Nursing Specialties

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I'm curious as to what nursing specialties pre-nursing students are most interested in, especially those who haven't done any hospital or medical work at all. I haven't done any sort of anything related to the medical field, so I'm not sure if my interests will change as I gain experience, but as of right now I'd really love to work in a delivery room or NICU. It'd be really interesting if y'all would say what your "dream job" is right now, so after we all get through clinicals in different fields we could see if and how everyone changes.

As a male who is pretty afraid of the whole poo experience (havent had to face it yet... just got accepted to a program) I would say my dream dept would be to work in the NICU.

I think I can handle the baby sadness pretty well and it would be alot easier to handle the poo accidents from a baby than if I was working with adults. I hope that someday I could really make a mom's day by developing a picture of her baby that she hasnt been able to see yet and assure her I am doing everything I can for her baby.

Long term I would hope to become a CRNA since I love the idea of surgery and I want to help my parents have a nice retirement. This is another reason why I would want to work in the NICU since I believe it fulfills the requirement for CRNA school.

At one point I wanted to work in Labor and Delivery and I still know I would love it but I want to start out in Med-Surg for at least 2 years.

I want to oncology or infectious diseases or maybe pediatrics. As for what department I have no clue. I also want to be a CNS or a nurse educator. I just want to keep my options open. It is good to start out in med-surg for at least a year though, I read its the basis for all specialties.

I'm not exactly your target audience since I have been a CNA since 2005 and prior to that I was in an LPN program(I was in highschool & missed 1 too many days : ( However, i must share that I recently became absolutely smitten with the idea of becoming a CRNA. I dont think I'll change my mind, but only time will tell!

With having no clinical experience I know this might change but right now:

I REALLY want L&D. I have hopes of eventually becoming a CNM

If L&D wouldn't work out for some reason I could see myself doing NICU or ER/trauma maybe.

I'm 99.9% certain that (at this point) I could never see myself working Peds or ICU.

L&D or pediatrics eventually. I would like at least a year or two of med-surg.

I have zero experience in the medical field, but I am done with prereq's and I will hopefully receive my official acceptance letter in a couple months for Fall.

That said, I have put a lot of thinking into specialty, and I know I can't do peds or NICU...and especially not pediatric oncology. Suffering children makes my eyes swell up, throat choked, and all the rest...not good. For now, I'm interested in adult ICU. I volunteered for a few months at a nearby hospital, and I was assigned to SICU/MICU, so it's the only unit so far that I've been exposed to--so maybe it's a biased opinion.

Specializes in CTICU/CVICU.

I worked at a hospital as a unit secretary on the trauma floor of an inner-city that was Level 1 for Trauma. I did that about 5 years ago. So, I have a bit of experience.

However, I am plugging through pre-reqs and will be entering nursing school this fall. I am interested in ICU/Trauma/ER as well as Neuro. I'm also interested in peds. So, a neuro ICU floor at a children's hospital would be perfect for me! :)

That's the good thing about nursing..the possibilities are endless!

I'm hoping to start out at a clinic in OB/GYN, and later go back for my RN and once my kids are older I'd like to get into L&D. I don't want to work in a hospital right away because I'm sure I'd be working the funky hours, and with three small kids and a hubby that works out of town most of the time, it just wouldn't work. I need something closer to 9-5 M-F!

My dream is to work in NICU...possibly an area of pediatrics... but as the OP said, it could change after I finish school (even though I don't think it will). :)

......work in the NICU since I believe it fulfills the requirement for CRNA school.

That is not correct.
