Hi Everyone,
I have been admitted to Gwinnett Tech and will begin taking nursing prerequisites in the Fall. I am 57 years old (really) and recently lost my job in another field due to downsizing. I will have to take Math 98 and 99, and am not that great in the subject. However, I am determined to do my absolute best! I am concerned about age discrimination in being admitted to nursing school, and later, when I seek employment. I understand admission to the nursing program is very competitive. What if I don't get in? Do other Atlanta area nursing schools accept Gwinnett Tech's prerequisites?
Thanks so much!

Hi,
I am also non-traditional second-career student, so I think you are never too old to try something new. I don't know about nursing schools in GA, but you might try reposting this in the Ga. Nursing section (under region tab). Some schools are kind of picky about where you take your pre-reqs and all have different requirements. Best of luck to you.

I am a 54 year old Male nursing student in CA, I am just completing the EMT program this summer. I would like to be an ED nurse. I have all of my classes done through my bachelors, except Micro, which I am enrolled in for the Fall. I survived a brain stem stroke 5 years ago and have recovered to a point where I am doing very well in school. I don't think age matters except that I am a better student now, after all it is only a number right? I am a CNA, and soon to be an EMT in 3 more weeks and hope to be in a ADN program in the fall of 2012, then on to my BSN. It is never too late to be what you could have been. Just don't give up. Persistence pays, follow your heart, you can make it happen.

I don't think you will need to worry about age discrimination. Generally diversity is valued by the schools. If nursing is your passion and something you've always wanted to do then I think it is great that you are pursing your dreams and wouldn't let age stop you. However, you don't say why you want to be a nurse other than you were laid off from your previous job. If you are going into nursing hoping it will mean a guaranteed job you might want to check out the graduate nurse forums. The economy has hit nursing just like other professions. I'm not sure what the Atlanta job market is like right now, but when I graduated school it took a couple of my classmates 6-8 months to find jobs in the Atlanta area and that was with a BSN. ADNs generally are having a harder time. This isn't to say there aren't any jobs, but you will want to be making connections during school to help your chances of getting hired when you're done.

I don't think you'll have a problem with age discrimination. I remember hearing at the meeting about the nursing program the average age was somewhere in the 30's. While I'm a little younger than you, I am older than the "average", so you're not alone. :-)
To answer your other question, I think Athens Tech's pre-reqs are very close to GTC's. You can check their site online; they're listed there.
Maybe I'll see you at GTC. I'm starting my pre-reqs this fall, too!

I am 54 years old, I completed my LPN portion of my ladder program (LPN to RN ). I am starting my RN portion this fall. I had several people tell me that no one going want to hire a 50 something entry level RN. Is this true, does anyone know anyone who completed nursing school in there 50s and found a job?

I can't speak to age discrimination when looking for a job (as I'm still a student myself!) but most schools don't look at age in any way. I know mine only looks at the 4 required pre-req's and the entrance exam for admission. Other than that, they don't care how old you are. I think it's awesome that you're going for nursing and I wish you the very best of luck!

I am in my last semester and I am 60. I have been offered a job in a local hospital. I have, however, been volunteering in that hospital since I started school and got to know many people. They got to know me and see I had a good work ethic, and when they found out I was a student, the job offer came to me. You want a job?; study hard, network, prove yourself to stand above the crowd. Good luck to you
