I found myself so fond of Katie Duke in her NYER days. But her shameless self promotion to win Dr. Oz's nurse contest has really just turned me off. She and Kati Kleber have suddenly become the face of nursing, and yet, I feel a disconnect, as if they don't truly represent what nursing is like at all.
In light of The View controversy, I just wish nursing DID have an honest, accurate face.
Just my two cents!
Not everyone lives and dies by what goes on in social media. I knew who they both were: Katie from the TV show, and the "nurse eyeroll" chick from seeing her site once. But I agree that if you're going to start a discussion about something/someone, you should provide your readers with more background information than "just Google it."And not for nothing, but this looks to me like a thread whose purpose is to badmouth another nurse. Isn't that what those talking heads at "The View" did, which got so many nurses here all het up ?
(Waiting to be accused of NETY in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...)
Nope. No NETY. I'm not that sensitive and that term clearly doesn't apply here.
Again, I stand by my statement that in my follow-up posts, I adequately explained who they were.
And it wasn't intended to "bash" another nurse, but more to start a dialogue on how nurses in the public ought use their recognition to change the system, not for personal gain. Especially if they claim that's their intent in the first place.
I love those real life ER shows, so I definitely knew who Katie Duke is.
I liked one post of Nurse Eyeroll's way back in the day when I was a nursing student and I subscribed to her blog, but I keep meaning to unsubscribe from her stuff now because it's 99% sponsored adverts now. Oh, she tried a new bag! Oh, she tried new scrubs! Oh, here's her affiliate link so she can make a profit if you click this link and buy these scrubs!!!
Ugh.
I can't say I wouldn't be doing the same thing, I like free money and I would really like to have affiliate links that would pay me free money, but it's definitely wrecked her credibility for me.

Right! The sponsorships! It's frustrating. They're getting compensated for doing their job? Being the "public" faces of nursing but not really bringing the issues to light?
I liked NYER. Watched it a lot. But I agree, I feel like lately she has kind of "sold out". I don't know anything about anybody getting fired or social media. I did subscribe to a couple of things she did only to unsubscribe. Not interested in those who go by what the advertisers want them to do. But she's cute, blonde hair and blue eyed so the advertisers like her so I guess I can't blame her, I'm just not interested.
How old are you, op? You're really quite rude with your insinuation that everyone who doesn't watch reality tv crap is "in the dark". Reality tv in this house is cnn My precious little time for tv viewing is not going to be spent watching a housewife, a kardashion or a duggar. Most certainly not some scripted show about nurses!!
I think in my following posts I did an adequate job of explaining who they are.Edit: And not to mention, it never occurred to me that anyone would be that in the dark. I made the assumption (erroneously so) that they were common internet names.

I'm not sure what my age has to do with it, but since you asked, I'll be 31 in exactly 2 weeks.
If you read my prior post, I clarified my "in the dark" comment. I also followed it up with a genuine apology.
Simply because you choose to watch something differently in your spare time doesn't necessarily mean those of us who put on "crap reality TV" are less than you. THAT statement was really quite rude.
Just throwing in my opinion.........I have personally talked to Kati Kleber (nurse eye roll) and found her to be quite genuine and articulate. She actually kinda got her start here......we have some articles she wrote that resonated quite well with our readers.
And I fully believe this. I believe that both she and Katie Duke went in having a genuine interest in being an accurate face of nursing. But I'm not sure what happened along the way. Maybe it's the dazzle of the endorsements. Or maybe the pseudofame. But the end result sort of missed the mark. That's just my opinion. And I certainly respect anyone who feels differently.
It seems that, if anyone is even remotely close to nursing in any way, that they would be well aware of Katie Kleber's book. I saw her tweet about being on Dr. Oz and was....well, disappointed. I can only conclude two things because of this: either she wants to get more books sold or Dr. Oz is trying to appear more legitimate. I am more inclined to believe the former - I like Katie's writing and in what I believe is the burgeoning era of "nurse as entrepreneur," this seems to fit the bill. Do I like what this is pointing to? I don't really know yet. The effect on what people understand about nursing has yet to be seen - I can only hope it will be for the positive. The more the public knows what nurses truly do and how staffing ratios and serious safety concerns (r/t pts and for nurses as well) affect delivery of standard care the more they will be likely to vote in a way that makes for progressive legislation (maybe). But should we do that through "nurse as celebrity?" Still, don't know how that will play out.
But, for now, they're just selling books/getting ratings. I'm hoping for the best.
