No Longer a Fan

I found myself so fond of Katie Duke in her NYER days. But her shameless self promotion to win Dr. Oz's nurse contest has really just turned me off. She and Kati Kleber have suddenly become the face of nursing, and yet, I feel a disconnect, as if they don't truly represent what nursing is like at all.

In light of The View controversy, I just wish nursing DID have an honest, accurate face.

Just my two cents!

I vaguely remember this now. The blonde with the glasses?

NY ER was a TV show.. One was made "famous" for being fired during the taping of the show. It was a decent show, but Dr. Oz is completely overrated.

She also appeared on ABC News to represent nurses in light of what was said on The View.

Yes, ma'am. Went on to work at another hospital. And become an AGCNP.

Oh, I think I did like her. She was kind of a down home nurse goes to the big city and rolls with the punches, right?

What'd she do wrong?

Right.

It isn't necessarily that she did anything majorly wrong. I think it's more that she's becoming less relatable for bedside nurses. Her entire platform was built on her being an RN, like the rest of us. In the trenches at the bedside. And then she became relatively famous, being sponsored by Cherokee, appearing on her own web series, and doing paid appearances at Capella University, toting their nursing programs.

Then she went on to become an NP. And more of her posts and platforms became focused on continuing education. Which I have no issue with. Until she started providing misinformation regarding NY hospitals no longer hiring ASNs, which is false. She indirectly takes the stance that BSN degrees are going to be the thing that forces people to take nursing more seriously. And I disagree. Furthering your education is definitely a positive thing, but the way she goes about it just rubs me the wrong way.

She then became the forerunner supporting the #NursesUnited movement, but didn't use it to bring light to important issues. Now she's seeking nominations and votes to win a sort of "best nurse" contest if you will. Run by no other than Dr. Oz; the very creator of the show that made her famous.

Ew. I don't like her & I don't even know her.

Right.

I agree with you 100% on the NY front. I am an ASN with experience and I had to turn down jobs before I decided to supplement my SN job with the HH job I eventually picked.

Precisely. I'm an ASN and I'm employed in one of the state's largest Level 1 trauma hospitals, which is also a teaching hospital. When I presented this information to her, her rebuttal was to ask when I was hired, and state that this is effective as of 2015. Which is also false. My hospital is actively hiring ASNs. I know this because the majority of them are hired to my floor, and I'm responsible for precepting them.

It's true in some areas that NY hospitals are on an ASN freeze, but not for the majority. NYC area hospitals prefer BSNs, but I can't say if they absolutely refuse ASNs. The magnet hospitals are also on a hiring freeze for ASNs, but it doesn't mean NO hospital in NY is hiring ASNs. She's false.

And I was more annoyed by the idea that she believes a BSN should be minimum entry to practice. She was an ASN. It sparked a whole debate on her Facebook page of ASN vs BSN. One we are all tired of. And she did not paint herself positively.

Never heard of her. I don't get out much

She's more prevalent on social media now that she's no longer a part of NY ER. Especially now that it's no longer on the air. As far as Kati Kleber, she only is and has ever been, present on social media.

That one has always seemed quite impressed with herself.

I find her book silly. Granted, I've only read excerpts, but her "nurse tips and tricks" are nothing special. I commend her for having the gumption to write a book about her first year of nursing, but her experience doesn't mirror that of all nurses. Many nurses don't even work in acute care. Much less an ICU in such a small period of time as an RN.
