Nursing Specialties

Published

I'm curious as to what nursing specialties pre-nursing students are most interested in, especially those who haven't done any hospital or medical work at all. I haven't done any sort of anything related to the medical field, so I'm not sure if my interests will change as I gain experience, but as of right now I'd really love to work in a delivery room or NICU. It'd be really interesting if y'all would say what your "dream job" is right now, so after we all get through clinicals in different fields we could see if and how everyone changes.

That is not correct.

Concur... :D nope! The "usual" acute care floors prior to anesthesia school are CVICU and with some luck SICU

OP, post a poll with the different specialties. I'm looking to either CCRN or CRNA

Specializes in ICU.

Well I'm pretty certain I couldn't handle NICU or pediatrics. I just don't know how I would/will handle death in those so young and see the grieving parents. God bless you who can, you must be so strong!

I have a pretty open mind right now, but I do think that eventually I would like to go into an APN role. At this point I would like to think I can call myself a CRNA 7-10 years from now, but only time will tell.

I have taken my experience as a vet tech and used to give me an idea of what I like doing. That is what actually led me to investigate CRNA since my favorite role as a vet tech was sx where I took care of the IV set up, induction, intubation, monitoring and post op recovery of the animal. Of course, there will be huge differences between animal care and human care, but I would like to think it gives me a bit of the picture.

My dream would be either L&D, NICU, Peds, or Oncology. Further into school I'll narrow it down more. These all interest me though.

I am defininitely stilll set on LTC/Geriatrics. I don't have any other medical experience other than volunteer work at a Nursing/Rehab Center now but I love it and the plan is to pursue that w/home health care. There's still SOOO much I have yet to experience so anything can change and now that i have the spring/summer off, I additionally plan to volunteer at the local ER , NICU or another area they may need/allow me to get more exposure...but I love/respect/adore the aging generation and want to keep my focus there as of now...

WOW! It sounds like alot of you are going for NICU/L&D/Peds. I never realized how popular those were. It will be interesting to see what actually happens and where we all end up.

I am pretty interested in L&D. I would really like to become a CNM but who knows where I will end up.

I have also been looking into the possibility of becoming a school nurse.

I like ER/ICU/med-surg... I am terrified of dealing with little babies. :( I don't know how I would handle it, but I figure in one form or another we would all have to meet with that? Idk. :/ Well Idk once I start school maybe it will all change!

My dream job would be in the NICU....do they let newbies in? I plan on working my way up to a CRNA someday. I'm halfway through my prereqs so there's still time to change my mind!

I have hospital exp. I am a surgical tech, so my end plan is to work in the OR. That being said, I also want to work as a travling nurse, so I hope to work in med-surg for the experience.

I would love to work in the Emergency Department, then my ultimate goal would be a Flight Nurse. Something about Helicopters mixed with nursing fascinates me! I think it'll be exciting. Who knows what we'll end up liking though, I think once you get there the probability to change your mind is high. I could hate the ER for all I know.

Good luck to you all!
