I am curious how many of us have close family members (parent, grandparent especially) who are nurses, and whether or not this inspired you in your career choice.

I will answer for myself...my mom is a nurse, as was my great-grandmother and an aunt. I cannot say that this inspired me to go into nursing, however. My mom was in management by the time I was old enough to really understand what she did for a living, and I knew 100% that I did NOT want to follow in those footsteps! I was inspired to consider nursing as a second career after my husband was hospitalized and subsequently required surgery.

My sister-in-law and my niece.

Specializes in I/DD.

I'm somewhat surprised at the number of people with no close friends/relatives who are nurses. Most people I work with/know say it "runs in the family." I am the first nurse in my family, but most of them are teachers, particularly in special Ed.

Specializes in CDI Supervisor; Formerly NICU.

My wife is a nurse. She didn't really inspire me to become a nurse, but she also didn't try to dissuade me from doing it when I needed badly to change careers.

None of my blood kin are nurses, as I am the only member of my family to ever attend college.

Specializes in MedSurg, OR, Cardiac step down.

7 and I am counting on one of them to get me a job!

my cousin's ex husband is a CRNA but that's it...my career change to nursing has more to do with some really good patient care I've received over the years...

My sister is an RN, but I wouldn't say that she influenced me to enter nursing.

I got two cousins who are RNs. Many friends who are RNs. None of them influenced my decision.

All on my mom's side of the family.

My mom is an RN.

Both of my mom's sister's (my aunt's) finished their BSN abroad but chose a different career after moving to the US.

My mom's brother (uncle) is an RN.

My mom's other brother's wife (aunt) is an RN abroad.

Two of my cousin's on my mom's side are in school for their BSN, soon to be RN's.

Then I have I think two second cousins abroad who are in nursing school.

I just started nursing school this past Monday. I have 2 nieces and 3 cousins that are LPNs and an aunt who's an RN. I have been a Medical Assistant for 20 years and I wanted to move up the ladder. It's a career that i have disired to be a part of most of my life, but circumstances, and a very sick mother to take care of prevented me from school until recently.

Specializes in LTC.

My two ex sister-in-laws are RNs..one was a nurse when I met her, the other became a nurse after me. It wasn't the sis-in-law that influenced me to go to nursing school, though. I wanted to be a math professor at some university or another (yeah, I'm that girl that takes extra math classes for fun). My ex-husband and I were watching a Barbara Walter's special on the crisis of the shortage of nurses, the awesome hours, and the awesome pay...ex-hubby talked me into it. This was in 2001, a year after I graduated high school. We were broke, I was bored from time off school, so I enrolled at a community college. Turns out I actually love nursing :); now I am in school to finish my BSN/MSNed so I can teach, fulfilling my dream full circle!

Specializes in Critical Care, ED, Cath lab, CTPAC,Trauma.

I have 2 Aunts and 3 (2male 1 female)cousins. Both my sisters are nurses. My sisters and I were all nurses before everyone with the exception of the one Aunt so we inspired all the others. Two of my cousins were Coal Miners hurt in a mining accident who "re-trained" to become nurses. One is an ED nurse the other works in corrections.

Specializes in Med-Surg; Telemetry; School Nurse pk-8.

I have 3 cousins, my sister, and my sister-in-law who are nurses. According to family history, 2 great-grandmothers were country midwives. That's just who I could think of off the top of my head. I can't say that it knowingly influenced my career choice, but now you have me wondering if there is something more going on here...

Very interesting Purple Scrubs!
