Nurses Who Can't Add Cost Lives.

Just thought I'd share this with you all.

Nurses Who Can't Add Cost Lives.

No, I clearly remember typing "utilise." However, you can spell it either way.

Yeah, both are correct. Utilise is British English and Utilize is American English.

"i conqure with your statement, but how about nursing being streatched way to thin to apease "

Talk about misspellings......took me forever to figure this one out. How on earth do nursing students get by without a reasonable ability to communicate? Imagine trying to follow a nursing note written in this manner....

Well, OK, I'll bite. But this thread is not going to be as entertaining as the gum chewing thread.

I concur, skill in math and spelling are important to have as a nurse.

Well, I agree that basic math skills are necessary... but I doubt that med errors (life-threatening or otherwise) are typically caused by not having math skills. They're more likely to be a result of the nurse being highly rushed or stressed. And that's just at the level of the individual nurse... of course there are system factors that are relevant.

Well perhaps you might have mentioned so in the original post? The OP as it stands sounds accusatory yet offers no solutions.

to me the op's intent was quite obvious:

be careful with your math/dosage calculations...

whatever it takes to get it right.

common sense.

Typos are not necessarily indicative of a bad speller.

This is my latest rant: cheaters! Someone who cheats his/her way into/through nursing school will cost lives! I'm a pre-nursing major and disgusted with some classmates in A&P who were cheating on a quiz last week. There were also cheaters in my Chem class. (just posted a thread about this in the students section)

which is why it seems like a pointless thread, because it is so obvious and common sense

good point.:)

never hurts to be reminded, however.

Don't agree - nurses who can't add use calculators ...... now nurses who can't remember or use drug calculation formula's now that's a different matter :)

This thread has been reopened. I would like to remind members of AN.com to please keep on the topic of the thread, which would be discussing numeracy skills of nurses and refrain from flaming and personal attacks.

Thank you!

Yes..I'm in agreement too..in school, it used to drive me crazy when students would actually brag that they sucked at math(usually women)and thats why the dosage class was too hard. Dosage is pretty much 5th grade math and IMO, if you can't do elementary school math, I don't need you taking care of me..compassion and warm fuzzy feelings only go so far.;)

This is always my biggest fear. It isn't all about compassion and caring. I can get that from my mother. How about making sure you check, recheck, and triple check your doses and make sure that you check with someone else.

ESPECIALLY WITH KIDS.

And I also don't like it when people say they are "not good" at math.

Get good at it. These are people's lives and you'd better know what you are doing.

I don't like to hear it. All excuses to me. Can't do it? Don't be a nurse.
