Nursing School Jitters?

Published

I start Nursing School Janurary 14th @ 8am. My schedule is 8am-5pm M-F until we start clinicals which are 7:30am-3pm. 9 hour school days are LONG! whew. I'm having such jitters, wow. I'm very very excited too all at once. My mind is swirling with all the thought of school, nerves, praying I'm smart enough when it comes down to the core. I have 3 children, a husband and 3 dogs, can I juggle everything? laundry, dinners, cleaning house? Is anyone else having such nursing school jitters? I've worked so hard for this, now I'm here and now I'm stressed..

I hear you, IndyMitchell...my youngest is also 14. He's been riding the bus since 1st grade, however, getting up and out of the house is always awful! Even today it's a scramble to get out of the house with lunch and backpack intact! My timing in starting nursing school is partly due to this and now I feel my son can do/should do it on his own - plenty other kids (younger, too) in our small neighborhood community can. I guess this will be proven when I leave the house at 6:15am on my cinical day (the bus comes at 8:30) of the three days that I attend school. I think its maybe ME - when I'm not around he is pretty self sufficient. When he gets on the bus or to school, he'll text messege me so it reassures me that he's okay and didn't miss the bus. BTW - love text messeging...doesn't disrupt during class and really helps me keep in touch with my kids during the day. Next Fall won't be much of a problem as my kids will be in the same high school. Anyway, I wish you the best!

Oh, I'm right there with you! I work full-time and have a husband, a daughter and a dog and yes, I worry about how I will juggle it all, but I know where there is a will, there is a way and I will figure out what works best for me!!!

As far as cleaning, we have talked about having someone come in and do the basics...vacuum, dusting, mopping. Everything else will be kept up with as far as picking up and laundry and dishes. Mostly will be my husbands duty. Not sure if he realizes that yet, but he will soon enough...:lol2:

Best of luck figuring it all out!!! I have orientation on January 7 and then we begin on January 23. I'll be freaking out right along with you until then!

I am right there with you, I keep reminding myself daily that hundreds of people become nurses every year, you have to take it one day at a time.

I don't have as much class as everyone else either! I haven't picked my schedule yet because we don't get to until December, but I have already picked mine out and it isn't NEAR as much as everyone else has and I am in an accelerated program...:uhoh3:

Here is my tentative schedule:

M-OFF

T-Clinicals (basically all day)

W-9am-3pm

Th-9am-11:30am

F-OFF

Sat-OFF

Sun-OFF

yes that is nearly exactly like mine. I guess we will be doing a lot of independent studying!

I am paying out of pocket for my classes, books, everything. I was getting tuition reimbursement, but not anymore, so I decided I don't want loans to pay off after school, so I will just pay it as I go. I am done with pre-req's, so I have the Nursing classes to pay for only.

My schedule is as follows (from Jan-May)

Monday: 4:30PM - 9:50PM Clinicals

Wednesday: 4:30PM - 5:20 PM Test

Wednesday: 5:30 PM - 8:20 PM Lecture

Thursday: 4:30 PM - 6:50 PM Lab

I am paying out of pocket too, however, I live in California, where school is very reasonable (state and community colleges) CC is only 20. a credit, I just registered for my whole first semester to the tune of $240.00 total! love California! The thing that will kill me are the books, I have started to buy already.

I don't know if any of you are Barnes and noble club memembers but I have bought a couple text books through them with my memebership card, I saved quite a bit of money! if you know the ISBN of the books you need you should check out BN.com

This semester I think I am ok as far as the kids go, all 3 of mine are in the same school. I have a 10 yr old and two 8 yr olds. my 10 yr old starts middle school next year and will make things a little trickier. I will have to do before school care at their school, it will just be getting them up early that I feel guilty about, (my clinicals are far away). Tuesdays I will have my husband home only sometimes, he travels for work and is often out of town. I have my inlaws close by and they have offered to help, however they don't always come through. I know things will work out, it's just the stress of trying to make it all happen.

Wow, $20 a credit hour!!! That is awesome!!! Ours is just under $80 without all the extra fees. Plus the cost of books. Tuition should be just under $600 with all the fees and books are going to be about $600 for the required and for all of them, $1000 or so. I'll have to check out barnes & nobles as well.

As far as my house...I'm not so worried about it either. I figured 16 weeks of class, then a break for me to catch up and then go back to class and let it go again. I can only do so much and I can't just do it because my husband won't...he needs to know that I seriously cannot do it, so maybe he'll pick up the slack.

I think more of a concern is what will my 2 year old daughter be eating for dinner??? :lol2: Kidding...he will take very good care of her, I know that and that is my #1 concern!

I worked really hard to get into the ADN program because of the finiancial aspect.

My husband is a huge help as well, however he is usually gone during the week. The food thing will be an issue here too I 'll try and prepare ahead but realisticly, there will be a lot of pasta and pb&J.

Oh yes I am actually really happy we are starting spring semester, we will work really hard for 16 weeks, but will be so nice to get the summer off to recharge!! then two full semester another summer off and a last push, I am hoping it will help us elivate burn out.

Hey Catzy5 - what is the name of your college? Where is it located? I've been cruising prospective collegesfor my daughter who wil graduate high school in two years. Frankly, $27K per year is just ridiculous! I always figured California to be costly. Go figure...

All of California's community colleges have the same cost $20.00 a credit. You have to be a resident here not sure what the out of state cost would be. I our universities (state) are also very reasonable, but I am not sure the cost.

California's cost of living can be expensive, however there are plenty of areas that are reasonable, like any state we have some benifits and some expenses.

So, can you guys tell me what types of things you have to get before you start the program? I don't find out until December 17-18 when we have our all day orientation. Do you have to get scrubs or do you have school uniforms? What supplies do you have to get? I am just curious so I can make a list of things I might need and budget for all of it!

Take a peek at our local thread...https://allnurses.com/forums/f145/we-got-into-clc-nursing-program-now-what-258427.html. We've had a lot of input from each other as well as current nursing students. Right now we're all set with our immunizations, CPR, shoes and rolling backpack. The rest will have to wait until orientation...scrubs, actual required texts from the list of $800+ worth...and such. Check it out!

Well it looks like I am on the right track then!

I wish there were more people from my school that start the same time as me. I have only found one other person!

Thanks a lot!
