New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

hello owen2004, are u a Filipino as well? how did you get in NZ? and is it now still open for nurses? because i heard that NZ now is closed. Is that true? Also, what were the requirements? Thank you :)

hi No. 1089 branyan,

Congratulations !! to you ~ and million thanks for you sharing us your actual experience~ it's really helpful ^__^;;

Honestly, after reading your post, I think I will have a problem about notarization because my notary public wrote only "this is a true copy from a document presented to me". Is that not enough?? Actually, I have just got a letter of acknowledgment yesterday. It also said that I was been selected for a criminal history audit.

Any way, really glad that you pass everything and going to work in AUS. I hope everything goes great for you there ^__^,,

Good luck and God bless ~

Thanks patsy! Your acknowledgment letter is just to tell you that they have received your application. The next letter you'll receive is either a letter that will tell you whether you're qualified or need to do the bridging course or you have incomplete docs. You'll know if you have an incomplete docs or something's wrong with your docs if it comes back to you. QNC policy is to return docs they found to be incomplete.

From my experience, sadly, it was not enough. That's why I had to re-notarize and re-send my docs. It is also important to have the complete name, address and contact details of the notary public included. Most notary will only put their license no. or roll. no without their address and contact details.

Hello branyan, i just read ur posts. may i ask what is this CAS program? thanks :)

hello again branyan, nevermind my first question, i read more about the QNC program from your previous posts. anyway, i am also a fresh graduate of nursing and i dont even have my license yet! :) am still awaiting the results of the november 08 board. even so, im already looking for job opportunities here and there so someday when im already in the position to make a decision, i wont be so lost. ^_^ may i ask, did you have to have 2 years of experience here in the phil before you could head on to aus? ^_^ thanks

Hi! CAS (Competence Assessment Service) program is a bridging/transition or a re-entry program for RN's who wants to go back to nursing after 5 years of not working but this usually applies to OZ's but this is also a recognized pathway by the Queensland Nursing Council (QNC) for for foreign trained nurses like us Filipinos who wants to register and subsequently work in Aus. It is conducted by the Central Queensland University. The main difference of this program from other bridging courses is that it is a flex-study program conducted on a distance learning/education scheme. It means that you can do the major part of the course here in the Phils. you don't have to stay in Aus for 3 months thereby saving you a lot of money. It also gives you the opportunity to gain your registration fast by successfully completing their exams which consist of the Challenge test and the one day clinical practical exam IF you think you're competent enough to practise as an RN in Aus and don't want to go through the educational modules.

thank you for taking the time to answer my questions :) however, being a fresh graduate, i do not as yet, deem myself to be "competent enough to practice as an RN in Aus" :) is there a training program there suitable for fresh graduates who happen to have no clinical experience whatsoever? or are all required to have at least 2 years clinical exp in the phil before being qualified to apply there? thank you very much

May I add some info if you don't mind? :)

Currently, QNC is still open to applicants without experience. However, you cannot apply without a license so you will have to wait for your license to come out before you apply.

There is a program called "Graduate Nurse Program" which is a paid sort of training program for newly grad RNs in Australia. Newly Registered (Australian registration) Overseas Trained/Educated Nurses can also apply for the said program but there is no assurance that you will be offered a place as their priority is their own graduates. The program usually run for about 1-2 years. Also, each state has its own GNPs for newly grads.

Apart from the GNP, there is no other training program for fresh grads, both local and overseas trained. However, hospitals do offer orientation programs and also you can get some form of training from the bridging programs of each state. But keep in mind too that such are not official training programs, you are merely oriented to the system and reviewed a bit. So, basically you just have to possess the skills of a beginner Australian RN.

Specializes in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Medical.

Hi Branyan.. what are the skills were you able to perform during your placement? so that we will have a little idea of what to expect. I know it may not be the same if we do our placement but at least we a view of what the situation will be during placements. Thanks!!!

Hi Branyan. I'm so happy that you're here to assist nurses in applying for Queensland. I am waiting for my exam result and I think I' ll be doing the modules this January. What took you so long to complete the module? How did it go? Your visa was quite fast. For the medicals how long did it take you? What visa did you apply for the part B? Thanks for you reply

hi patsy_th!

i would like to share my experience with QNC. the council returned my application together with the attached documents because according to them the notary public failed to state that he/she sighted the original document. i search the net how to certify a document and found some resources which are mostly from australian institutions. i presented it to the notary public and she certified my documents as...I have sighted the original document and certify this to be true copy of the original. Signed this ___ day of _________ 2008 at ___________, Philippines.please don't forget to include the contact details, address and phone number/s. just my :twocents:

Thanks lecna31. For all those whose going to have their docs certified, you should follow the above format. And as lecna31 mentioned ---The notary's contact details should also be included. Also make sure that the date when you sign the statutory declaration should be the same as the date the notary signs it.

Hi kit25, I had to attend to some personal stuff so I had to temporarily stop doing my modules. If anyone feels that she couldn't finish the module on time, it is important to contact your lecturer and inform him/her. Because each module ideally should be finished in 12 weeks. Each module has 2 assignments so you're given 6 weeks to submit 1 assignment. But you can submit an assignment as early or as soon as you finish. I finished 1 module in 1 month, but I worked on it everyday. The assignment can be compared to a research paper because you have to discuss certain topics and to be able to support your arguments you must cite references. You'll really need to read about the subject matter and consult books, journals, news articles, websites to better discuss the topic.

The VISA that will be issued when you go on a clinical placement is a tourist visa only but you'll have to do a medical that is required for a business visa since you'll be working on a medical facility. Processing for a tourist visa only takes 2 weeks provided that you've given them complete and correct docs. What I did was go on a medical first then apply for the visa. I went for my medical Friday (Oct. 17) then went to VIA center on Monday (Oct.20) then I received my VISA (Oct.30)
