New Mexico Licensure Question

Published

Hi everyone. Does anyone know how one should go about applying for the State board in New Mexico? After the school sends the official transcript and after completing the fingerprinting requirements, how long will it take before one could be given an ATT? Thanks and have a nice day!

thanks fil-rn!

hi! nm is also known as “the land of enchantment”. it is also sometimes called the “spanish state” because of its border with mexico. it is rich in history and has lots of picturesque places. the cost of single houses in albuquerque start from $200k.

for the hospital listing in nm, you can check out this link:

with regards to the question about getting a social security no., they have been very strict about this. they do not easily issue a number. you have to show your legal citizenship or status by presenting your green card or work authorization or whatever legal acceptable document that you have that would show why you are entitled to an ssn; your proof of age and proof of identity, and then they will verify your documents---and if they determine that you are entitled to a number, they will mail one to you. if you have questions about this, it is of course best to ask the office concerned directly.

hope this helps. good luck!

Hello

I've been in this forum since March .........I guess:smackingf anyway... After multiples attempts to get my nursing credential validated by the CGFNS and the IERF, and after watching this trend, I decided to ask you (kiko88) some questions......Well first I shoul've said that Iam from Mexico, with not initial license from the Mexican BSN program, with a valid SSN (I am also international student in my senior year of an AAS in Biotechnology at a Junior College.). I just took the TOEFL iBT......with a total score of 81........but scaled scores in reading 19, listening 23,speaking 19, writing 20 :stone.

Firt I have fingerprints card issued on June 2004. They were issued to California BON, ( I applied then in CA with not success....translation of document did not show Psyquiatric nursing, so I was rejected)..........so........... It is ok to send this set of finger prints to NM or should I get new ones; if so, NM BON will send me a request?. I 'm not quite positive , but i think that in order to get the police take my Fingprints I have to show them to whom the fingprint are being issued.

Second my Nursing school just went network wireless on most of the services for students, including transcrips, therefore downloaded transcripts from internet have a quote " not official" however the Nursing school kindly makes the Official by putting a official seal on them plus enclosing a letter that mainly says" this students achieved all credits and she is elegible to sit for the Mexican Nursing test.......then also the nursing school encloses a word-by-word translation which is done at the Nursing school by non certified translator. .....Should this translation be included or is it better to pay for the tranlation part to the NM BON( I willl prefer have the NM BON translating my documents ...........too many bad experiences with mexican translator) Any advice with this point........

Next. Can I use DHL or UPS to send the documents or should I use my country postal service ( which offers a very bad service). this may sound silly but this is importan because despite the good service that DHL or UPS offer, the do not deliver to postal box. Any non postal box to send documents.

Last, but not least important........I know that by reading the information on the NM BON web site I will get good information, but it is much better for my interest to have information first hand from people in this forum .

I am afraid of getting rejected again for silly or stupid mistakes, so I beg you a personalized advice.

I currently live in Overlan Park Kansas and I've been here for almost five year trying to learn English in an immersion ambiance plus I am having a second degree in order to update my math, physics, biology, physiology, anatomy skills........and when getting my Optional Practical training for Biotech I 'd like to be ready also for nursing and then why not .......get a master degree and become a research nurse..........:nurse: :typing

PD my husband insists that I should mention to the NM BON that I am a senior at a junior college and send my transcripts.........I disagree with this since nursing is nursing and biotehc is biotech...........so can you give me your opinion on this........only to let my husband know the truth. I personaly believe my biotehc transcripts are not going to help me at all in my nursing credentialing.

Thanks in advance.

You cannot apply for licensure in any of the compact states if you are not a registered nurse in the philippines. If you are not a US citizen or a permanent lawful resident (green card holder) you are not entitled to apply for an interim permit. I think it would be best to obtain your license there first.

hello, I just sent my application in New Mexico. Althought I passed my Local board exam here in the Philippines, I still don't have my license because of the nursing issue here right now. There is no requirement in New mexico, that we have to be a registered nurse here in the Philippines.

So I think you can apply in New Mexico even without a license thats why New Mexico is so popular right now. Personally though, its better if you have your local license. :p BUt again you don't have to be a registered nurse in order to apply in New mexico licensure examination. Hope this helps.

I think the delay in your ATT's is simply because a lot of people are applying in NM. New Mexico is one of the compact states which means you can apply to other members of the compact state as well and the requirements are just the same. I got my licensure exam in california and even if I'm a citizen my application was processed for 6 mos! I wish I had applied to NM or to other compct states so that I wouldn't have to wait that long to get my license. It took me around 8 mos to get my license! My wife applied in ohio and within 1 1/2 month she got here ATT! To the one asking about the SSN, when you pass the nclex you'll be able to apply for a SS#, don't worry about it, just pass the nclex.

I believe you have to be physically in the US and have a job offer and show proof that you can work in the US legally to get a US SSN for employment.

This is of course no problem for greencard holders already but for most it is an issue.

