North-East Blizzard - Everyone Becareful Reporting and Leaving Duty

Published

Just got in and am here to tell you NYC is horrible! Blowing snow, ice, wind, it's like something out of a film out there. Driving into Manhatan from SI was *not* fun, even with 4WD! *LOL*

Anyone reporting to and or leaving duty tonight take care on the roads, and or trying to get on what is left of public transportation (LIRR is not running, MTA buses are literally stopped in their tracks all over the city, though from the news reports the subway is running mostly fine).

Oh, if you are reporting for duty there is a good chance you *may* be stuck there, so bring your *bag*! *LOL*

I live almost 50mi away my hospital, so I went to a hotel about a straight-shot mile down the road Saturday night before the storm came and stayed there two nights since I worked Sun evening and a few hours today. We ended up with about 6-8" in the town where I work and about a foot where I live. There would've been no way I could've gotten out of my driveway had I stayed put until later. I came home today and the roads were mostly fine until I got into my own county, then they got a little dicey.

My hospital would've had a room for me to stay in - our census was low and there was plenty of space - but I wouldn't have been able to sleep knowing where I was. So I opted for my own space and stayed elsewhere even if it was on my own dime. It was so worth it.

Everyone, do stay safe and warm.

oy! stayed at work last noc....after doing the day shift....to do days this morn.....left work to come home, about 2/3 the way, got rear ended at the bottom of an off ramp....damn!

Well, cannot believe how bad things are in NYC and NJ!

Jersey was on (still is?) state of emergency with requests for anyone *not* required personnel (doctors, nurses, and certain other workers) to stay off the roads and at home. Some hospital systems (Meridian) sent out crews to collect staff, but often found while the major roadways were "passable" getting to the side streets was another matter. So unless the staffer in question could make it to where the 4x4 was from their house, the whole exercise was moot. Lots of hubbies out there in AWD getting their wives who are nurses to where they needed to be.

What amazed me was how many persons were literally stuck on the parkways, highways and such. Some persons had been there since 4PM on Sunday, and were still there by 6AM Monday morning!

Thank goodness we live in the age of cell phones so persons were able to reach out and let persons know what was going one. One poor man was stuck on the Garden State (near the Homdel), called into local news program to say where he was and that he was a cardiac patient (several stents), and was without his meds. Having sat sitting for hours already the guy was clearly getting nervous.

Personally don't know why so many people took to the roads late yesterday afternoon when it was clearly announced the storm was picking up speed. It started blowing around 12N in NYC, and by 3pm was coming down very heavy. Four wheel drive or not, during weather like this you really should stay put unless there is a very good reason to get out on the streets.

On a lighter note, aren't you girls glad the days of whites, especially mandatory dresses are for the most part long gone? *LOL* Can you imagine climbing through mounds of snow, dealing with blowing winds and freezing temps with nothing but nylons and a layer of poly/cotton blend? I mean even with several sweaters and a down coat it still would be a mess! :D

Everyone stay safe and unless you really don't need to be out, don't go. Enjoy those Christmas dinner leftovers, again.

We just missed this one! Everything stayed on the Eastern side of the Chesapeake Bay. Last Feb. was enough for me! I got stuck here for all the blizzards!

...and it's still a mess here in NYC. Streets still not plowed, city bus lines not running due to buses not able to get through the streets. There are over 1000 buses stranded throughout the city. Above-ground trains not running because tracks still aren't cleared. Best part about the storm is that my kids are enjoying it!!! They built a fort in front of the house which they say keeps them warm through hours of playing.

This is one of the things you gotta love/hate about nursing. This job is 24/7 365 days a year. Which should translate in more jobs right? Well not really, at least not presently.

The weather conditions and the fact that you are mandated and expected to show up to work regardless are things people should consider about when they get into nursing.
