UNC ABSN 2015

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hey, all! Since today is the day the ABSN application closes for UNC, I figured I would start a thread so we could see who else applied. I graduated in May from NC State with a bachelor's in public relations. I took my prerequisite science courses at State (since I decided I wanted to pursue nursing late into my Junior year) and finished out my degree. I've been working at UNC hospitals as a CNA since I graduated. Waiting until August is going to drive me nuts! Is anyone else applying to other programs? As far as January start dates go I think only Duke has sent out acceptances, but I didn't apply there. Hope to hear from some of you and go through the wait together!

I sent my application in on Saturday. Graduated from UNC in December with a bio/spanish degree and am also working at UNC hospital. Food service, though. I'm hoping that still counts for something!

Did you look into scholarships that the hospital gives for people going to nursing school? I wasn't sure if it was for people who had already gotten in or not.

I'm sure food service counts just as much! I could definitely attest to how hard y'all work, haha. I haven't looked into the scholarships at all, I didn't want to jump the gun :scrying:. But from what I've heard from other CNAs that are in the program/ RNs on my floor that went to UNC, the only sort of thing we could possibly do is get reimbursed for classes we take. We might have to be working full time in order to qualify, which I definitely won't be doing if I get in! Did you apply anywhere else?

I'm going to apply to Winston-salem, duke, queens, and unc's regular program also. I live so close that I wouldn't mind taking a few extra months over having to move or commute forever.

I applied to Winston-Salem, too. I'm from Charlotte originally so if I don't get in to this program I'll probably apply to queens accelerated and UNC's regular program. Sounds like we're thinking pretty similarly!

I also applied for UNC ABSN program. This is my first choice and would love to return to Chapel Hill. I graduated from UNC in 2012. I applied to the regular program last round, but unfortunately did not get in. Since then I have boosted my volunteer experience because apparently that is a big deal to the admissions committee. I am hoping that since the applicant pool is smaller for the ABSN program, I have a better change of getting in!

I also am applying to Queens and MUSC..

Yeah, honestly my gpa isn't great but I have a decent amount of volunteer experience. After talking to someone in the program who took 3 years to get in, I don't feel great about my chances but it's worth a shot.

I'm still undecided about, if I don't get in, whether to commute to another school or wait another year and try again.

I have a fair amount of volunteer experience as well as CNA experience, so I am crossing my fingers that it's enough. My undergrad GPA was decent enough and my science GPA is pretty high, but I'm trying to keep my expectations low since I know the program is really competitive.

I have applied for UNC's absn program as well. I have already been accepted to Duke, so now just waiting to hear from UNC so a decision can be made. :-) Good luck to everyone! No matter your background, getting it all together for these programs is tough work!

Hey, hollybell! You're definitely right about the programs being tough regardless. If you don't mind my asking, which school are you more partial to? Just curious since I didn't apply to duke and don't know about much about their program :-)

Hello,

I am so glad someone made a forum for those who are applying to the 2015 UNC ABSN program-thank you! (:

Here is a little bit about myself:

-Just graduated in May from NCSU with a double major in Human Biology (3.6 GPA) and Spanish (3.95 GPA)

-Also currently working as a CNA at UNC's hospital

-Volunteered at the NC Children's Hospital throughout college, have gone on 3 medical trips, Habitat for Humanity, MDA summer camps, etc.

- Additionally, I have conducted and published two years of undergraduate research while at State.

It's a pretty competitive school and it can sometimes be hard to know what exactly they are looking for. I have had friends with all kinds of GPAs and volunteer work/activities get in. My essays could have definitely used more time, but I did the best I could during my crazy summer to work on it. Best of luck to everyone and I hope the wait isn't too horrible.

If anyone else would like to share a mini bio, stats and interests/activities, it would be cool to learn more about this year's applicant pool!

Hi, Sofiacna! Wow, you are definitely decorated! I'm impressed :-) It's always nice to see a fellow NC State grad applying as well!

Like you, I graduated from NCSU this past May. I earned my degree in communication- public relations and ended with around a 3.4 GPA. Since my previous degree didn't allow me any science clearance to take A&P or micro, I took those courses at Wake Tech. I went to an information session about this program at UNC and found out that the admissions committee takes your grades in A&P I/ II, microbiology, statistics, and psychology to create a "science GPA" to look at seperately as well. In this case, my science GPA would be a 4.0.

I volunteered pretty heavily throughout college, mostly with the big brother/ big sister afterschool program, habitat for humanity, and the ronald mcdonald house. I also had a part time job while in school, and I am now working full time as an NA I on the rehabilitation unit of UNC memorial. In between my junior and senior year of college I conducted research through Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC in order to discover how technological advances in medicine have effected the care giver/ patient relationship. That research project was what really spurred me on to pursue nursing instead of hospital administration as I had previously planned.

There are some NA's on my floor that are currently in the program, and they have unbelievably varying GPAs/ volunteer experience/ research experience. The wait is already killing me! I can't wait until October.
