Howdy. Is it as bad as you thought? lol I hope not. I heard you guys had to give actual bed baths in lab, sweet, lol The course gets better when you start ur clinicals, then you get to make up your nursing plans, joy joy!! There are books in the library that can help you with them. Or check out half.com or ur book stores. Half.com would be cheaper, and havaing a book totally up to date isnt that important. I have "Nursing care care plans 6th ed) ISBN 9780323039543 Its a good book. if your short for cash, it is not a MUST have! check ur local libraries as well. Check ebay and search for "nursing care plans" some older books for like $5!!
As well for ur drug passage exam that you take in LAB, you will get a list of drugs you need drug cards for! Think there was a list of about 30. One can either make them up on ur own, OR buy drug cards! MEC bookstore has them or Borders! if you sign up for a Borders reward card (its free) u get weekly coupons emailed to ya, and quite often they are for 20% off!! And they have the Mosby ones and Med-Deck. i ahve the Med Deeck and i think it was only mssing one of the drugs that we had to know. During the drug passage exam, ur allowed to look at ur med cards if u forget, just like you would on the floor! At least that was the case last yr, things are always changing! Cheers
Regarding the drug dosage calculation test- were there any surprises? was it like the practice problems they gave us?
The practice test they give in 111 is pretty much like the real one you will get in 118 but still there might be some questions that will catch you by surprise. The best way to prepare is to do as many practice questions as you can. Go on different website and complete quiz after quiz until you are able to get 100% every single time.I know there is a link on the student nurses forum for various website that have drug dosage caluculation tests. Good luck!
I dont think their were any surprises .Just READ THE QUESTION!!! As well read the INSTRUCTIONS!! Talking with others people fails because:
1) they rush through it, some (very few) think its a race! It is not
2)Read the instructions and the question
3) ROUND OFF!!! Some forget to round off, or round off incorrectly
4) You have to have a pre sding zero, ie 0.7ml (not .7ml)
5) And NO trailing zeroes, ie 0.7ml (not 0.70 ml) And u wil l get it wrong id you put that trailing zero, sounds silly, but thats were mistakes are!
6) if you get a question that you have to round lb to kg and then admin so many ml per kg. First u have to round lb to kg, right, after u convert ur lb to kg and ur answer for exampl is 56.789 kg, DON"T round that off yet, multiply that 56.789kg by the # of ml. Some students want to round it to 56.8 kg x the ml, but don't!!
7) DOuble, triple check your work, and really go over the whole question to make sure you didnt accidently put in a wrong #, read it wrong, misplaced a decimal, didnt put a presiding zero, no trailing zeros!!
Study, and ya shall do well. The testing centre on the 1st floor is a great tool
Ya, for us, the 111 exam didnt count, it was given to see where you stood. Think we wrote it in Dec??? The 118 maybe was a bit trickier, but was the same "math" One just has to read the question and see what they want. They love to throw in extra information/numbers that you do not need!! I know on our nur 216 dosage exam there was was extremely easy questions, BUT you had to know what they were asking, and talking to some, they got them wrong. 1 cc = 1 ml! OOdles of drug dosage sites on the web, just google them, and visit the drug dosage forum on here thats in the students lounge. Keep in mind people do their set up differently, so that can confuse one a bit. Highly recommend the tutor centre on the 1st floor.
The question was how goes the battle? I feel like I am slowly loosing the battle. That Fluids and Electrolytes test really brought my grade down. I am not sure what happened. I didn't think it was that hard during the test. I hope next test will be better.
Does anyone know if it is better to take Psych or Maternity lecture first next semester?

You guys are doing it differently than what we did. We took psych in our 3rd semester, and from what i have read, you now have two separate classes in ur second semester.
I'm not sure it really matters. I did like have my psych lecture the same time as my psych clinical. my grades for both sections werwe about the same, maybe a bit higher in OB.
I think the finals tend to be easier than the regualr exams, but of course maybe its because I study more, lol
many people fear the Psych rotation, but I found it to be ok, not an area i want to go in (neither is OB,lol) but it was interesting. Of course most gals enjoy the OB,so maybe save the best for last!! Cheers
Yeah, Fluid and Electrolytes was a difficult test. It took us all by surprise. Make sure you prepare for the final, it was hard when you compare it to the other tests that we took first semester. But it was easy compared to all the other finals you will take during Nursing school. Most important thing to remember is to manage your time during the final. Make sure you get an opportunity to answer every question. Good luck!

Man that all sounds chaotic. I found some Sim Lab Video video on the nursing website about their robotic simulator. If they don't give demonstrations and just expect people to know exactly what to do based simply on reading and watching a video (I assume the nursing skills online material) I would assume that would be a problem for many students.
