why nursing is a mess. three simple facts

Published

If you are expecting an elaborate article, you won't get it here.

1. cost too much to transfer license from another state. About 220 bucks just for me to transfer my RN license since I am moving to another state. Lame. it's not like ive performed any crimes in the past few months.

2. Phd in nursing- LOL? Who would get a phd in nursing? it is not like it is as an elaborate field as chemistry, biology, or psychology. WHAT A JOKE. This is pretty much just a bullbeat way to try to OVERLEGITIMIZE the nursing profession. What are you performing double blind controlled studies on.... HOW TO GIVE A BEDBATH OR BREAK THE SEAL ON THE ASPIRIN TABLET???? Keep it simple folks.

3. Overcomplication- nurses are probably the worst at over complicating things. I remember back in undergraduate, we were taught those elaborate care plans. Do you know what care plans are? GARBAGE. You never use them and nobody cares about them. Unless you are one of those old hags with a Phd IN NURSING..... You know what else is dumb. NURSING DIAGNOSES. you know what those are? cheap copies of medical diagnoses, aka nurses trying to legitimize themselves with medicine. I remember having to come up with these stupid things. IMPAIRED NUTRITION SECONDARY TO DIFFICULTY SWALLOWING. ARE YOU KIDDING ME, NO CRAP, IF YOU CANT SWALLOW YOU CANT EAT. NO CRAP ROFL. I also remember the nursing skills manual. 10 pages on HOW TO FOLD A FREAKING WASHCLOTH AND MAKE A BED. Go home overcomplicators, go home.

I also remember having to learn indepth about diagnoses such as cardiac tamponade. WHENS THE LAST TIME YOU PAGED THE DOCTOR AT 3 AM "Hey I think this patient is in cardiac tamponade, you know when they stick the tampon in lemonaide???" ARE YOU KIDDING ME... NEVER.

I could go on and on about point 3.

Overcomplication is a simple way to try to self-legitimize. Something the PHD level nurses are professionals at. Good professionals simplify as much as they can, not do this garbage.

I read nursing journals in school. Never will again. I'll stick to epocrates and uptodate. Where they leave out the fluff and to straight to the point. If we followed all of the stuff they put in those nursing journals, I'd admit like 1/2 of a patient per night because I'd be questioning him about his deep spiritual needs and asking him about his childhood problems all evening. I shall pass.

I don't hate nurses BTW, am just not a fan of the ridiculous amount of theory which very little is useful to practice. Again, all of this theory stuff is why a lot of fnp grads have trouble finding jobs. The MD looks at his resume and sees theory theory theory and goes ROFLMAO.

I don't read nursing journals too much anymore, either. No matter what condition they talk about, they usually add something like "The nurse will perform a careful assessment and document all findings." Really?

Then there's always some personal story about how a nurse spent extra time with a patient or else blew off a patient's concerns. The moral of the story is how you should take time to listen carefully to your patients. No kidding! And by the way, if you don't have your BSN yet, your patients are dropping like flies. Nowadays, I take a cursory glance at the journals that show up for free.

Seems we've gone from being subservient handmaids to having a bloated bureaucracy all our own. We've come a long way, baby! I love venting threads. In this day of political correctness, how much opportunity do we get to vent? No matter what someone says, it's always true for that person at that time. After 30+ years in this business, I can usually find what to relate to. Thanks for a fun thread!

yeah that article about that nursing student was pretty funny. man we would have gotten failed if we played on our phone in clinical in RN school. I got written up for basically pooping longer than 15 minutes once. They were hard on me since I was a male. yes a male. somebody called me a chick in this thread. thanks for not looking at my profile, lol jk. plus most females capitalize their sentences properly. I would but shift is too far away on this keyboard.

I’m thinking that OP’s initial post isn’t so much a vent post as it is a deliberate

attempt to create drama. This quote certainly suggests as much.

