New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

I really can't answer with certainty your questions regarding job placements, every employer's needs are different..all I can say for sure is it will be a great advantage if you'll have an OZ registration, Hospitals in OZ have PSA's (patient support assistant), kung hindi kayo maselan, you can apply as a PSA first, then work maybe for 1 year then apply as RN. For instance, the place where I had my placement had a Filipina RN, she's an RN here in the Phils. when she went to OZ, she was sponsored by her relatives, when she tried to look for an RN job, her RN license here was not recognized but she was offered a PSA job which she took then after 2 yrs. of working she learnt of the CAS program which she took and pass and subsequently she was upgraded by the hosp. to an RN position. But I really don't know if they can sponsor you if you'll only going to work as a PSA :( .

.

^^

this is really my situation right now here in victoria...working as PSA/PCA while waiting for the Australian license...

and yes, you cannot just command or ask others what to do if youre a RN, (mind your own business, even the doctors can't command the nurses what to do, i mean if its beyond the work and if the doctor is able to do a certain procedure/care to the patient)..and even the janitors have the right to"preach" you if they saw something incorrect that you have done(based on my very own experience :D)...

anyway, in my own opinion, if luckily we passed Test A of the challenge test it might be great/helpful if we will choose to do the Clinical Placement than doing/taking the Test B of the challenge test, in that way, we would be able to acquire experiences, knowledge and skills about Australian Nurses, how they do nursing in australia, the australian hospital setting, because as what i have seen, they really do nursing differently in australia...nurses in australia are like doctors, the only thing that prohibit nurses from calling them doctors is the authority of prescribing drugs and order diagnostic tests (we all know that doctors can only do these)...with the exemption of Nurse Practitoners whose functions are somehow like a doctor.

good luck to all of us...we can do it.

They are really basic stuff like BSL's, ECG's, Bladder scan, NGT insertion/feeding and nursing cares'. I was assigned in a combined surgical-medical + high dependency unit so I was able to handle post-surgery patients. Aside from medication admin (from med preparation to setting up the IV infusion) I was also made to change wound dressing. What made the placement challenging for instance in doing wound dressing is choosing the right materials you're going to use for a particular wound type. They have a lot of dressing material and is not limited to just sterile gauze and tape :D. And remember your preceptor can ask you anytime the rationale on your decisions:banghead: and your answer must be evidence based :banghead: . Your preceptor wouldn't be mad at you or would shame you in public if you weren't able to answer them but nakakahiya sa sarili natin because then we'll realize bakit nga ba eto napili ko na gamitin or anong rationale nga ba bakit ko ginagawa to :( mas nakakahiya if the patient will be the one asking and you don't know what to answer :crying2: So dapat talaga you have an idea kahit kaunti sa mga gagawin mo. (Note: there is a good website not only for wound management but all sort of best practice care: Joanna Briggs Institute www.joannabriggs.edu.au)

I also did clips removal, CVAD dressing, assisted in a lumbar tap, mag manipulate ng chest drainage, hang blood, take out fem block cath, drains etc..

What is also important is to know your professional boundaries as an RN and as a student. If you're not sure or not familiar about a task you were asked to do then be honest and tell the RN of your situation.

Thanks Branyan for the info. keep em' coming !!!:yeah:

hi! can anyone help me. I'm completing requirements for QLD, in their form, item#5 requires recent practice, the problem is I have no work experience yet. What will I put on it or will I still need a work experience in order to apply for registration. Also, what can I provide for their req. for evidence of competency for practice since I have no work experience?I'm a little bit confuse. Please help me out. thanks.

If you've recently got your license then just put in there: newly graduate nurse

Hi. thanks for all your replies. branyan... you said that you did not have any work experience but you were able to pass the clinical placement. I feel that I really have forgotten everything I have learned. Prior to doing the actual skills like BLS, change wound dressing... will you have class discussions or everything is up to you? will you be given some notes or something like that? So, for example you really don't know what to do or the rationale to your action, will they help you or teach you? or your doomed to fail? Huhuhuhu! I'm so depressed. I know nothing.

