Hello,
I am a sophomore at my nursing school and when I first began it was required for nursing students to pass the class with a 75% or higher on their exams and have an overall score of a 75% or higher to pass the class (this included hw as well). Well now out of nowhere they have decided to change that rule and starting next fall you will need to pass your classes with an 80% or higher.
What is everyone else's minimum to pass their nursing classes at their nursing school?
Ours is 80% and has been the entire time.
Oh and I'd like to add, that the 80% is almost entirely made up of exam grades, we don't have graded homework. We have quizzes and occasionally case studies that make up a very small portion of our total grade, but it is mostly made up of exam grades.
At my school you need a 75% to pass nursing courses and you have to average 75% on exams before any additional papers/assignments are factored in. I'm not sure what the criteria is for the rest of the college. Another nursing program in my area requires 90% to pass! I thought that was steep!
Thanks everyone. After re-reading the e-mail that was sent to the students, it appears that we will not be grandfathered into the old grading system. To me it seems unfair because there are going to be a lot of students that are unable to achieve an 80% or higher in these classes.
As for the NCLEX rate its 96% at my school, but out of 70 people that start the program only 30 graduate. Now with this change, it will be interesting to see how many graduate.
ours is 80% too and like another poster said, you can't round up- so if you have a 79.9 you are screwed. An A is 92 and up too, so if you get a 91.9 its a B. Also, you have to get the 80 in your lecture separate without adding in your lab or clinical grade for that class. So if you have a 75 in lecture but your overall grade with clinical would be an 82 or something, you don't pass because you have to have the solid 80 without that factoring in.
Ours was a 73. I think my school had a 96% chance pass rate the first time on the NCLEX. 12/40 failed going into the last semester, but everyone made it after that to graduation.
I wanted to add that 75 to 80% is a big jump. If I were you I would worry about myself and make sure to study hard so you make it! Good luck!

Good luck!
I don't see what is so unfair about this. It would be unfair if this change was occurring in the middle of a semester, but the administration is letting you know a bout a change starting next semester. If you are studying and know the content, an 80% should be totally doable. Generally changes like this happen for a reason. The school must feel that 80% in their program makes for the better minimally prepared nurse. Also, your handbook probably states that changes can be made at any time in the program.
My program requires a 76% on exams to pass before any papers or non proctored stuff is included in the grade. I wouldn't say that the program is particularly any more rigorous than other schools and should probably have a higher pass %, but im sure the students who ride the barely passing line don't feel that way. I currently have an A in my courses and wouldn't need to worry if it changed. That totally probably sounded arrogant or whatever, but its not meant that way.
