Who is taking this with me? Let's support each other. I am currently looking to see if I can find the reading assignments before the week the class opens.

I already took this class. I suggest you find every nursing book you have that talks about assessment in GREAT detail You will do very specific assessments such as ears, eyes, neck, chest, abdomen etc. It is the closest to a real nursing class in a very medical sense of science. You will be writing extensively, answering questions from a template provided. You are to assess a real person and write your findings using medical jargon. I actually liked the class. However, I had saved every book from nursing school and that helped me a lot.

I'm in! Thanks for the info EmJeanRN! I will start digging out my old books as well.

I agree, I liked the class too. I actually discovered my daughter has a convergence disorder in her left eye by doing cranial nerve exam on her. She has glasses now. Very interesting class, but a lot of work.

Specializes in Emergency, DD, Military.

This class was a lot of work, more than any other, but, I got my best grade as well, so, maybe I made it harder than it needed to be.

Hi,

I am taking this class this summer too. I am really looking forward to it.

@EmJeanRN, what kind of writing should we prepare for? Discussion boards, papers?

Thanks for the info.

Templates...very lengthy templates asking detailed questions on physical assessments. I felt like a medical specialist after each section. Seriously it was quite detailed and specific. Having physical assessment books will help you a lot. We also had to do assignments from a website supplied by your textbook. I would have to go back and dig out the information when I have time.

This is your week one reading assignment:

  1. Jarvis, C. (2012). Physical examination & health assessment (6th ed.). St. Louis, MO: Elsevier. Read Chapters 1-5, 10, and 11.
  2. Healthy People 2020: Risk Factors and Healthy Lifestyle at: http://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/
  3. Health Promotion Article: health promotion strategies for older workers.pdf
  4. Penders Article: Pender Toward a Definition of Health.pdf
  5. Additional Penders Article: Pender Individual Models to Promote Health Behavior.pdf

You will be doing a general health history in week one that includes a genogram. Look over chapter 4 for this health history. You will receive very specific instructions from your professor on how this is written up. Also, you have to have your client (could be family member) sign a consent form and send that in. Ideally, they would like a different age group assessed each week. So, a different client will need a new consent form every week. Each week you will focus on a specific body system. For example one week will be a detailed focus on Eyes, ears, nose and throat. Children are often a good choice for this type of assessment. My daughter had VERY large, swollen tonsils that I found quite shocking. She will have them removed next week as a matter of fact. I enjoyed the science aspect of this class. Also, when you write your assessments they do not have to be complete sentences as if you are writing a paper. HOWEVER, you do need references. Because it is a template...you do not need title page etc.

Thanks SOOOO much! I am going to start reading tonight. This sounds like a great class. I have been taking the statistics and ev. based nursing classes recently, so this will be a nice change of pace... REAL NURSING:)

Im new in this site and I taking 4520 as well. Thank you for the info.

EmJeanRN, thanks for your tips and info! So, if we have to fill out a consent form for a child, as the parents we would sign it, correct? Silly question, but making sure since I will use my son lol. I am glad I have all of my med-surg and other assessment textbooks. How about discussion boards, we don't have any? I would like a break from them.

1. Child as client...yes, you can sign as the parent...but they still need the paperwork.

2. Discussion Board...yes still have to do DB's. 3-4 paragraphs with APA.
