Nurses that “only do it for the money”

What is your thought on nurses who only join the profession for financial gains?

Yep!! That’s what I’ve been trying to convey but the convo went south quickly. A bunch of wannabe mean girls on here lol ?

You were trying to convey something? What was it?

Ouch.

I obviously failed miserably at it. ??‍♂️ It all went south quickly.

I genuinely think 99% of the posts, even if they were of differing opinions, were not negative or derogatory towards you at all, and that maybe you misinterpreted the passion/strong opinions in some replies as something it wasn’t mean to be. This is a good topic and everybody on either side of the fence have strong thoughts about it. It would have been a good conversation, but it seems like you got very defensive and unfortunately it has spiraled out of control.

Here's the takeaway: it's 2019 and nursing is one of the few occupations where the motivation is still expected to be primarily altruistic. We've all been dealing with this mindset since each of us became a nurse. We've gotten a little salty about it.

Your original post made it sound like we were supposed to tsk tsk at mercenary nurses who don't belong among us and should be drummed out. Maybe we read that wrong. We're all mercenary. No paycheque, no nurse. Doesn't mean we don't enjoy what we do and work hard to do it to the best of our ability.

Does this help? I get that you weren't expecting a minefield. Sometimes you find yourself in one anyway. I've had whole jobs like that. I do wish you the best.

I am definitely someone that goes to work mostly for the financial gains. I'm saving up to pay cash for graduate school and it's going well. I moved to a new state that pays nurses very well and am satisfied with my jobs. That said, I give great care to each patient regardless.

I left a higher paying industry to go into nursing. I wanted to do something more meaningful. It hasn’t been what I expected. It’s not awful, I guess I just wish I’d known what I know now and stayed in my original industry. Sadly that shipped sailed.

There’s nothing to be suspicious about. People are taking it too serious. Simple question simple answer. Instead I get song and dance.

I just figured it was an interesting topic, instead people got offended and it struck a nerve on some.

Oh well! ??‍♂️

I thought you were taking a final. Internet flounce and all that.

Hi Robin. I was in retail before nursing. I don’t regret a thing but certain aspects of nursing were not was I expected. Not awful like you say, things can always be worse.

I love nursing. I even like my job. I don't know about it being a "calling", but I do believe God has led me to this point in my life. I go volunteer in places.

I would not however remain in this job without getting paid. Yes, I do it for the money. I just also happen to enjoy it (well, most of the time).

As for getting your knickers in a wad (it's my ball and I'm going home, delete the thread!), seriously? This wasn't even an arguementative thread; people are giving opinions and different viewpoints... what else is a discussion for? Do we actually want to all sing in a chorus, absolutely same words and melodies. Give me a grand smashing wild & wooly symphony any time.
