the entrance interview...

Thanks again!!

Does anyone else feel overwhelmed? Like thinking that they won't get everything they need done in time? I'm pretty nuts about getting stuff done asap, so the fact that I can't even register until my deposit is in is killing me. I can't give it to them until next week and I feel like i'm going to get screwed over with all the leftovers for classes/clinicals.

Has anyone completed the health forms or is in the process of having them filled out? Can it be done in one doctor's visit? Is it just that one packet (the 10 page student health clearance forms) that needs to be filled out or are there others? Please advise. Has anyone encountered any issues with having them filled out or was your doctor pretty thorough? I made an appt for next week with a doctor that I am not familiar with and do not have health insurance either. I want to make this as stressfree as possible. The only thing I have is the MMR shots (measle mump rubella) record from my first undergrad like 10 years ago. These health forms look very intimidating...

Thanks for any input and for listening!

Don't worry, it's not as bad as it looks.

I definitely felt that way too before I started getting the paperwork taken care of. First off, the doctor doesn't need to fill out 10 pages worth of information, it's really only like 3 of those pages (or 4 if you're refusing the Hep B vaccine). I live in NYC now and it was easiest for me to go to my old doctor in MA who had all my records. The biggest pain for me is having to get the varicella vaccine, which it turns out i'm not immune to. I tried to get the shot a the DOH here but they won't give it to adults, only young children. I'm going to have to go BACK to MA to get the vaccine from a hospital there..

Anywho if you're going to a doctor you've never seen before it should be okay. He's going to have to give you a physical anyways, as the form requests that. He'll prob just give you the TDap and TB shot if you don't have documentation of having it, and the titers to see if you need the shots for varicella or HepB. If you've had the menengitus shot within the past 10 years you won't need that. It'll probably be more annoying to pay for the shots if you're uninsured than it is to get the paperwork filled out.

If you can get all your immunizations records from wherever you received them and have them on hand BEFORE your appointment- that'd be the best thing for you to do. I've jumped from several doctors because of going back in forth from being insured to not being insured- so I hear you on that. But having all your records on hand before you walk into a new doctors office. . This will help you out immensely and make the appointment go by faster along with filling out the paper work. As for the nursing paperwork, the doc's and nurses know what to do, they get this stuff all the time. My doctor knew exactly what to do. Trust me, you're not the first student coming in that has to go to nursing school and get these forms filled out-- chances are your doctor has filled similar forms out before!

If you are behind on your immunizations, be prepared to have a lot of blood drawn! Because NYU is asking for titers- for proof of immunizations- they will more than likely take your blood and prick you w/ the vaccinations you need. WITH THAT SAID.. eat a well balanced meal before you go in to the doc appt. and drink plenty of fluids [ plus you'll be pee'in in a cup for your physical as well lol - so drink up!]

So if you're smart about being organized about your immunizations records, you'll get everything filled out within a week [ because the results of your titers take a week or two] . If you're paying out of pocket, I think one Hep.B shot costs about $80 [ you need 3 of those] . and others might be a little less pricey, but maybe you should inform your doctor that you are un-insured, if you haven't already-

Hi! I was recently accepted to the 15 month accelerated nursing program. I sent in a deposit for on campus housing. However, I am still skimming craigslist for apartments. I would definitely like to live close to Washington Square Park or the NYU Medical Center. Also, it is ideal to live with someone else in the program. That way we can be in touch. If someone is interested in getting an apartment with one or two people let me know.

NJYenta,

Hey,

I also sent in a deposit, but am vaguely interested if you (or someone else) had access to the city and could do the craigslist thing. Campus housing is super expensive, so I'm not 100% sure I want to do it. Are you on facebook? I'd be curious to talk and get to know each other. Are in in the ny area such that you could actively look for housing? let me know!