Before going for my placement, I reviewed the basic nursing concepts plus I just had my NCLEX last year so some of the more advanced/special nursing topics is quite fresh to me. Anyway, you'll only be assessed on a beginning practitioner level only so what's important are the basic nursing concepts but it wouldn't hurt if you also know some advanced stuff.

If you really don' know what to do then you should tell your RN, that is one principle of knowing your professional boundary or principle of safe nursing practice. Before your placement, you'll be given a pre-clinical workbook that sort of familiarizes you with the OZ health system. It is advisable that you go through them before your actual placement, because it contains some of the terminologies, equipments that are currently being used in OZ healthcare system.

It will really depend on your preceptor, in my case, if I'm not sure how to go about a procedure, I tell my precept. (principle of non-maleficence remember?) I'll ask him to do it first while I observe then next time I'll be the one to do it. So it's not really like 'you don't know how to this then you fail', The placement program has safety nets to help students from failing, this I think is the main difference from the part b one day clinical test. During your placement, you can assess if you're having trouble meeting your goals, every week you need to talk to your course lecturer to discuss how things are going, you can talk to your precept everyday and devise a way how to meet your goals, you can ask feedbacks from your precept, if you're having problem with the ward, you can talk to your precept and to the clinical coordinator of the hospital. What I'm saying is, there's a lot of opportunity to correct, to prove your competence, you have 4 weeks. The preceptors and assessors are your mentors, don't think of them as individuals that would fail you. It is easier to pass the placement than to fail, you just have to show your inititiative and be a conscientious student, don't be too complacent, you must always be up on your toes, like a lion or a hunter always ready to pounce on their prey,on your part naman always on the lookout for opportunities to demo your competence :D

BRANYAN: thanks about medicals, i think it further clarifies my understanding.

ANGELSKI: i think besides filling up the item 5 of the form, you need to execute an affidavit that "you do not have experience yet but you are a competent nurse....etc."... i think some of the members have done this, me not yet kasi did not file yet.. so just double check your docus before submitting them.,.

happy new year...:yeah:

it's a statutory declaration. :D

well i hope everything goes well for me. I just need to take IELTS first because without it I cannot pass my application to QNC. LOL!

Thanks lecna31. For all those whose going to have their docs certified, you should follow the above format. And as lecna31 mentioned ---The notary's contact details should also be included. Also make sure that the date when you sign the statutory declaration should be the same as the date the notary signs it.

HI Branyan, im so happy for you. you made me have more confidence. How about your IELTS Exam? when did you submit it? Before the modules or after , or before clinical???. How much did they require in writing? Thanks>:up:

I think any state in Australia requires 7 in writing and speaking. 6.5 in listening and reading. Am I correct?

Thanks xysy25, but I would also like to know when will the IELTS be submitted? before or after modules, or before or after clinical placement (PART B?):confused:

Submit it together with your QNC application. One of QNC's requirement is to have a passing IELTS grade before they allow you to do the bridging program. You can submit your application without IELTS but once they receive your paper, they would still require you to pass the requirements you lack before they can process your paper.

Thank you xysy25. Now it's clear that I still have to retake again my Ielts. I only got 6 in writing. I got all 7 on ther bands tho. This is in my 2nd take already. I think of getting the OET but I still don't have complete idea about it sa Pinas. Do you have some info on this? I only know that if you fail in one or some bands, you have the option to retake only bands that that you fail. Unlike IELTS that you have to retake all.

I hope somebody can give some onfo on this. Thanks.:(:(

hi, yes there will be a schedule for english exam to be conducted by OET in the philippines...OET is a bit expensive compared to IELTS...philippines is one of the asian countries wherein a testing center is present...OET is very much specific to the profession you have. ex: you are a nurse, so expect that your english skills will be tested conforming to nursing...

for more info...you can visit their website: www.oet.com.au

and just follow the links...

i hope this can help you...
