Well, I have made a decision---I am joining the Air Force Nursing Corp. I speak to a recruiter today. I am done complaining and have progressed from anger to acceptance. I have applied to everything under the sun to no avail. Last week I bumped into a girl who graduated with her BSN a year before me. She has gone 16 months and still no job or any prospects of one. I do not want to end up like that. I guess it comes down to what you are willing to sacrifice. I wish things were different,,,,,but they are not. I just have to roll with the punches and do what I have to do to see this thing through. Below are my options:
I will update as things progress.

Air Force: 3 year hitch. Would gain unmatchable RN experience, get paid and secure my future by having an impeccable resume.
I think that is a great decision! Keep us posted on your progress. It does take time to sort through the military process, but I think it'll be worth it in the end. :)

I seriously considered doing the Navy Nurse Corps. I think the training you get is unmatched in the civilian world. Also, I think 3 of the top 5 CRNA schools are military schools, so if that interests you in the future, it might be worth looking in to!
Good luck!

Hey guys, im in the same shoes. Ive been frustrated, angry, depressed about this job market for us new grads. I thought about joining the military. Does anyone know someone in this field? I heard they also have a waiting list to join as an RN? Is this true for Air Force and Navy branches?

I spoke with the director of the program and she said I have a good chance of getting in. She also said that a job can materialize, but that it is not necessarily the case.Air Force: 3 year hitch. Unmatchable RN experience and opportunities for professional advancement paid for by your service. If you decide to make it a career, a retirement check and other benefits after 20 years that can't be matched by any civilian employer. And you will still be young enough to continue to work to your little nurse heart's content. And you will be a lot more desirable to employers when that time comes!

fyi....the air force application process is long so if you want to do it, start it now.
- i started my application process last june
- got accepted in december
- graduated may
- passed nclex june
- going to COT 23 august
i know you have your license so that will help a bit with timing, but it will take a long time...probably at least 6 months.

Is the Air Force Nursing Corp strictly stateside or is there a chance you will be shipped to the Middle East or wherever our next war is?
Also, the commitment is only 3 years? I'd expect it to be longer than that. Maybe they have you on reserve for a few more years after that?
I mean, I'm all for taking care of our troops, but I have no desire to be involve in the war conflict (not my cup of tea).
Oh, and CONGRATS on your decision.
There is a very high likelihood of deployment with any branch of the military.

I highly suggest you find another path then, yes they get DEPLOYED to war zones and other places. You might want to join the Peace Corps then, or the local VA Medical Center. The military takes care of friendlies and enemies, it makes no difference when and where you are. Take it from me.
To the OP , best of luck to you. I think it will be a great experience I know many in the Military Medical field, RN and Medic.
