“It was the worst pain I’ve ever experienced in my life. it was like a part of me was missing,” Slayton said.

Single mom and nurse Katie Slayton was arrested for driving under the influence as well as felony child neglect because her son was in the car. Her son went to foster care for 9 weeks.  This happened after she worked a grueling 12 hour shift in the COVID-19 ward.

I think we forget that drowsy driving can be as bad as drunk driving and can easily lead to equally bad outcomes for drivers, passengers, and innocent others.

Foster care for the kid and how long the blood results to get back are outrageous. That being said after watching that video it's hard to argue that she should have been allowed to drive away with her kid in the car. Just a terrible lose-lose situation.

Yea me too, I had sympathy at first, but after watching the video, I wouldn't have wanted her to drive home with her child.

I thought DUI meant they tested you right away at the traffic stop and had some kind of machine that alerted them that you were actually under the influence.

I wish she could have just taken a quick nap after work or I wish she could have explained to the daycare her situation and they let her rest a bit there.  You're right tho it is lose lose situation.

I guess sober impairment is a thing.

I worked a night shift and fell asleep at a traffic light in heavy traffic once.  The people honking at me woke me right up and I was mortified but wide awake.

I sympathize with her but if I got pulled over by a cop, no matter how tired I was adrenaline would kick and I'd be wide awake.  I certainly wouldn't be exhibiting erratic behavior and having slurred speech.  Something seems off here.

That being said, I'm not in her shoes, we all react to fatigue differently,  and don't want to sound all judgey.  I wish her well.

I get it.. but a cops job is to serve and protect. So as nurses when patients come in drunk and hurt should we say let’s not treat them?  It’s the same thing. Being DRUNK OR INTOXICATED IS SET BY THE DOT. Department of transportation. If you pass their drug test and can pass a breathalyzer. You legally do not fit the terms of intoxication under the law. I am happy to provide proof. Please I urge you to read your laws and ADVOCATES FOR YOUR NURSES. As you would any patient. BecauE this poor nurse is going thru I’m sure she would rather die. She’s going to get fired lose her license be forced into a recovery program and fight for her child all from probably BEING MANDATED TO WORK. It’s NOT. DUI. WHAT ARE YOU UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF? No substance or alcohol. They compare it to such but STOP JUSTIFYING IT SO THIS HAPPENS. It’s called EXHAUSTION. BEING A HUMAN. Nobody is perfect. I’m sure you have had your kids in the car a time or two you wish you had not. I’m not pointing fingers just let’s not call the kettle black. We MAKE MISTAKES. Our personal Lives have ZERO TO DO WITH PRACTICE. Guess what she’s going to Be labeled as a child abuser and with an SUD and it be SPLASHED ON THE INTERNET FOREVER. How do you feel about that?? Why is that the publics right to know her health diagnosis! Ever for any of us!

She's a fool for taking Adderall and driving with a child... like seriously..

This is a joke, right?

Wow JUDGEMENT ITS HER RIGHT AND HER PRESCRIPTION. Do you know what happens when she doesn’t take it? Wow. Her falling asleep and Adderall have nothing to do with one another. Wow! Perhaps you should not be a nurse. Or go back to school. Read the Bible, go cleanse or heal your judgment issues. The kid is OK. She was working not a bar. Took her medication that she has to take to function so you have ADHD? I do. I am not on a stimulant at this time, by my choice. I struggle to do what most can do in a few hours. Perhaps support her. Look at the disease process and understand- she also was cleared of charges. Do you understand the law either? I’m serious like totally.

Hmmm. I know people who take this and had no idea it had this effect with driving. Learn something new everyday.

Did you guys watch the video?. Maybe she should t have been arrested but she DEF should not drive that child or get behind the wheel.

She doesn't have a right to privacy for health diagnosis... the SCOTUS just decided that can be applied in this situation too.

Nobody should drive if they are impaired, but the point was she took her PRESCRIBED MEDICATION. WHICH MAKES IT LEGAL in all 50 states. YOU have never worked and then sat down and just realized how tired you really were? HIPPA still stands it wasn’t abolished.
