Do you have family members who are nurses?

I am curious how many of us have close family members (parent, grandparent especially) who are nurses, and whether or not this inspired you in your career choice.

I will answer for myself...my mom is a nurse, as was my great-grandmother and an aunt. I cannot say that this inspired me to go into nursing, however. My mom was in management by the time I was old enough to really understand what she did for a living, and I knew 100% that I did NOT want to follow in those footsteps! I was inspired to consider nursing as a second career after my husband was hospitalized and subsequently required surgery.

Was trained in college to be elementary school art teacher. Went to nursing school after that but have to admit...........when I got to do both.............the teaching kids art was so much more rewarding!

My mom is a FNP, working on her doctorate. I really had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, only that my present career (I used to own a dog kennel) was not going to work out financially. My mom is 100% the reason I started nursing school, I went into it blindly hoping I'd like the work and based on my mom's recommendation. She said I'd like it and it would be stable. She was right.

I've always wanted to be a nurse and there are no nurses in my family at all. Just me :) I am hoping at least one of my children will follow in my footsteps though!

I have two aunts and a cousin who's a nurse. People always told my mom she should've been but she didn't do it. Guess it's in our blood.

For me I always wanted to work in healthcare and when I watched my mother go through her RN in my senior years of highschool I decided I'd like to be a RN too. (She was an EEN (LPN) when I was growing up. Thus the desire to work in healthcare, she told the BEST stories ^.^)

Two of my aunts are also nurses (LPN's).

Since becoming a nurse another aunt has gone into nursing, so that makes three nursing aunts. A nursing mother and recently a cousin desiring to become a nurse.

....kinda dangerous it's like the nursing bug is catchy. XD

I do and it definitely influenced me but not in a "We are nurses so you should be one too!". My grandmother was an RN, my aunt an LPN and my mother desperately wanted to become an RN (however, because of financial issues she couldn't attend school and is now not in good enough health to pursue it). Because of all of these people in my life I was raised around hospitals, doctors offices and watching medical shows since I was a toddler.

I am fourth generation nurse as my mom, grandmother, & great-grandmother were all nurses preceding me. I don't really think that had much, if any, influence on my decision to become a Registered Nurse. My most favorite thing to do is to help others. I have even been told I do so at my own expense. While I don't remember doing so, my mom told me years ago & after the fact that she remembers the night I came downstairs to tell my parents I made the decision that I want to become a nurse (other option was a teacher) after graduating high school. I do have a picture taken the day I graduated nursing school (I went to a Diploma School of Nursing) with my grandmother, mom, & myself, three generations of nurses, on the wall with other related pictures. Looking back, I think I was favored by Nana because I was a RN. She gave me somethings she thought I could use, her old textbooks & glass syringes. I do find her textbooks interesting, one has a copyright dated 1898. I worked for over 31.5 years in the hospital where I trained. My speciality was PACU & I took my certification exam in 1993 & luckily I passed on my first attempt. I renewed my certification by going the CEU route, getting 90 CEU's/3 years. Unfortunately the hospital was forced to close it's doors, except for the ER, in 8/2008. There will be no fifth generation as I never had children. With the way our healthcare system is presently I don't know how I would feel were they to become a RN. I have a hard time with putting a person's comfort & well-being second to the almighty $$$. I don't have any nurses in my family, just military members. :)

Seriously, I got into nursing when I began reading the Cherry Ames and Sue Barton Series when I was growing up. I thought it was so glamorous to be wearing white all the time and I had a thing for the caps. I read everything I could about nursing that I could lay my hands on. I knew before I left nursing school what specialty I wanted to working in...Maternal/Child care. So I work L&D, Maternity, Nursery, NICU, and Peds. Not all at once mind you, but I like all of them.

I have friends who are nurses and some of them are 2nd and 3rd generation. I've encouraged my daughter (she wants to do vet science instead). Oh well.

My sister and I went to school a year apart for nursing. We both became RN". My Brother works security in a hospital, my sister in law works in medical records, 2 nieces are also attending school to be a RN. I just always remembered from grade school that nursing was what I wanted to do and I never wavered from that thought.

My grandmother who has long since passed was an LPN in a small town ER. My grandfather, her husband, was the town sherriff. They are both long dead and I wish I could have asked them for stories! I never knew my grandmother was a nurse until I went to nursing school, and then my mother told me.

My father is a pathologist, though.
