Just thought I'd share this with you all.

How about elaborating a bit?

Could you be a little more specific?

Specializes in M/S, MICU, CVICU, SICU, ER, Trauma, NICU.

Are you talking about not being mathematically savvy?

I am in agreement.

Specializes in Clinicals in Med-Surg., OB, CCU, ICU.

Nurses who can't add cost lives? What about nurses who do not know how to do a full assessment? What about a nurse who neglects to advise the next shift about unusual bleeding? What about a nurse who doesn't realize a low RBC count needs addressed for a new admit on a patient who is having angina.....?????:uhoh3:

I sure am. I read it in a nursing math calculations book.

This is a nonsense thread.

They can also cost lived, but for this post I thought I'd share that quote I recently read.

This is a nonsense thread.

A nonsense thread? I'm sharing a quote that I have never forgotten that I read in a math calculations book. Hopefully students or nurses who also read this thread won't forget it too, therefore saving someones life.

Hopefully if will help nurses become more confident with their math skills by either asking for a second opinion or revising their math education so I don't think its a nonsense thread.

Yes..I'm in agreement too..in school, it used to drive me crazy when students would actually brag that they sucked at math(usually women)and thats why the dosage class was too hard. Dosage is pretty much 5th grade math and IMO, if you can't do elementary school math, I don't need you taking care of me..compassion and warm fuzzy feelings only go so far.;)

i conqure with your statement, but how about nursing being streatched way to thin to apease administrations bottom line so at the end of the fisical yr the hospital profit has grown a mere 5% so they can get their bonuses and administrative pay raises. meanwhile back on the floor patient ratios are 9:1 and 3-4:1 in units with reductions in supportive staff, now that cost lives too.
