Nursing theory = gobbledygook

Theory of self becoming, cosmic unity, unique and borrowed theory -

Is it just me or did someone on heavy drugs come up with this stuff?

I am in a distance learning program for my masters. The first course is on Theory. Now, Im sure in a classroom some of this might make more sense but the more I read and research, the less convinced I am that this is the way to advance our profession!!!

I would very much like to read more from people who think that a lot of this theory is CRAP. Unless you have something for me to read that might convince me otherwise.:uhoh3:

I will press on, get my masters, smoke some dope and write my own theory. Then I can get published, retire and someone else will have to study it in order to advance THEIR education.

I've been out of nursing school for 6 years and still remember thinking what you thought "These people must be smoking pot". :)

Load and dump, as one of my instructors used to say.

Kind of sad but learn it for the test and then forget about it.

Hey, I thought the same thing when I was in Grad School.

The best I can tell you is to build your own theory of practice...makes more sense.

And if you decide to teach it to others and they do not give you dumb looks...you possibly have a winner there.

I agree with you though...the field of nursing has got to do better in this area. It is one of our weak points.

But, hey, save that book. Store it under your bed, and if you ever suffer from insomnia, drag it out and read it. 15 minutes ought to put you night-night!!!! :D :devil:

One of the funniest and wittiest nursing articles that it has ever been my pleasure to read was in an British Nurisng Times and it was the theory of "Hole-istic" Nursing where the patient may be seen as a collection of holes into which nurses place things. An example of this of course is the mouth a hole wherein things like thremometers and orogastric tubes may be placed. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

You are not alone!

I have been fortunate enough to be only incidentally exposed to nursing theories, and that was enough for me! Check out Jef Raskin's artilce "Humbug: Nusing Theory" for a comprehensive criticism of nursing theories in general and Martha Roger's "Science of Unitary Human Beings" in particular.

Sometimes I think this is the stuff they should be teaching at the high school level since they are the ones who are still trying to "find themselves". :rotfl:

We on the other hand have securely found ourselves or are on the other end of the spectrum of life and don't want to be found anymore!

in total agreement here. in almost every class i've taken in grad school, i've been asked to state "my theory' of nursing. why do i have to have a theory? i find it very difficult to interpret what these people have to say. i found orem to be the most painful: that's who my adn program was based on. i remember walking into school the first day, and this teacher is babbling about self care deficits. i was 18, so i had no clue. i was thinking, when are we going to learn how to be nurses?

this past semester i had a group project to develop a curriculum. a pretend school, with all it's course requirements. the absolute worst part of it was the mission, vision, theory and framework. it was all so abstract to me. i could have summed it up in one sentence to teach students to be the best nurses they could be!!
