I am moving to the Dallas/Fort Worth area next week and wanted to ask a question. Someone had indicated that North Texas has very few nursing opportunities. I just wanted to know if there was any truth to this person's statement. If it is true, then I am worried about my future. :uhoh21:
I was in Dallas today. I looked at the paper and there was one ad in for a nurse, just one ad.I am further north in TX than Dallas, and as I have stated here before, there are hardly any nursing jobs in my area. That's one reason I'm a traveler.
DFW and north Texas outside of DFW are two completely different things.
Both areas cannot be lumped into one description.
Jobs and pay rates in Dallas are completely different than they are in Denton, Paris, or Sherman.
When I lived in Dallas, I worked with many nurses who traveled 100+ miles from outside areas to work in Dallas.
Two completely different job markets.
ft worth paper the career builder section is usually full of ads, also look at career builder on line and there are even more there. I know i tried to find an lvn job in the dfw area and it was very hard to find something for lvn's. most dr offices want ma's and most hospitals want rn's or cna's. if you don't mind ltc you won't have a problem and it pays well.

Welcome to Texas!
There are many new Hospitals and Surgery Center's going up in the DFW area. The Sunday paper always has a lot of listings for nurses. I agree that a LTC facility might be your best bet as an LVN for both availibility and pay scale...but you could keep looking while working and maybe get in to another position within a hospital if that's what you want. I started as a LPN in Illinois and worked in a LTC facility while bridging over to RN. The experience you can gain in that area is very helpful. It gives you a whole new understanding of what the CNA's go through everyday. It makes you more aware of the care you give as well. Rewarding and very humbling, in my opinion.
Good-Luck if you haven't already found something!

Ok...I guess I'd have to clarify why I said what I did. I agree that the Hospital setting is always the BEST place for any new grad nurse...RN or LVN. In my situation, I had to go with the most $$$ and the best schedule...I couldn't work nights and I couldn't be on-call...(single mom with toddler). If I had it to do all over, I'd want to go to the Hospital and take a the absolute hardest position my license would allow---just for the experience! But that's easy for me to say now...LOL! I was scared to death then. I did it kinda backwards...LTC as an LPN then Doctor's office as a new grad RN. Not the best way. But luckily I was a quick learner and had some expert mentor's as I moved in to harder positions. I've been lucky.
May you have that same luck...in what ehatever you do!

"The only bad nursing judgements are...not knowing when to ask for help and not know when to say...'I don't know.' "
I have been in Texas since November 25, 2005. Actually, I connected my computer yesterday.TheCommuter, are you in Texas now, and did you find a job??????
I scheduled my NCLEX-PN examination for December 28 in Hurst, TX and won't begin applying for jobs until I have an actual nursing license in my possession. Thanks to everyone for responding to my initial question.

DFW nursing jobs are a dime a dozen!
I would only use Kindred as a back-up plan if other acute hospitals don't want to hire new grads.
The LTAC's can be the better paying places for LVN's such as Kindred, HealthSouth, LifeCare, Select, etc. so look them up if you really need a job that pays well for LVN's but.......
The patients are heavy, heavy care, spent a long time in the hospital, and will often have psychotic families to go along with them that threaten law suits daily.
In addition, many of your co-workers there will be bottom-of-the-barrel nurses and will not set good examples for a new grad.
Kindred is well known in Dallas for ruining nurse's careers by falsely reporting them to Group One and the BNE, I know 3 nurses personally who've had that happen when I lived there. So, buyer beware.
UT Southwestern, Medical City Dallas, Medical Center of Lewisville, the VA, and Baylor hospitals all hire LVN's.
I'm sure there are more but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.
Please look into them before turning to the LTAC's for a job.
