New Grad in Sacramento, CA

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hello everyone,

I'm new to Sacramento, CA and also a new grad/RN, BSN. Having a difficult time obtaining employment because I don't have a year of acute exp. My dilema is that I have been persistant with the hospitals in the area and don't seem to be making any head way. However, sometimes I know that if you know someone it may be easier to get noticed/looked at. If anyone in this area has any suggestions, please share them. I really want to begin my nursing career.

Thanks,

Specializes in ICU.

Im graduating on the 30th and sit for boards in july. I have an ICU position in the central coast that starts in aug. They are not a trauma hospital but they like new grads and are willing to train in almost any specialty area you are interested. April taft is the recruiter, Marian medical center is the hospital. I hope this helps.

Can I ask what Marian Medical Center pays new grads? I'm interested in the area, but not sure I can move unless the pay is worth it. Thanks so much!

You must have 15 posts under your belt to PM someone. So I think you have 4 to go.

Oh, I didn't realize that you had to post a certain number of posts to private message someone. Thank you.

when do you graduate? lodi memorial is building onto their hospital, so they will be hiring more RNs once that is completed.

I would try them.

Also, I spoke with someone in your area at Mercy San Juan (carmichael), and she mentioned that volunteering is a great way to get your foot in the door. I know, I know, when will you have time right?? But she mentioned that the new grad positions go to the interns and volunteers before outside applicants.

Just a thought.

If you have anymore summers before you graduate, you could also think about becoming a unit secretary or something else that isn't exactly related to nursing, but it gets you in the hospital and gets you some money.

As far as not knowing anyone, try speaking with your instructors. Many still have jobs as RNs at local hospitals I bet, and if you can make a good impression with them, that may be your in.

If you really don't know anyone, maybe try setting an appointment with the CNO or equivalent at hospitals in your area to find out what you could do to improve your chance of getting student nurse (or RN job is you are about to graduate).

Make sure to be prompt and concise (5 minutes or so) and bring your resume.

I did this at a hospital that I wanted to work, and she basically said, "So you want to be a student nurse? When can you start?"

It works wonders when you make an effort beyond those who are just waiting for a new grad or student nurse position to pop up on the website.

Anyway, :twocents:

good luck.

I am a new grad in L.A. I just moved here and I am discovering most of the hospitals only hire new grads into their new grad programs every few months. Is this how it is everywhere? We don't do that in Kansas!!