One more thing, I understand that NM is a compact state, does this mean that I can practice in the other 20 states like Texas and Delaware under the Nurse licensure compact?

You must hold a legal residence in New Mexico for the compact part of it to be valid, wheich means paying rent and taxes to more than one state.

Why would you want to do that?

Yes, your license is valid in those states and you could practice there without applying for reciprocity.

There is no such thing as reciprocity. There is only license by endorsement. Reciprocity ceased to exist when the NCLEX-RN exam came into being. The exam has reciprocity, but the license does not.

And if there is not a legal residence in the original state, then the compact part of it fails to exist. It is considered null and void, and states such directly on the license.

New Mexico I think is similar to texas, If you'll ask me I don't like NM but the thing is,its easier to get a license there. Anyway, when you pass the nm nclex you'll be able to practice to any of the compact states without applying for endorsement or reciprocity. The time it takes for the license to be issued varies from state to state, I would suggest that you check the respective BON (Board of Nusing) that you applied in. Once you get the letter from the board of nursing that you passed, you could now request for a visa screen or if you pass the cgfns w/ the TOEFL or IELTS (I think this is required?) you could apply for a visa screen evenwithout the nclex. I'm not sure how long the visa screen takes coz I did't need to apply for it but what I heard is that it takes 1-3 mos... i'm not sure

For the tenth time today, there is no such thing as reciprocity between any states.

And if the nurse is not a legal resident of New Mexico, the compact part of the license does not exist, it is void when they do no thave a residence there and pay taxes to New Mexico as well.

Sorry, but the issue is that they will provide a hard license, most other states will not without a SSN#.

You cannot apply for the SSN# when you pass the NCLEX exam, it is only granted when the nurse is actually in the US and has documents that they can legally work. It is the final step of the immigration process, all other parts must be completed.

Passing the NCLEX exam does not give you permission to work in the US, and you must have that to get a SSN#.

CA is well known for taking the longest time as they do their own credentials evaluation. Even if you hold a US passport, if you attended school out of the US, it will also take the same time. That is why it is always better to just endorse to CA, only takes a day to do that.

Sorry, but wrong.

Arizona and New Mexico are compact states and they issue a hard license to the RN from another country, and they do not require a local license.

Interim permits can be gotten easily.......the states that permit them will allow a foreing nurse to obtain one as well, the issue is that some states, such as NY, require that the nurse has passed the CGFNS exam to get a limited permit there.

hi tetitto! i'll try my best to answer your questions.

1. you cannot use the ca bon's fingerprint cards for nm bon. fingerprint cards have specific marks of the source agency or purpose. you need to request for a new set of fingerprint cards from the nm bon. you will receive (thru us mail) a set of 2 cards with some forms to fill out (you can choose to request for the complete application packet with the fingerprint cards). bring the cards to your local police which is authorized in your area to do fingerprinting. contact info of the nm bon is in: http://www.bon.state.nm.us/contact.html (a specific contact person and her phone number are also mentioned in the application form in case of requests for fingerprint cards. please read the form).

2. you will also find in that contact info link the complete mailing address of the bon for your mails through courier. you can use dhl or ups and not necessarily your country's postal service.

3. when your academic records or official transcripts are ready for pick up from your nursing school, the said records/transcripts can be picked up by dhl or ups from your nursing school for a delivery directly to the nm bon. your official transcripts must not come from you. it must come directly from your school and delivered straight to the nm bon.

4. i understand from reading the application form for nm licensure that only transcripts from the applicant's nursing program must be sent to the nm bon for evaluation and not those from the non-nursing program. the form also asks for information only on the applicant's high school education and basic nursing program (and not any other program). please verify this by reading also the application form and the instructions in: http://www.bon.state.nm.us/forms.html or you may prefer to call the nm bon.

5. for foreign transcripts which are not in english, nm bon's requirement is that a copy of the translated transcript certified by a qualified translator must be sent directly to the nm bon: http://www.bon.state.nm.us/forms/nonusgrads.pdf i am not aware if the nm bon offers a translation service. you need to ask for information on this directly from nm bon.

i hope i was able to help.

goodluck!

1. After passing NCLEX, how long will I recieve my license?

2. Can I process my Visa Screen Certificate as early as now? I mean can I have my registrar do their part NOW and then I'll wait for the result of my NCLEX exam then I'll proceed with the copy for the licensing body? How long is the processing of the Visa Screen normally?

Thank you.

hi there!

1) 2 months ago, somebody from the Phils. passed nclex and she received her NM license card after 2 weeks.

2) for Visascreen, processing time is usually 2 to 3 months if documents are complete. you can apply for visascreen even before passing nclex and english exam, but per cgfns new policy effective may 1, 2006 if visascreen certificate is not issued within 12 months (from application) due to incomplete requirements, applicant has to pay additional fee to have the application remain active for the next 12 months. check out the fee schedule in cgfns website.

I hope this helps.
