NVCC First yr students, How goes the battle?

Published

Howdy. Is it as bad as you thought? lol I hope not. I heard you guys had to give actual bed baths in lab, sweet, lol The course gets better when you start ur clinicals, then you get to make up your nursing plans, joy joy!! There are books in the library that can help you with them. Or check out half.com or ur book stores. Half.com would be cheaper, and havaing a book totally up to date isnt that important. I have "Nursing care care plans 6th ed) ISBN 9780323039543 Its a good book. if your short for cash, it is not a MUST have! check ur local libraries as well. Check ebay and search for "nursing care plans" some older books for like $5!!

As well for ur drug passage exam that you take in LAB, you will get a list of drugs you need drug cards for! Think there was a list of about 30. One can either make them up on ur own, OR buy drug cards! MEC bookstore has them or Borders! if you sign up for a Borders reward card (its free) u get weekly coupons emailed to ya, and quite often they are for 20% off!! And they have the Mosby ones and Med-Deck. i ahve the Med Deeck and i think it was only mssing one of the drugs that we had to know. During the drug passage exam, ur allowed to look at ur med cards if u forget, just like you would on the floor! At least that was the case last yr, things are always changing! Cheers

What irks me--and it has nothign to do with the students---is that th eonline students listen to the exact same lecture as we traditional students do, BUT they get extra homework to do, and we do not! Yes that sounds better for us traditional students BUT, that homework they get is a valuable tool to study from!! Plus they get marked for it, so their exams are worth less!!! Just very weird!!

I think this can go either way. I can definitely say that many of the open book quizzes they give online students are ridiculous and the book is no help at all, so I have wished to not have to do so many stupid assignments before. Last semester all the open book quizzes very nearly bumped me down to the next letter grade.

The group projects, too, were seriously a waste of time the way they are formatted. People would just not do the work and wait for the rest of the people to do it for them.

I think there are trade offs for every situation, and it's not as cut and dried as it being "easier" for the online students because of the extra assignments.

Just doesn't make sense why online have those extra assignments? And you can't tell me some students are not cheating! Too easy to get on a phone and do it together! Or just have ur book open to the pharmacology chapter. And Im not talking about the "true" online course, just the one that started this fall with NUR 216

Yeah, I don't know about the online section, I'm just talking about prior semesters. My grades would have been better if I did not have all these piddly little assignments distracting me from studying for the tests.

They did change the format of the online exams now too - each question is separated from the rest of the test and they are in a randomized order. You can't go back and check your answers anymore - and you only get 55 minutes like everyone else. So I think they are working through the kinks. I think with the new format it would be pretty difficult for people to cheat, but that's just my impression.

interesting. Someone who wrote the last exam stated they weren't suppose to be able to go back, but they were able to (they didnt chg their answers!!! maybe just a glitch! But seriously if you had ur book open to 1 section, such as pharmacology, there are some easy points, lol

In my Psychology class (non nursing one) the prof caught 6 students cheating on a open book take home exam!! lol

But I would love to know the reasoning why online students get extra work? For NUr 216, they listen to the exact lecture at the exact same time as us traditional students??? Not that big of a deal, just curious, lol

To whoever said that the nursing program seems unorganized -- thank God I am not the only one! I feel like they don't even plan out our lab exercises. Like if we do the modules, they don't have to teach the concepts, they just give us the supplies and vamoose. Today open lab was accidentally scheduled (by a lab instructor, mind you) over their lunch break and when we all showed up, they glared at us and kept eating their lunches. I just hope clinical is more organized, so that we can get adequate pracice for the skills we will be expected to know once we graduate.

Flames, how interesting. I was certainly not able to go back and view previous questions.

I used to go thru my test and do the easy ones first, then the math, then the harder ones, and it was my strategy. I am kind of ****** they did this without telling us.

They offered at the beginning of the semester that we could choose to take our tests either online or on campus, and if I knew they would be changing that, I would have gone on campus to take them.

Oh, well. Next time they offer a choice I'll surely ask more questions.

Well I guess they have to do something to ensure it is somewhat fair, lol Prior to registering for nur 216 i was asking about how the tests would be conducted and they were not sure--do at home, or on online or come into testing centre on such a day!! So i stuck with the in classroom lecture, bring my laptop and if its a boring lecture, time to play some online card games, lol A few of the instructors think reading from the powerpontslides equals teaching!! I think we all passed a reading test, lol

A lab is in a bit of a flux as 1 prof retired to look after her daughter who is havign pregnancy issues, so they are short staffed. last yr we were told the higher ups didnt want the lab instructors actually going over the subject at hand---you were to get all that info from the online videos and the book!! But they stil went over it. Normally the 1st half was going over the material, and last half actually doing it. It wil get better, lol

Are you doing lab this rotation or next? I test out tomorrow, and I am really looking forward to being done. I have been going in almost every day to practice. I was there last Friday and there was a huge crowd.

Im in psych clinical now, but did lab first half. I tested out first thing Monday morning!!! No more lab for this semester! lab is only a half a semester as well in the last semester! 2 more computer lab programs, but dont take as long as the ones we just completed, Picc lines and 1 other!!

Regarding the lab, are higher up trying to save on time? I watch the modules, read but when I get into class, I still want to see a live demostration on what I'm learning and the correct way to do the procedure. The modules are good, but they are not so great as to replace teaching.

That happend to me too.

I guess the higher up figure if u watch the videos, do the modules, and read the book, you should be ok! NOT!!