A non partially offensive post would not have 40 responses. Success. :) works huh

By the way, considering that OP labels individuals with a PhD in Nursing “old hags” and this is even after the post has been edited by staff, I can imagine that the “unfettered” version was quite a gem

AT 3 AM "Hey I think this patient is in cardiac tamponade, you know when

What on earth are you talking about?!? Tamponade, tampons and lemonade??

I have on several occasions paged a physician when a patient showed signs/symptoms of a cardiac tamponade. I completely understand the rationale for teaching nursing students to recognize the signs and symptoms for this truly emergent condition. I don’t understand why you don’t? Just because you haven’t seen it doesn’t mean that other nurses haven’t or won’t.

There are far better things to conduct research on and that are well within the realm

of nursing rather than the silly examples you give. If you can’t come up with better

topics then either a) you don’t have a lot of nursing experience or

b) you deliberately picked inane topics in order to try to mock and ridicule the nursing profession.

They were hard on me since I was a male.

Is the fact that you think that your teachers were harder on you simply because you’re a male part of the reason for the contempt you’ve voiced towards older nurses/PhDs?

You know, the things you’ve listed aren’t actually facts. They are your opinion. Just like my response to you is my opinion.

I'm an egghead nurse. I'm a nerd and love information. Being a "book smart" nurse and being really really good at your job are not mutually exclusive.

I work at a community health clinic for underprivileged, underinsured and uninsured populations. One of the first things I do when I'm working with a student doing their community health rotation is I make them write me a (short) essay on Maslow and how it pertains to our patient population.

If that makes me useless as a nurse because I want students to actually consider and apply theory, so be it.

Good luck in life and in your interpersonal relationships. You have some maturing to do. You emanate disrespect in your posts, I'm sure that's what gets you into hot water in life, not your gender.

Perhaps they were harder on you because of your attitude, not your gender.

The OP is a Critical care NP

That scares the crap out of me. Do NP programs not require any bedside critical care experience?

Apparently the OP is a critical care NP who disparages education and finds humor in phrases like, "cardiac tamponade, you know, like the tampon in the lemonade."

I can't quite put my finger on it but there's something disingenuous and contrived about the OP's posts... and it's not the venting. Just for kicks, I went and read The Angry Pharmacist for the first time in awhile... they are vile, profane vents... from someone who is clearly a well-educated professional who's fed up with... well, the same feces that so many of us ED nurses are. But through his rants, his education and professionalism are manifested.

There's just something missing in the OP's rant... maybe it's something simple like "cardiac tamponade and tampon in lemonade" don't even rhyme... or the idea that a critical-care NP can't envision ever calling a doc to say a patient's got a tamponade, or maybe it's the contrast between the OP's attitude toward nursing education and watching my friend go through the critical-care NP program at UCSF... I'm just not sure.

This, I'll say: In my opinion, there is far too much worthless fluff in nursing education and far too little hardcore math and science... and to that extent, I can probably find some common ground with the OP... but again, there's something in the OP's posts that read as... well, what I said... disingenuous and contrived...

It's almost like when I read the "OMG, there's a new virus that's going to blow up your computer in your face" or "Obama just instituted martial law and is presently landing Russian troops in San Diego to control the US population and file them into FEMA death camps." I can't quite put my finger on it but every single one of these posts are so blatantly absurd... and it's their language that exposes them, not their (il)logic. Same thing here.

I don't know... but it's been kind of entertaining to watch.. which, I suppose, was the intent of the OP... to release a bunch of bees into our collective bonnets and then enjoy the show.

That scares the crap out of me. Do NP programs not require any bedside critical care experience?

This is news to you? Most NPs program barely have any requirements aside from your RN and maybe the GRE. A day out of nursing school most programs will accept you as long as you have your bachelors.

Actually, Some chick in one of my undergrad classes pulled up a picture of the tampon in lemonade. It was some sort of picmonic I guess. Give me a few hours and I'll write a double blind peer reviewed 15 page article over the benefit of picmonics also. Let me pull out my monocle.

I am also glad somebody finally realized I don't put a bunch of time into my posts. I am glad you guys do. Keep it coming lol.
