Nurses smoking weed?

Nurses General Nursing

Hey nurses,

In honor of "420" tomorrow... As a health-care professional, what are your thoughts on smoking weed? Any nurses out there that smoke a joint here and there?

Cheers.

I don't but I just went to a Dave Gilmour concert in NYC (Pink Floyd) and MAN did it smell wonderful in there. I was a bit jealous that I couldn't.

Deep breaths .. always good advice ;)

What biter cobs go for when they get the munchies.

My college blueprint was a combination of "fear & loathing in las vegas", the fabulous furry freak brothers & the dead. But that was a long time ago.

Maybe the original post was about related to work, but the thread is a moving beast and as such morphed. Obviously no one needs to be under the influence at work. They will have to decide once it's legal federally how to test nurses. The current method won't fly. It can be in your system for 30 days and one wouldn't be "under the influence" some people find it fun. More attributed to one's brain chemistry, I believe. Of course no one should jeopardize their job, but alcohol is legal and we all know how not to be intoxicated at work, so the discussion should start about how those nurses might want to indulge and how long to be free of that before clocking in.

I read about several entities developing cannabis breathalyzers. They detect use within a 2 hour time frame I believe: THC Breathalyzer - Cannabix Technologies Inc.

And this $7 saliva test SalivaConfirm - 5 Panel (Instant Oral Cube Drug Test Kit with 5 Drugs)

I believe the saliva test can detect up to 12 hours of recent use. Maybe employers will start to use these tests instead of the urinalysis & blood draw (30+ day detection) once marijuana's federally legal.

I however do agree with the other posters. I won't risk my license & job for it.

It's morphing because you are morphing it.

There is a drinking thread active right now as well. It is actually way less coherent and respectful than this thread has been.

If it were legal and not subject to DoA screens, I might because I did enjoy it in my distant past.

On the other hand, I do recall that it muddled my thinking and I find that age is doing that enough that I don't want to make it any worse so I would probably generally steer clear except on rare, celebratory occasions just as I do with alcohol.

It's all hypothetical because under the current legal structure, it could cost me both my present job and my license so no way, no how.

I would never risk my job or license for something so trivial.

The use of Marijuana may be trivial to you. However your right to use it .. should not be.

I spoke to my younger D today. She has a friend in her same major at college (they are seniors). He had received a great job offer in the energy sector. He knew that he would be drug screened (both of them and most of their peers were drug screened after receiving their internship offers last year). He likes weed a lot, apparently. He swore to D that he hasn't smoked in almost 4 months. He was drug tested a couple of weeks ago (included a hair follicle test), and just found out he tested positive for marijuana. His job offer was revoked. He has lost his offer of $125K STARTING SALARY. He was in shock, and even paid out of pocket for another test, sure that there was a mistake. His second test came back positive. He is very depressed. The chances of getting another offer in the industry during this hiring cycle is nil. And all because he didn't exercise the proper caution with regard to his future.

It's not true that only nursing is subject to drug testing and the stigma associated with MJ use. Right or wrong, fair or unfair, it is what it is. Use at your own peril.

Wow, that's too bad Horseshoe. But, he made the choice to partake.

Honestly, I'll have to say again I don't get the draw of weed. You are inhaling stinky smoke into your system for what? The "high" I experienced was nothing to write home about, so to speak. No biggie.

Now wine, that tastes lovely and doesn't stink up your clothes, hair, house, car, kids, etc.

And a margarita is pretty tasty as well.

Unless you are an alcoholic, I don't see how weed wins over alcohol in terms of "high" or flavor or negative side effects.

Smoke in your lungs is not good for you.

Just think how much some of you dislike the smell of cigs . . . for some of us, pot is worse.

It just ain't worth it to me.

Nope would never risk my job or reputation. I agree in medical marijuana for people with cancer chronic pain or the other type of conditions it has been found to help. I dont judge anyone for what they do on their own time. But would never risk my career. That is how I was raised!

Don't care what you ingest unless you drive a car or operate dangerous machinery impaired and harm others. Then I care alot. Honor that.
