What is your thought on nurses who only join the profession for financial gains?
OP.
I have been reading and following this thread. I have seen little that has been mean spirited. From what I have read and interpreted, you seem to be of the belief that nursing is more than a job. For many of us it is a job that we like and love, but just like other professions, it is a job. You can be great at any job, but at the end of the day, I love my family and my free time
I didn’t read all the comments before posting. Didn’t realise there was argument going on. But probably should have known, Ive been part of this argument before. And not interesting in doing it again.
but just my 2 cent
Getting a job somewhere like retail, which requires zero qualifications and anyone can do, is the type of job you do solely for money.
But any job; not just nursing, that you are going to dedicate time and money to go to school for, make sure it’s something your at least slightly interested in.
Nursing is job. Like any other job, we deserve to be paid what we are worth. Saying it’s a calling, that’s its all about helping others ect is out dated way if thinking.
OP. This has been a good thread. It shows the great variety of nursing there is across the US and even international. It is an interesting issue. Some people believe that all nurses should feel a "calling" others are motivated by the flexibility of the profession, others like it becuase of the science behind the practice. This is what is great. We all became nurses for our own reason and that is fine.. Just because I like being a nurse because of the advocacy and teaching aspect doesn't make me less of a nurse who wants to hold the hand of a sick and dying patient.
