You said it well BOSS. I am glad that you spoke up. I was very angered, or should I say hurt by that post of Suzy. I haven't been at this long, but i guarentee you one thing. I love my job. Its what I wanted to do. The medical field would be a sorry place if it wasn't for us LPNs. As the younger ones say "You go girl" Signed another hard working LPN

Well said "the boss". You sound like a very well rounded LPN. Not sure my area offers all those options to LPN's but am glad so many opportunities exist in the nursing field. I wish we all could stand together as a team as well as we seem to be able to point fingers and accusations. Let's help each other - if a co-worker appears to be lacking in a skill - please offer him/her your expertise in a nice manner. By the way, I love this forum. From another LPN

To theboss,
you are very lucky to be able to work in the hospital as you do. I wish people around here where I live would be open-minded to LPNs in the hospital. we are just as capable if not, some are more capable than RNs. Unfortunately, the only position an LPN can get here in the hosp. is in geropsych. if that. otherwise, you work in nursing homes if that's what you prefer. I don't mind it but I do want to work in a hospital, but until I pass my RN boards, geriatrics is where I am for now.
And to "theboss", good for you to speak up...

I hadn't been able to get on the net for several days, so the first thing i did was check out allnurses. I saw this post and got very confused, so I searched to find the original message from Suzy K - now I'm rally confused. Where is all the anger coming from? It seems to me that Suzy K asked a logical and neutral question and a few people flipped out. Why? Do some of you need a vacation or what?

Y'all gotta chill. Take a step back and a deep breath before you go flying off the handle. Suzy K showed no maliciousness in her post, she was simply asking a question
I'm sure to many of you this anger is confusing. The anger did not start with Suzy K's initial question ... it started with C.LO's reply to that question followed by Suzy K's concurring reply. I love debates! But, debates do not equal attacks.

I would really like to see this stop. I tried to play peacemaker on another thread where something similar was happening and was roundly ignored while the vitriol continued to spew. It appeared that people were LOOKING for a reason to be offended and found insult where none seemed to be intended.
Personal attacks (like telling another poster to go away, which I've seen done by several people to fellow posters in various threads lately) are unwarranted and unprofessional. I stopped reading the BB's at MSN Slate because about 75% of the posts were just angry, knee-jerk reactions or crude name-calling insults in response to something someone else said. This is not an equivalent substitute for intelligent debate and discussion. It is BORING. We are educated professionals and we are better than that.
I understand that people come here to vent frustrations, which is great. Just don't do it by trashing your fellow posters. Remember that tone of voice, inflection, etc. don't come through in e-mail and therefore some of the meaning is lost. If you have questions as to a fellow poster's meaning or intent, ask. Give him/her the benefit of the doubt and the opportunity to respond before going on the defensive.
Also--theboss? Please, PLEASE, don't post in all caps. My eyes are bleeding.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread. :-)

Sunshine pointed out that the anger started with CLO's response to my question, not with me, but apparently some people are confused and thus confused everyone else. Also, the anger after CLO's post was directly personally to me by Iris. It seemed to me that she was the one who started this hostility. Was I not entitled to speak up? She blantantly insulted me for no apparent reason. I think my response to her was justified. I don't think "the boss's" response was well put and she wasn't standing up for herself. Who was she defending herself to? Me?? Even in my response to her I asked respectfully why this and why that. Wow. I NEVER said anything negative about LPNs. I asked my questions based on experience. Some people just don't get it. Oh well, how sad for them. Maybe one day they will get it.
By the way, I'm not an ER nurse. I'm a Labor and Delivery nurse.

I agree with you. Suzy K asked a question ,just a question. As for C.LO's reply , I don't agree with it . So what ? I am an LPN and I do know I make a big difference for my patients and as part of the nursing team where I work. I am lucky enough to work with a group of FNP's , who have always encouraged and showed me respect for the work I do .I have learned a great deal from them , even though I had plenty of hospital experience before I started here. I have had jobs where I did most of the things the RN's did , except IV pushes . I think the real difference is education and Responsibility. Bottom line is everyone is entiled to his/her own opinion . It will not change my ability / competency .

OK, Stargazer, I'll try again. I am so tired of this debate. Like I said in my post to suzy, if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all, and then I said I would take my own advise. Lets analyze this. What reaction did suzy really think she was going to elicit from the LPN's? She asked us why we are in our chosen profession instead of hers. So people responded, and they were angry. I just wish that LPN versus RN debate would go away. If I had one wish, it would be that I don't ever have to justify my career choice to anyone again. I truly don't know where LPN's are not utilized. I worked in the state level one trauma center in 1999. I had no trouble getting a job there, and they continue to hire LPN's. The LPN's work on every floor in the hospital...even the intensive care units. I was trained in starting IV's, blood draws, and passing medications. I was treated with the upmost respect by my employer and my skills were appreciated and utilized to the fullest extent. Everyone is not an RN and every other health care provider is utilized to their fullest extent in my area. I didn't feel the need to respond to suzy's outlandish request, and that is what it truly was. People make choices in their life for a variety of reasons, everyones circumstances are different, and they make the best decision they can with what they have to work with. Now stargazer, I will tell you why I became an LPN. And
I will tell you because you are kind and I feel you respect me and my career choice. My husband and I had just bought a brand new mobile home for $11,000 dollars...it was 1978, and this was an unbelieveable amount of money to us, and we had two children, 4 and 5. My husband was a mechanic at a local dealership. He was our only source of income, as I had been a stay at home mom with only a high school diploma and no special training. Well we had been in our new mobile home approx. one month and had made the first payment. He came home one night and said..."I lost my job today, my last day is Friday." Well for a minute, well actually quite a few I thought he was kidding, but finally I realized it was the truth. I had always wanted to be a nurse since I was a little girl. The month was June, and I knew I needed to learn a skill to help so this would never happen again. By February of 1979 I started LPN school and graduated in December of that year. After a few weeks I realized that I loved it but it was too late to go to RN school. I wanted to be an RN but something always got in the way. I took some CPE's and passed and thought I was on my way...16 college credits. But someone always needed something and it just never seemed to be the right time. I don't hate RN's...I wanted to be one in the worst way...it just never happened. But you know what...we always had my income...never had any trouble finding a job. Still don't. In fact I was working home care...high tech pediatrics...kids with trachs, on vents at home, feeding tubes, pumps....All alone with the mom gone. But I gave it all up...just since January. I do social work now...home based case management..trying to overcome the barriers that people have to becoming employed. And I do this with my 21yrs of LPN training and experience. So stargazer that is why I became an LPN. See you on the boards....bye
