Be kind but firm. If you are too kind, they will take advantage of you, but show compassion because we may not know what's really going on at home. The one thing I do is counsel some of the kids because we don't have a counselor on campus only a few times a month, and I listen to them to their problems. I do not judge and I give advice when asked. You can be their friend, but make sure to be aggressive when you have to.

I start my new job 02/13 as a school nurse at a local middle school (grades 6-8)
I am so nervous and not really sure what to expect! My passion is children. I am the mother of a 10 year old, and a licensed foster parent for the state. THIS is my absolute dream nursing job and I am also lucky enough to be staying on PRN with my current job at the hospital.
I am so surprised to have gotten hired with only 1 year nursing medical surgical experience.
