New Middle School Nurse!

Published

I start my new job 02/13 as a school nurse at a local middle school (grades 6-8)

I am so nervous and not really sure what to expect! My passion is children. I am the mother of a 10 year old, and a licensed foster parent for the state. THIS is my absolute dream nursing job and I am also lucky enough to be staying on PRN with my current job at the hospital.

I am so surprised to have gotten hired with only 1 year nursing medical surgical experience.

:nurse: Any tips or advice? Anything is greatly appreciated! I am SO excited!

:) I will try!

My first school was grades 6-8. I love that age! Still sweet, mostly, and will usually listen to guidance from anyone who is not a parent.;)Most days it was organized chaos, at best, but I felt very useful.

That said, find out what the current practice is for kids to be out of class. Do they need a hall pass? Is there a pass in a daily communication folder or the like? If not, create a policy for your office that you must have written communication from the teacher in student's hand to enter your office. And NO DROP INS BETWEEN CLASSES. Be firm, but kind and you will be successful.

Best of luck!
