Hi everyone, please help me.
I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.
Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.
That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.
However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.
I already have my bachelors degree here.
When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?
After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?
Thank you!
Hi branyan! I forgot to ask about vaccination. Where will I get these things. I want to be vaccinated as early as now. Wehre can I avail of this service and what vaccinations are required by CQU before commencing hospital placement. And lastly, wehre you sponsored by a "government" hospital in Bundaberg? I have a relative in Taigum and the nearest hospitals in the area are Prince Charles and Royal Women's. These are two large hospitals and I admit to say that I have the slimmest chance to get a clinical placement in both institution since I wanted to to the real exam and not the simulated one. Please advise. Thanks again.
Hi Branyan.. what are the skills were you able to perform during your placement? so that we will have a little idea of what to expect. I know it may not be the same if we do our placement but at least we a view of what the situation will be during placements. Thanks!!!
They are really basic stuff like BSL's, ECG's, Bladder scan, NGT insertion/feeding and nursing cares'. I was assigned in a combined surgical-medical + high dependency unit so I was able to handle post-surgery patients. Aside from medication admin (from med preparation to setting up the IV infusion) I was also made to change wound dressing. What made the placement challenging for instance in doing wound dressing is choosing the right materials you're going to use for a particular wound type. They have a lot of dressing material and is not limited to just sterile gauze and tape . And remember your preceptor can ask you anytime the rationale on your decisions:banghead: and your answer must be evidence based
. Your preceptor wouldn't be mad at you or would shame you in public if you weren't able to answer them but nakakahiya sa sarili natin because then we'll realize bakit nga ba eto napili ko na gamitin or anong rationale nga ba bakit ko ginagawa to
mas nakakahiya if the patient will be the one asking and you don't know what to answer
So dapat talaga you have an idea kahit kaunti sa mga gagawin mo. (Note: there is a good website not only for wound management but all sort of best practice care: Joanna Briggs Institute http://www.joannabriggs.edu.au)
I also did clips removal, CVAD dressing, assisted in a lumbar tap, mag manipulate ng chest drainage, hang blood, take out fem block cath, drains etc..
What is also important is to know your professional boundaries as an RN and as a student. If you're not sure or not familiar about a task you were asked to do then be honest and tell the RN of your situation.
Well I would understand why you applied for a tourist visa because you went on your own. There a so called short stay visa or 456 wherein you can take the bridging course and after find an employer who will petition you, can convert your visa to 457 while in australia without going back to the Philippines. Anyway, you do have return tickets for both visas so it would be great to at least take a vacation while waiting for the authority to work. Here's the link for the visa update:http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/business/456/#a
I already have my results coming from Sarah and I failed 2 modules: Professional and the Legal/Ethical. I passed the cultural and Clinical so I only have to do part B for a day. This is quite expensive. Did you have any difficulty with the modules? I am planning to enroll both at the same time. I work as a telehealth nurse in the Philippines and sometimes, I have idle time to spare. Thanks for the information.
My advise would be try 1 module first, just to have a feel...you really need to do serious research to make sensible arguments on your topic and it takes a lot of time, they expect that the essay you will pass is academic, evidence based and scholarly written. Yeah, its really expensive because you need 900 aud for each module. I think failing the clinical module is a blessing in disguise for me. At first I was really furious because I only need 1.5 points to pass it but in retrospect, I think I was better off doing the 1 month clinical placement than doing the one-day clinical challenge. Kasi I have a month correct my mistakes and prove my competence rather than a day, parang slowly but surely ika nga...
With regards to the VISA, I wanted to have a 456 visa but ms. jenny anastasi specifically told me to apply for a tourist visa only, if you're a CAS student and applied for a tourist visa and have the proper docs then expect that you'll encounter no problems with Immig because they coordinate directly with your case officer. On the newsletter that they've sent to CAS students, it was indicated there that only a tourist visa will be given to students who will be taking their placement so I'm not really sure if you could get a 456.

