Hi my name is Lori and I have been lurking here for a while and I really love this site. I am 35 years old and the mother of 3 girls. I have wanted to be a nurse for a long time but I was just to scared to do it. Well this year I turned 35 and decided it was time to do something for me. (I have been a housewife and mother for the last 12 years) So I enrolled in college. so i can start pre reqs for the rn program. today I took the accuplacer and despite a whole month of constant studying I failed the math test. not a big suprise really. I have always been horrible at math. I did pass everything else. so I guess its not that bad I have been out of school for 20 years. so anyway I guess I will have to take a remedial math course, however I will not let that stand in my way . I will get through the math somehow. I am determined to make my dream a reality

:welcome: Welcome to our forums!
I, too, failed the mathematical portion of the accuplacer back in 2006. I sometimes feel as if algebra is one of those 'gateway' courses where those who can pass it are able to progress through the gate to success, where those who are weak at it get left behind. I've always been very weak at math, but it is something that can be conquered.
Thanks for the encouragment I really needed that. however I already know that I can conquer algebra. in this life I have found that you can do anything if you want it bad enough. The funny thing is that my husband is an engineer and can do algebra in his head along with calculus and trigg. but he gets too frustrated trying to teach me.lol

Many schools let you take the Accuplacer twice. If you know what you got wrong and feel with some brushing up you can pass it then it's worth taking again. Ask the school if they have a study guide for the portion you failed. If you feel you need the class it's not a biggie. So many returning to school have to take remedial classes to brush up. Good luck!! :)

I am pretty horrible at math myself.
I remember when I was taking Chem I awhile back, which involves lots of math. My fiance is an engineer and tried to help me, but I am the one who got too frustrated!
Good luck with your prerequisites, and applying to nursing school!

just make it through the math required, once you get your license it's pretty much a non-issue. some math is required to figure out doses and to do conversions from pounds to kilo's but that's about it. it's definately do-able. :wink2:

Im in remedial math as well.I got a 100 on reading and sentence fragments but a 32 on the math.Math has always been my kryptanite:banghead:.When I read your reply on how math is a non issue after school.I felt a little better and I also I was worried about doing measurements and conversions as well. Is really hard to do?

If you want to study the math at home as opposed to a course, homeschoolers have lots of resources.
Used bookstores that sell to homeschoolers usually have Saxon math books, very straight forward algebra books.
Or there are online courses: one is http://www.homespun4homeschoolers.com/
My kids did not use this course but I've heard good things about it.
Our community college also has math tutors available.
Good for you and pursuing your dreams! Go for it!
