Nurses Who Shouldn't be Nurses

Nurses General Nursing

We had this huge discussion at work today, and i thought i'd get your opinions.

The statement was this: "We have to many people becoming nurses for the money. Its not like it used to be, where a nurse chose to be a nurse because they liked helping people. Its all about the money,."

We were talking about the increased patient complaints, and an older nurse stated the above and thats the reason for increased patient complaints.

So, what do you think.

Exactly. I've had an uncountable number of experiences just like the one you described. So frustrating.

Listen to you people pass judgement on others. oh but you yourself has never made a mistake. hmmmm, I wonder. Have you people that are trying to eat others alive at work tried to maybe assist in some way or mention the incident in a nice way to your co-worker.? No, I bet,you are always the ones pointing the finger making everyone elses life miserble at work. Instead of this petty back and forth with other nurses;heres a clue (HELP). Oh, thats not possible for you saints, who only joined nursing because you care about people. This is the reason nursing is still not considered a profession among some people. Do you hear physicians belittle there peers. :angryfire

I think if you read carefully, we were talking about people who repeatedly (notice the emphasis) make sloppy errors, and don't really seem to care. You are very wrong - of course I have made mistakes, no, I don't EAT anybody alive. I treat others at work the way I would like to be treated. You can only tell someone something nicely about 10 times before you get sick of their carelessness. I work with only a couple of people who are like this, thank goodness. Making honest mistakes and being repeatedly careless are 2 different things.

 Have you made errors?

We are here to vent and exchange ideas. We don't come here to pass judgement on others. We've all made mistakes, some small, some serious.

I've made errors, ranging from minor (late w/a med when on the floor) to serious (too much dexamethosone for a brain-stem injury. Luckily, neither patient was harmed in the long run. You fall apart later, but you keep it together because you are a professional. And yes, the guilt eats at you.

Being chastised by fellow co-workers is the definition of counterproductive.

"Passing judgement on co-workers" is not this thread. The Thread: Nurses Who Shouldn't be Nurses refers to those who are not competent, compassionate or skilled enough to work with the public. In turn, they may pose a threat to those who work with these nurses.

As for the 'saintly' title, I will be the first to admit I'm not a saint, angel or do-gooder. I just want to do my job with competence, respect from coworkers, and knowing at the end of the day that I've done some good.

In a perfect nursing world we would treat each other with the same kindness we would like to be treated. This board has helped me thru many struggles when it wasn't the easiest path to chose.

And yes, I hear physicians belittle their peers all the time. The difference is litigation for them, the institution and for the nurses if the criticism becomes public knowledge.
