Well realnurse, thanks for your answer of why you became an LPN. Whew. Took ALL that for you to answer. What I was hoping to elicit was exactly what you just told to Stargazer. Please do me a favor and don't think you know what my intentions are. Everyone's circumstances are different, yes, people's situations are different. Maybe being an LPN was about the times or the hospital, as some posters outlined, or the continuing education. My question stemmed from your own words of how an LPN is the same as an RN, just gets paid less. So, logically one would ask, why not be an RN and do the same thing for more money? I never delineated our professions, as you did. Like I said, we laid off all the LPNs in our area and they don't do nearly as much as The Boss by any means. I still don't know where your hostility came from, I don't think you know either, but after all of that, I finally got my answer from you. Just took a little effort.

Thanks for the in-depth response, realnurse. You are correct, I do respect you and your career choices. Maybe it's Pollyanna-ish of me, but I truly believe that most of the people on these boards do also.

She asked us why we are in our chosen profession instead of hers.

Ouch. I'd like to think that we are all on slightly different paths of the SAME profession.

If I had one wish, it would be that I don't ever have to justify my career choice to anyone again.

I took Susy's question to be one of genuine intellectual curiosity, not as a challenge. I could be wrong. As I said, since tone and inflection and facial expression don't come across on the boards, it's certainly possible to misread someone. But that's why I pretty much prefer to assume intent is benign unless proven otherwise. smile.gif And you are correct, you never should have to justify your career choice to anyone. Ever.

After a few weeks I realized that I loved it but it was too late to go to RN school.

Well, it sounds like your career is going great and you don't care to make a big change right now, but remember....if you really DID want to....it's NEVER too late!!

Edited to add, while probably not uncommon, your story was kind of sad and yet really inspiring at the same time. Your family needed you to step up to the plate and become the breadwinner, and you just DID. This is one of the many reasons why nurses rock! Being in this situation has to be scary and stressful, and probably has a lot to do with why so many nurses are reluctant to become anarchists at work, to the eternal disappointment of some other posters who shall remain nameless [*cough* wildtime88 *cough*] wink.gif

Can't we just all get along and be nice to one another?

I would like to remind you that Suzy Q merely asked a question, Go back and reread her post. I can't see the hostility in her post, and I certainly cannot understand the overwhelming negative response she got. For pete's sake, people, there is more to life than your definition of nursing-whatever that may be. Honestly, is her question off limits? Why did it elicit such a drastically negative response? I for one respect ALL nurses for what they do. It's true that some of us cannot hold jobs that others can. I for one, am a BSN, who is a school nurse. In Ohio, one must have an RN and a college degree. Does that make me better? NO! Just different.

This message is for SuzyK,

Every one is entitled to their own opinions. You were merely asking a question about LPN's and someone starts to criticize. Don't we get enough negative feedback at work? We come on this BB to share information, ideas and to vent. We shouldn't be bashing one another. I'm sorry that you are being treated this way biggrin.gif

I hadn't been able to get on the net for several days, so the first thing i did was check out allnurses. I saw this post and got very confused, so I searched to find the original message from Suzy K - now I'm rally confused. Where is all the anger coming from? It seems to me that Suzy K asked a logical and neutral question and a few people flipped out. Why? Do some of you need a vacation or what?

Read the entire post, then comment. Thank you.

You need to be an LPN to understand this. Susy K. had subtle undertones that were disrespectful. Reading is a good idea, especially reading critically.

I am not trying to add fuel to a fire here but would honestly like to know-where can an LPN push any IV meds? Not in our scope of practice the last time I checked.I can certainly start IV's-hang certain solutions and piggies. But run a code? If you mean hold that clipboard with one eye on the clock-well I have done that, too.(After I moved the furniture and family out of the way)Do you actually decide which meds to push? Call for the paddles? I am in southeastern PA-seems like I have missed out a lot...

LPN's can do IV pushes in 15 states of the United States... Texas and Oklahoma are 2 of them.

C'mom people! Are you all insane??? I don't even think you know what you are angry at. I did NOT mean any negativity by asking a simple question. For god's sake, what would make me think that asking some LPNs on the net why they chose thier track, after reading for DAYS how LPNs are being laid off (and not just in WI - read the post entitled "NO MORE LPNS") would generate them to freak out. I don't even think you know what you are reading. Sunshine stated that I concurred with CLO. Are you all blind?? I NEVER concurred with him. Naturally I am going to get sarcastic here - what would you think I would do? You are accusing me of things that I never said, and are assuming that by asking a question that I somehow have this deep, hidden, evil agenda. Get real. Yes I am being hostile here, because you can not even TELL me where I stated these things you are accusing me of. I have challenged 3 people to do so and they have not been able to. And my post to realnurse, for thanking her for answering the question -was a tad sarcastic yes, but the point is to show you all what it was I was after with my initial post. I was after her story that she posted to Stargazer. That is what I wanted. And I think I have a right to be a little sarcastic to her - she bashed me for about 2 days before finally putting her story in writing. So yes, read the entire post - and then comment.

Nurse Mark, I believe I do read very critically, thank you. I don't have to be an LPN to understand this-that there is much hostility between LPNS and RNS. You gave the same reply to a poster above me-to read critically. I will reiterate that I don't read that there was a hostile intent in SuzyQ's question, mainly curiosity. Just because I don't agree with you does NOT mean that I have a problem with reading critically.
