You know how you have that one favorite pen that fits just right in your hand and writes so smoothly? You get very attached to it....and then, much to your dismay it seems to grow legs and disappears. Be prepared by stocking up so you'll always have a backup.
Pens are to nurses what cigarettes are to prison inmates. I've seen nurses get into arguments over allegations of "pen stealing" and it can be quite a show... but they're totally serious about DTMP (don't touch my pen)!
When I was a brand new Nurse on the floor, I asked a colleague to borrow a pen and was told, "don't you know you don't show up empty-handed to a knife fight?". Then we had a good chuckle about it, but I was still pen-less. From that point onward, I learned to always carry a bulk supply.
Can use just about any kind of pen and my son always buys me enough refills for my gel pen for Christmas. most of the charting where I work is on the computer so not a lot of writing to do.I do miss the old writing of nurses notes though,as computers like to shut down or get updated just when you have time for making the required entries for your shift
