We had this huge discussion at work today, and i thought i'd get your opinions.
The statement was this: "We have to many people becoming nurses for the money. Its not like it used to be, where a nurse chose to be a nurse because they liked helping people. Its all about the money,."
We were talking about the increased patient complaints, and an older nurse stated the above and thats the reason for increased patient complaints.
So, what do you think.
I totally agree with you, though. It's not the teachers at all. I've really liked my kids' teachers. They are frustrated as well. Every year state and federal regulations keep piling on more and more crap. They are overwhelmed, and it shows. Plus, societal instability is more common these days that they have to contend with. So, I think they're doing their best.
I work to live, not live to work...
This was always my favorite quote at my former job, where everyone was ALWAYS completely stressed out. I was the only one with kids, and I came in at 9, left at 5, because my kids and my marriage are what I live for, not a multi-billion dollar corporation who doesn't even know who I am. All of my poor friends who worked ridiculous hours are now looking for jobs, because the office is closing on 9/30. I chose to pursue nursing because I want what I do to be meaningful, but I will never, ever be defined by a job.
There seems to be a lot of finger pointing in this thread at who is or isn't the better person. Some people see it as you're a better person for going into nursing because it's your "calling" or you care about people. Others don't want to be labeled a bad nurse just because they went into nursing to make good money due to their financial situations (i.e. raising children, many bills to pay and now possibly a school loan, likes to spend money and lives beyond their means). Everyone is in this profession for different reasons. Regardless of what it is, hopefully that doesn't interfere with the quality of care they give to their patients... and hopefully, it also doesn't take away from the role and responsibilities you have at home. Nursing is my vocation and it is part of my life, but it's not my entire life. Those who have purely entered nursing for "just the money" probably will find themselves burned out one day and will ultimately leave... or be one of those complaining nurses we always hear about and maybe even work with. Or perhaps they will come to like what they do and money will be only part of their reasons for staying a nurse. I also believe if someone was in it for just the money, they would've already figured out that it's something they wouldn't want to do while they were in nursing school. That alone was enough for some of my former classmates to drop out and pursue some other career path.
I must be sick...I have had patients I wanted to take home with me!!! Seriously! Bringing home another cat that I found is one thing, but geeze, what would my family say if I brought home a patient?? I am proud of the restraint I have shown so far.But seriously Mike, what an awesome way to express yourself.:yelclap: So eloquent!
Now that you mention it, there was one I would have taken home with me. But I live with my Dad--he would have been hitting on her while I was at work.
Thanks.
You know, I am going to say something here that no one else has said, I don't think...
I really enjoy nursing because I feel it's the type of job for me. I like being busy at work (I couldn't stand to sit at a desk all day!) and I like being active, and working with my hands and my brain. Also, it is exciting sometimes, and every shift is different. It is unpredictable, I never truly know what is going to happen from one minute to the next. Very cool.
While I wouldn't say I went in it for the money either, I sure wouldn't do it if for minimum wage. My family comes first, and us having a roof over our heads and food on the table is a must. If I am less of a nurse for feeling like that's a priority, that's ridiculous!!
Oh, and I consider one of the fringe benefits of my job the nice, 'caring' moments I can have with my patients sometimes. Very nice, but not the primary reason I went into nursing.

I've always wished I could homeschool my children. I live in a decent area, with decent schools but I believe their curriculum contains alot of holes. It must be very rewarding to do that for your children.
