You know how you have that one favorite pen that fits just right in your hand and writes so smoothly? You get very attached to it....and then, much to your dismay it seems to grow legs and disappears. Be prepared by stocking up so you'll always have a backup.

Specializes in Med nurse in med-surg., float, HH, and PDN.
This is my pen

There are many like it

But this one is mine

Yo! You a jarhead?

(We re-watched Jarhead last night, so this clicked in with me immediately!)

Pens are to nurses what cigarettes are to prison inmates. I've seen nurses get into arguments over allegations of "pen stealing" and it can be quite a show... but they're totally serious about DTMP (don't touch my pen)!

When I was a brand new Nurse on the floor, I asked a colleague to borrow a pen and was told, "don't you know you don't show up empty-handed to a knife fight?". Then we had a good chuckle about it, but I was still pen-less. From that point onward, I learned to always carry a bulk supply.

I once complimented a doctor on her pen-stealing abilities. I was only half kidding, and made darned sure she brought my pen back after the cysto.

I generally like to leave my pen inside my cubby when I empty my pockets before leaving each shift. Lately, I've come back 3 times and found my pens gone. Someone must think I'm leaving them an offering every morning. :/

Showing your age there! Blue for days, green for eves and red for nights!!

Can use just about any kind of pen and my son always buys me enough refills for my gel pen for Christmas. most of the charting where I work is on the computer so not a lot of writing to do.I do miss the old writing of nurses notes though,as computers like to shut down or get updated just when you have time for making the required entries for your shift

Specializes in Med-Surg, diabetes.

There were certain of our favorite Docs that would regularly bring us a bag of the pens they got from the drug reps! We nurses fought over the Viagra pens, and all the other various colors and shapes! They didn't last long, but were fun to use!! It doesn't take much to entertain us! Lol

Bic Atlantis black medium point retractable. Slim barrel, smooth ink, gel cushioned grip. My favorite plus a 4 color for coding my brains. They stay in my pocket and I rarely lose one. I keep a spare of both in my lunch bag in case I run out of ink. Best pen ever.

I carry many, including a red one, black one, blue one, multi color in case one of the others gets lost/stolen......and a sharpie. ALWAYS.

I need EVERY pen....I also keep back ups in my locker. I'm not proud.

Oh yes! I always need a sharpie.

I like Bic ink pens. I love the way the ink smells (I know, I know! Weird huh?)

Also for a stocking-stuffer last year I got a pretty "seven year pen" which is supposed to be able to write continuously for 7 years. Still works so far!

My wife bought me one of these for nurses week. It is black, has a skull on it and reads "NEED COFFEE" in white.

Cheers
