What does the new Health Care bill mean for Nurses?
Job wise? Finical Wise? Etc?
Well, I for one, am very pleased to see this bill passed! It's still a journey, but at least we're going in the right direction.
I have lived in a state where there are no pre existing conditions, no cancellation of policies, and mandated health care, I realize that this is improvement, but you understand that this will cost big money. Using MA as an example, expect decrease hospital census, longer waiting times at MD offices, more paperwork, more taxes, and no raise.
How will this Healthcare Reform Bill affect us? or will it? and when?
it will affect us by increasing work (more insured) and decreasing pay raises (more controls on health care spending, that's what this is really about). some of the bill starts now (2010), like dependent kids allowed to stay on their parents' insurance up to age 26, no policy $ caps, people w/ disqualifying pre-existing conditions can now get insurance, etc.
it's not perfect, but it's better than nothing.
I know some of the negative stuff that is already in the works.
Four of the physicians I know have closed their offices to new medicaid patients. They will keep the ones they have already.
Two of the GPs I am good friends with have decided on cash only. They are that popular and will even make home visits.
Where are we going to get the GPs to see these people?
I'm not sure this whole health bill is bad, but I see a lot of "cart going before the horse mentality."
I fear wages will not be what they are now. As long as I can live comfortably and don't stretch myself, I guess I will manage. What do you guys think this will do for mid-level practitioners?
Increase, which is good. But at the same time...what about the level of care? Remember that NON-medical people can go to school (a Master's degree in French Lit as an example) and become a mid-level practitioner.
Do you want one of those as your primary?

I agree with my wages. Don't even think about cutting them.
I will go work somewhere else AS something else--retail, perhaps where I can look and smell nice ALL the TIME.