What CQU need is Hep B vaccination, since I already had my Hep B series, I only needed to have a Hep B titre and a Hep B screening. You can get them in an institution or your family doctor. But with the medical for the visa, the accredited clinic required Hep C, Hep B, HIV tests/screening.
Taigum is a suburb of Brisbane, it's far from Bundaberg, Bundaberg is 4 hours drive north of Brisbane. I did my placement in a private hospital in Bundaberg. I think CQU only have certain hospitals where you can have the clinicals because I reckon that a teaching hospital is required for the placement. What you can do is tell CAS that you have a relative in Aus where you can stay, then they can tell you if you go can on that hospital for placement but also make sure that your relative's place is near the hospital, but when they tell you its a 30 min drive be wary kasi ang layo na nun unless you have a car to use okay lang.
I would also want to take the clinical to at least prepare myself for the hospital experience. I also have the option to take that pero at a later time na siguro. I only needed 1 point in the professional part. I just hate myself for not passing that part.. wish icould have pass the professional and failed the clinical part. Anyway, I am through with hep B and hep C screening. Thank you so much.

thank you for your replies..
just would like to seek clarifications with regards to "medicals"...
So you had your vaccinations, then how you will show or prove it to the CQU, i mean, you kept your medical record or certification on vaccination then presented it personally to CQU?
Soon you will be working and you will be required by your hospital for certain vaccinations.. how do you go about it, meaning, you will obtain all the necessary vaccinations here in the philippines? then compile your medical/vaccination document and submit/present it to your hospital?
would you know what document is required to show proof of your vaccination? serological test results? or a mere certification of your family doctor or an australian accredited doctor?
merry xmas.. thanks again.. hope you would be patient with us...

I already completed my vaccinations for Hep B years ago here in the Phils., CQU asked for my medical records specifically for Hep B but I told them I misplaced my immunization card so they told me to get serological tests instead; They asked for Hep B titre and Hep B screen. After getting the results, I sent them to CQU thru email because the results from the laboratory where I had my test can be downloaded, then after giving them an electronic copy I also printed a hard copy and sent it thru snail mail. I think they also sent the results to the hospital placement facility because they asked for my consent. These immunization/s are part of the pre-requisites you need to comply with before you can have your placement. Another important pre-req is a current BLS license, I got mine from the Phil. National Red Cross Q.C. Chapter, I attended their BLS course to update my BLS license, its a 4 day affair so you should also make time for that activity.
With the hospital requirements with regards to work, I don't have any idea because I haven't done it yet.

Well done:yeah: The one-day clinical challenge test, depende naman sa individual, especially if you have lots of clinical experience, ako kasi walang experience kaya di ganun ka confident. My aim in taking the challenge test is to try to lessen the educ modules to take
kasi napaka gastos. I also wanted to pass the challenge test and do the part B but yung konsyensya ko was telling me na wag na kasi you'll be putting yourself in a tremendous pressure that's why when I received my exam result mixed feelings kasi sayang I can't get the registration fast but I was also relieved that I don't have to take the part B. Like I said before, it was really a blessing in disguise failing that clinical subject, if I didn't go for the placement, I wouldn't have known the hospital that is currently sponsoring me.
hi! can anyone help me. I'm completing requirements for QLD, in their form, item#5 requires recent practice, the problem is I have no work experience yet. What will I put on it or will I still need a work experience in order to apply for registration. Also, what can I provide for their req. for evidence of competency for practice since I have no work experience?I'm a little bit confuse. Please help me out. thanks.
hi grape thanks for the reply. do you have to do essays or researches for the modules that you failed? thanks!
Hi xysy25,
Yes, upon application for failed modules they will send us our assignments. I had to research and make essays. Luckily, ANSM helped me correct my work before submitting. I passed.
I will have my medical exams done tomorrow.

Hi. thanks for all your replies. branyan... you said that you did not have any work experience but you were able to pass the clinical placement. I feel that I really have forgotten everything I have learned. Prior to doing the actual skills like BLS, change wound dressing... will you have class discussions or everything is up to you? will you be given some notes or something like that? So, for example you really don't know what to do or the rationale to your action, will they help you or teach you? or your doomed to fail? Huhuhuhu! I'm so depressed. I know nothing.
